I have an itchy rash that I get on my upper back. It drives me nuts, but I'm not sure if it's DH or just some other awful rash that has flared up. It's red with tiny bumps.

Applebees is a useless restaurant! I've tried twice to explain my needs (once in New York City and once in Southern California). Both times a piece of garlic bread was dropped in the middle of my plate and I sent it back. My request for unseasoned vegetables was ignored. Never again. I think I'll write their corporate office, too.

I'm pretty sure the gluten I got was in some ricola throat lozenges and some teas I was drinking when I had a cold. I didn't even look at the ingredients, because it's my first gluten-free cold! Now I know to be more careful. The DH cleared up pretty well after about a week. Thanks for your replies.

ARCHIVED Throat Lozenges?
Pegster posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The cold season has arrived in my classroom of second graders and they're all sneezing all over me! I am studying the ingredients on throat lozenges and boy am I confused! The natural herbal things seem suspicious to me---all these plants! Does anyone know of some gluten-free cough drops? -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods, Sun Harvest
Pegster replied to arismama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My closest Whole Foods is 30 miles away, and I feel like dancing every time I go there. They have a frozen gluten-free section with hamburger buns, cinnamon roles, pizza crusts... Lots of cereals and pastas, frozen meals. I love it! I also love Trader Joes. Ask for their Gluten Free food list! -
I hadn't thought about iodized salt. I have been eating tortilla chips a lot. I guess I have to watch more than gluten. Thanks for responding TIffany.

My hairdresser uses a brand of hair color called "Framesi" and I looked carefully at the ingredients and didn't see anything that looked like wheat protein. It is like reading a foreign language isn't it.?

When I received my diagnosis of DH six months ago, I became gluten-free and everything cleared up right away. Suddenly I have the DH on my elbows and I seem to have hives in strange places. I can't trace anything I might have eaten recently. Does anyone know if DH can just flare up even if I've been gluten-free (with very few mistakes) for 6 months? How...

Do you have a George Foreman Grill? They are great! I can put a few frozen chicken tenders on for ten minutes and I have the basis for an easy meal. The gluten-free cereals I buy are Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles and Kashi Cranberry Sunshine. Also for easy snacks/meals: cheese quesadillas, Omelettes, yogurt, trail mix, Healthy Choice chicken and rice...

It's hard to find a list of gluten-free Shampoos, etc. because so many believe that you have to eat gluten to be affected by it. I think this varies from person to person. I do get DH from contact (external) with things that contain wheat. I feel like you are better off just checking ingredients. Garnier Fructis works really well for me. Cheaper shampoos...

ARCHIVED Breyers Ice Cream
Pegster replied to JUDI42MIL's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree! This person is on just about every thread preaching a ridiculous "eat hardly anything" diet to people who are looking for positive ways to deal with a difficult disease. I've never heard of a Troll before, but it makes perfect sense...and gets on my nerves! -
1. I can still eat chocolate 2. I can still eat at In N Out 3. I can Just Say No to Krispy Kreme (because I know what it does to me) 4. When I travel to Italy, the waiters treat me like I'm special and bring me delicious gluten-free meals including dessert! 5. I know what makes me sick and all I have to do is avoid it. No more surprises!!

ARCHIVED They Can't Really Be Serious About This?
Pegster replied to rgeelan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm not a long time celiac, but I've never had a reaction from using my same old pots and pans (aluminum, stainless, etc.) The only thing I bought was the same cheap $9.99 toaster that everyone else seems to have. Oh, I did buy a pasta pot with a strainer in the lid for my special pasta- but now my whole family has the gluten-free pasta with me. -
ARCHIVED Gf Store?
Pegster replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love Trader Joes if you have one near you. They provide a brochure filled with gluten free foods that they sell. Their prices are great. TJ just came out with new Brown Rice pastas (penne and spaghetti) that are around $1.60. They also have gluten-free frozen waffles, rice crackers, Brown Rice bread, etc. Regular grocery stores tend to have rice pasta... -
celiac3270 is my favorite Celiac. I can't believe how much I (a teacher) am learning from this guy! Best wishes and good luck!

This is a great question- what kind of doctor to see. I was diagnosed by a dermatologist who said having DH means I absolutely have celiac disease. My GP knew nothing about celiac disease or DH- had no idea that my Thyroid problems could even be related. I asked if I needed follow up testing or blood work or anything and my GP just shrugged- said if I...

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Dh?
Pegster replied to Jennifer M.'s topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
DH is typically on elbows and knees, but I get the blisters on my hands when I feed our pet rabbits. Their food has wheat in it and sometimes I forget to wash my hands after I handle it. I have also gotten the blisters from contact with types of grass on my legs and feet. I am on a gluten-free diet so I don't get the other breakouts at all. Good Luck! -
I ate gluten-free pasta all over Italy. I almost spit it out the first time I tried it because I was so sure it was regular pasta. My guess is any pasta manufactured in Italy would probably be great because their understanding of celiac disease is so much better than in the U.S. I buy corn pasta made by Le Veneziane at an Italian market (Claros) here in...

ARCHIVED How Much Would You Pay For A Pill?
Pegster replied to asdfgh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If there were a "Gluten-Blocker" that I could take before Thanksgiving dinner at my sister-in-law's or before a special wedding dinner, I'd shell out $5 - $10 for - it to be able to eat without worry. As for a daily pill, I'd rather stay gluten-free, I think. I'm so used to it it's not a big deal. -
I went to my dermatologist this morning and he was amazed that my DH was completely gone. He asked me if I was gluten-free and seemed amazed that I was. He was the one who told me the best cure for DH was to go gluten-free for life. In my experience, though, I have found out that a lot of creams, shampoos, detergents, etc. have such strong ingredients...

ARCHIVED Dealing With Other People's Reactions?
Pegster replied to sunflower's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Often waiters just assume I'm on Atkins or on some other weight loss diet. Yesterday I specified "no dressing" on my salad and the waitress said "We have some dressings that are low fat". It's easier to just say "no thanks" than to try to explain. Because I'm not sickly looking or even underweight, people don't perceive of me as having a disease. They... -
I went into a restaurant every day last week and asked for a gluten free meal. I didn't explain what gluten free meant or even have to tell them the wheat allergy story. The waiters smiled and nodded and brought me delicious risotto, pasta, bread, salads, fish, or meat. For dessert I got lovely cakes decorated with fruit and custard or cream. I think...

ARCHIVED Okay, I Am Confused...
Pegster replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not an expert, but I have experience with the hair dye sensitivity. I have celiac disease and DH. Most hair dyes leave me with DH blisters in my scalp and on my face. It doesn't bother me on the inside, just on the outside! (And I hope no one is getting dye in their mouth. I don't think that's very tasty!) -
Well here's my report on gluten-free Airline foods: On Lufthansa on an overseas flight I got chicken with a gluten-free pasta and tomato sauce and fruit for dinner, but for breakfast I got a lovely concoction of tator tots and mushrooms EW! Coming back on Delta Airlines my gluten-free meal was a tiny chunk of fish and greenbeans, a Wheat Roll, Wheat Crackers...

Thanks for all the responses! I will definitely take plenty of snacks. I have a total travel time of almost 20 hours including a layover in Germany before I arrive in Rome so my carry-on will be stuffed with gluten-free snacks for me. Great suggestions, everyone!
