  1. Make, portion and freeze your entrees ahead of time so that you only have to prepare sides. Plan meals so that you can fix a large batch of a starch to accompany, say three meals in a row. Maybe you could take out portioned packs of stew with carrots and pearl onions, New Orleans style red beans with sausage and Sechuan vegetable stir fry to serve with...
  2. How old are you? If you don't mind my asking. Several of your symptoms remind me of myself a few years back when I began experiencing pre-mature peri-menopause at age 33. Celiac can do some crazy things to our bodies and all of the things you listed could be related. Thankfully, I no longer experience the horrible night sweats. I used to go to bed with...
  3. Marble Slab Creamery will get your ice cream from an unopened container in the back if you ask. It's too risky to get one that is open, any topping or gluten containing flavor could be cc'd in there. Just don't get the cake batter flavor, they fold actual cake batter into the ice cream!
  4. It's easy to be a weatherman in New Orleans in the summer. Every day is the same. Hot, 100% humidity and 75% chance of afternoon showers. In September it's exactly the same, but add in....and a 50% chance of hurricane force winds along with flash flooding.
  5. I'm sorry, it's so hard for a child to feel different or isolated but it's even harder for a parent to watch their child go through something like that. Find out what it is that she wants and make it! Which gluten foods does she consider yummy, make a substitution for her. My daughter had so many food allergies and intolerances when she was younger and...
  6. We can flush! Perfect timing, too. I ate some hummus that had 'natural flavors' in it. I am so good about things like that, I must've skipped right over it when I read the ingredients. Boy am I paying for it now. All 10 people here (we are my family's evacuation shelter) have been super careful not to cc me and I did it to myself! Thank goodness we can...
  7. I'll let you know when they get back to 'normal' after Katrina! We are really fine, only very minor wind damage. Last night we had another scare with all of the flash flooding and tornado warnings in the area. A tornado hit just north of here and there was an an emergency evac of a neighboring town, due to flash flooding. These rain bands won...
  8. We are 'flexitarians' around this house. My husband only eats veggie because I am the cook, but he would never refuse a hamburger. Our youngest daughter eats almost anything, but our oldest is strictly vegan. I was going to recommend Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link which were already stated here. They are both great for recipes...
  9. Thanks again for everyone's concern and thoughts. I appreciate the messages and pm's from all of you.
  10. I just heard that people are trying to return from wherever they evacuated to (all roads in to New Orleans, Jefferson and St.Tammany are closed) which is causing severe bottle-necking on I-10. Police are turning everyone around until further notice. Plus, here are no gas stations open and many of these people have driven a long way to try to get back home...
  11. We made it OK! It was scary for a bit, the giant pine trees in the woods behind my house were bending sideways at one point, but most of the worst stuff missed us. Now the rains have passed, but some local lakes are topping over due to the excessive amount of rainfall..... not the storm surge like they were predicting. We just got power back, it has been...
  12. Lots of rain is all, so far. The power keeps going out, so I'm posting quickly. It seems to have moved a bit closer east than they were predicting last night. Not the best news. My sensitive belly is not taking this well. It may be a while before I can update y'all. Thanks again and please keep up the positive thoughts, we need them right now...
  13. Wow, thanks so much for everyone's concern and especially the good thoughts. We are north of I-12, west of I-59 and are not under mandatory evacuation. Our area is the only section of the parish not ordered to leave. We moved here after the storm because of the safety factor. This neighborhood was one of the only not to flood in south-east Louisiana for...
  14. We are staying, but I'm nervous, even though we now live north of I-12 on the northshore of New Orleans which didn't flood for Katrina. We used to live in lower St. Bernard Parish (well below sea level) When we evacuated for Katrina, I had just been diagnosed with Celiac and couldn't have prepared for the months we would have to spend away from home...
  15. Blue Bell chocolate has wheat flour!!!!!!! WHY???
  16. I was about to post the same about Doritos and trail mix. Even if they did not have wheat, the bowls of snacks were most probably cc's by all the other people eating buns etc. that do contain gluten. I always carry little snack bags of peanuts and raisins or homemade granola, just in case.
  17. Asian markets. I have found rice, tapioca and a combination of both wrappers there. Be careful not to get one with wheat added.
  18. My Grand-Aunt Helen used to make me her famous lemon-jello cake every year for my birthday. Now I need to try to duplicate it. I think it was a basic old-fashioned butter pound cake that she would punch holes in (after it cooled) and drizzle with her brown sugar glaze. The topping was made with a package of lemon jello dissolved in 1 c boiling water...
  19. These sound insane! I am nuts for spring rolls. I usually make the Vietnamese kind with vermicelli noodles inside. I will try this, but leave out the corn and sub basil and mint from my garden for the (yuk!) cilantro. Maybe I'll even whip up some peanut sauce for dipping.
  20. I can't take Immodium. I would be constipated for ever! I was glutened about two weeks ago, got explosive D and the terrible joint pain to the point that I was bedridden for days. The combo of pain meds and immobility caused one of my worst cases of C ever. It was over a week before I finally sent the hubby for some senna and citrate of magnesium. The...
  21. The Open Original Shared Link sounds like a great place, and they're veggie friendly, too. The fact that they're open 24 x 7 makes them look even better since we are always out late when we go to Atlanta. I really hope that pizza place is open and delivers by then. I have never had Gluten-free take away pizza anywhere.
  22. Wow! Thanks for all of the wonderful responses. Now I have so many choices. Gordon Biersch is our one 'regular' spot we go to every year. We go Saturday for brunch and call it 'beer & eggs' They are always super accommodating. We used to love the City Garden (closed down sushi/Chinese/Thai restaurant) and were hoping to find another place like...
  23. ......my thoughts exactly! Very interesting, it makes perfect sense. I wonder if anyone's tested turmeric? .....off to google it!
  24. So completely freaking happy that I was not crazy! My problems all came from Celiac disease, it was wonderful! Also, after being on the gluten-free diet for a while, you just may not need those anti-depressants anymore. My arthritis, fibromyalgia, tingling and nerve pain, severe gut pain, IBS symptoms, constant D or C with horrible gas, fatigue, anemia...
  25. I am also highly sensitive, even the tiniest bit of cc gives me an almost immediate response. And it's not pretty.
