  1. My GI Doc also said that the intestinal biopsy was the best diagnostic tool for celiac disease. When she told me this, I had already been gluten-free for six months after a positive biopsy for DH. I asked her why she felt another biopsy would be necessary since I was already on a gluten-free diet. She basically said it was so I could know I have celiac...

    ARCHIVED Disneyland!

Another note about Disneyland...my daughter brought home the cast member's 50th anniversary keepsake book from DLand today (the real 50th!). The book was filled with notes people wrote to commend castmembers for good work. There was a letter reprinted from a happy parent thanking the Food Operations Chef, Chris Justesen, for his help in making a special...

    ARCHIVED Disneyland!

The Storybook cafe in California Adventure has gluten-free pizza crusts. My daughter has been checking into gluten-free foods for me at DLand (she's one of those characters at the character breakfasts!) They seem very aware of celiacs. Isn't that nice?

    ARCHIVED Risotteria

I am from California, but just returned from a week in NYC. I made my way to Risotteria on the advice of this site. What a treat for me! I almost cried when I walked in and saw a beautiful cake that I could actually have! I had Panini and a great salad. The owner brought out a few things for me to taste, too. My husband and I went back for a second...

    ARCHIVED Miserable

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? I have an underactive thyroid (autoimmune- celiac disease related I'm sure--- and one of the only symptoms I had was a loss of my voice. (And I was in a show at the time!) Good luck to you! I admire your desire to go without drugs, but there really are some amazing things out there. As my husband's dr said, "There...
  6. Check out Clan Thompson's Celiac Site Open Original Shared Link for good info about DH. Your doctors are right. The "allergy" (actually more of an intolerance than an allergy) is to Gluten. BUt people on this board with DH are speaking from experience. Iodine is a TRIGGER for DH and you may find that it can trigger yours. If you are gluten...
  7. Although I have been gluten-free for over a year, I sometimes get DH outbreaks after using anti-inflamatories (ibuprofen, aleve). I also get the breakouts when it is warm, especially where elastic contacts my body. Try sea salt intead of iodized salt. Also look at processed foods you are eating, like potato chips which may be salty. Good Luck
  8. I sometimes get DH blisters on my face. They are like little pimples, but the top layer of skin sort of sloughs off. They don't really hurt, They heal very quickly. The blisters are most often on my forehead and close to my hairline. I don't use anything on them except astringent to dry them up. As for the squeeeze bottles: don't forget jelly. I don...
  9. I always have Immodium AD in my purse for emergencies. Since you have had celiac disease for 5 years, I assume you already are on the gluten-free diet?

    ARCHIVED Cd And Dh

I think the most important thing for people to understand about DH is that everyone's case is different. I have flare ups when I use iodine, but also when I am using anti inflamatory drugs, ike motrin. My worst flare up was when someone made me gluten-free cookies with oatmeal in them. My dietician told me oats were fine, but they seem to trigger DH...
  11. I know there is controversy about oats. I don't eat them, because they seem to affect my DH somehow, but soaking in them works very well for me. I'm sure others will disagree with me, but every one reacts differently.
  12. Ask for a facial loofah. THey have them at the grocery store in the face products department. You could get one at Walmart or kMart.
  13. Anti-inflamatory drugs like Ibuprofen can worsen DH. I finally connected my outbreaks with ALEVE. After taking it for a few days, I always have a flare up, but then it goes away. I am gluten free, and I can almost always trace an outbreak to either a gluten accident or taking an anti-inflamatory.

    1. Yes 2. No 3. Female I hope you get an A
  15. I agree with the last comment about bread! Most of it isn't worth eating. I know people with bread makers have luck making gluten-free bread, though. The best baked goods I have found are frozen tapioca-based products from a Canadian company called Kinnikinick. When thawed, it has a texture similar to "real" bread. A lot of chocolates are gluten-free...
  16. For severe DH flare ups, I soak in Aveeno Oatmeal baths. It really helps me. I use a steroid ointment for flare ups also. I have been Gluten Free for about 8 months. My DH symptoms were always worse than my GI symptoms, but it was worth going gluten-free to get rid of the rash. My rash disappeared completely just a few weeks after I went gluten-free...
  17. K - Scary story! How did you get the extra hair layer out? Ever since I read your post I've been feeling my head for lumps! None so far.... Now about those little bumps... I think it's important to use gluten-free shampoos, etc., but I understand the gluten antibodies take a long time to get out of the skin. DH can pop up anywhere at any time. When...
  18. My Thanksgiving started out with rolling eyes and "You're not doing that diet thing TODAY are you?" Followed by a spoon covered with flour being shoved into a casserole that I would have been able to eat! Also my hostess had promised a turkey breast on the routisserie with no stuffing in addition to the stuffed bird but CHANGED HER MIND! (Didn't think anyone...
  19. I just attended a Thanksgiving Feast at the school where I teach. A corporation paid for the feast for our entire school and staff and all the teachers had to attend- the press was there and everything. The cafeteria lady was so good to me. My tray just had the turkey, corn and cranberries on it. The turkey was the processed roll sort of thing. I just...
  20. I can't believe a nutritionist would say it's okay to cheat! This person needs some serious training. It's bad enough when we have accidental slip ups, but for a professional to tell you it's okay to cheat is really irresponsible. Even if you don't have an obvious physical reaction, your insides may be affected.
  21. I have an HMO so costs weren't an issue. The dermatologist had me come in when I had actual blisters and he took biopsies of each of my elbows. I guess he took the samples from skin right around the lesions. I was using an ointment for the rash already but it didn't always work. When the DH biopsy came back positive he told me I had celiac disease and...
  22. When I saw a GI dr about my diagnosis of DH she wanted to jump right in with the biopsy. I told her I had been gluten-free for six months and the tests wouldn't be accurate. I also told her the NIH considered a positive DH diagnosis to be a positive celiac disease diagnosis as well. I asked her why, since I had already committed to a gluten-free diet for...
  23. Poor thing! You have been through a lot. There's a children's story called "It Could Always Be Worse" but I'm sure that at times it seems like it just can't be any worse. The good news is that you don't have cancer and you have a managable disease. The bad news is that it's no fun and there will be bad days and good days. In some ways you are lucky...
  24. I believed the sores in my scalp and along my hairline were reactions to wheat in my shampoo. I switched to a gluten-free shampoo and hair coloring and they went away. Since then they come and go (as does my DH) so a realize they must be due to a slip up in what I eat. My shampoo is still gluten-free. I understand it takes a long time to get the gluten...
  25. Mine has never looked like the pictures either. I get patches of red itchy skin on my elbows. Sometimes they become blisters with clear fluid. I also get these blisters on my face, especially around my hairline. My scalp gets itchy, too. Every once in a while I have maybe one itchy spot on my knees. One thing I do notice that if I get a spot on one side...
