  1. I was also very depressed when I got my diagnosis. I wasn't super sick- very minor symptoms. I was diagnosed by a dermatologist, not a GI doctor. But my dermatologist told me the gluten wasn't only causing annoying blisters to my elbows, but destroying my intestine in the process! It is a very difficult lifestyle change, but it is necessary for your health...
  2. Thanks so much for your very thorough response! I've had people offer me sandwiches that they think I can eat because they're on white bread, not wheat! Do they think there is an ingredient called "white" that bread is made from?
  3. I'm flying to Europe next week. I ordered a gluten-free meal for both my flights to and from (Lufthansa and Delta). I'm just wondering what to expect. My husband says I'll get a bowl of rice and an apple. My daughter says I'll get steak and a baked potato! Who has experience with gluten-free food on an airplane? And can I trust that it will really be...
  4. It's funny that this question came up because I usually use Ivory soap and found a bar of Tone hidden away in a cupboard. My guess is that it is NOT gluten-free because I have been itchy since I used it! The ingredients don't specifically say "wheat" or anything Open Original Shared Link but I think "sorbitol" can be derived from either wheat or corn...
  5. There's nothing worse than that car ride home is there?
  6. I am 47, married with two daughters. I was daignosed with DH in April which explained the unpredictable GI symptoms I've had since I was about 12 years old! I don't seem to have any relatives with celiac disease although any time anyone complains about some sort of symptom (headache, rash, hangnail...ANYTHING) I tell them to go gluten-free. I am amazed...
  7. I agree that it's hard to have a sense of humor about something this life-altering, but it really has been important for me (just to keep my sanity). I spent my life enjoying foods that are suddenly forbidden to me even though my GI symptoms are mild. I LOVE cake- to me a wedding or a birthday always meant CAKE I always tell people to eat a piece of...
  8. I had an itchy rash on my scalp before I was diagnosed with celiac disease and DH. From what I have read, the DH is typically on the elbows, knees, back, etc. I KNOW I had it in my scalp, too, and it didn't go away until I switched shampoos/conditioners. Wheat protein is in sooo many hair products. THe one that I used didn't say "wheat" anywhere in the...
  9. Just a thought... Has anyone checked your thyroid levels? I got a diagnoses for hypothyroidism from my regular dr the same day I heard that I had celiac disease from my dermatologist. One of the mian symptoms of the thyroid is tiredness. These autoimmune diseses are linked. Another thought...any full time student with three childten is bound to be tired...
  10. A list of products would be very helpful. Try https://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid...-12104486024.2d the list of mainstream products that are gluten-free on this website. I had my hairdresser check the ingredients on all of her haircolors for me and she found one that didn't have wheat listed. I also have her put a roll of cotton around my hairline...
  11. So, Richard, where is your block and what time do you want us all there?
  12. I really think the Garnier Fructis is gluten-free. My skin is so sensitive, especially on my scalp and face, I get DH when anything with wheat protein touches it. I don't react at all to the Garnier Fructis. By the way, I noticed wheat protein in the ingredients of nail polish!!! I can't believe how long it takes me to shop for everything these days...
  13. Clinique contacted me with a list of names for wheat, barley, oat etc. chemical names. Wheat ingredients all say "wheat" in them (Ex: hydrolized wheat protein) except triticum vulgare. A barley derived ingredient is "hordeum vulgare" and something called "panicum Miliaceum" comes from millet whatever that is. The other ingredients say the actual grain...
  14. Speaking of Clinique...It's bonus time at Nordstrom and two of the free items (body lotion and lipstick) clearly say "Wheat" in the ingredients! So much for being allergy tested and safe. I just emailed them about some of their other products. We'll see. I'm finding that the cheaper brands of toiletries are the ones that DON'T contain wheat products....
  15. Before my diagnosis, I had the itchiest scalp in the world. I was using a shampoo recommended by my hairdresser to keep the color in my hair and it had HVP in it. While on vacation, I used my daughter's Garnier Fructis shampoo which seems gluten-free to me unless I'm missing some secret ingredient. My head felt so much better immediately! Now I realize...
  16. I only had a positive biopsy for DH- and some blood tests, too, which I will repeat in a month or so. My DH disappeared after just a few weeks gluten-free and my stomach problems have gone away too. Who would have thought a dermatologist could figure out why I've had digestive problems since I was a teenager? Now if I can just stop licking envelopes and...
  17. Thanks for all the encouragement and advice from everyone. My pasta tasting episode gave me a DH flare up. Just from a couple noodles! But now I understand why my dermatologist told me I had to go gluten-free. And I can totally relate to the envelope incident because I did the exact same thing a few days ago. My family thinks I'm nuts! (My 17 year old...
  18. I was diagnosed only three weeks ago and have sincerely tried to be totally gluten-free since my diagnosis. Today I am celebrating Memorial weekend with my family at our cabin in the mountains. I carefully baked gluten-free brownies, brought my own corn pasta and thought I did everything right. I was cooking the wheat pasta for everyone else when I popped...
  19. My hands break out when I feed our rabbits alfalfa pellets. I get blisters. Wheat must be part of the mixture.
  20. I was in the process of cancelling a trip to Italy when I started to read these posts. I was diagnosed with celiac disease only 3 weeks ago by a dermatologist who spotted DH and got a positive biopsy. I didn't have a clue! I was told I had a sensitive stomach all my life, but never saw a Dr. unless I thought I had food poisoning (funny, I seemed to get...
