  1. Hi, We're going to Atlanta next month and I was hoping to get some opinions on any Gluten-free friendly restaurants in the Midtown area. We will be staying on Peachtree St N.E. at 17th (around the High) and would love to find places within walking distance. A couple of nights we will drive to dinner, but any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated...

    ARCHIVED Pf Changs

When visiting the Raleigh, NC location, we had the lettuce wraps, garlic spinach and salt and pepper fried calamari. It was all so delicious, but I really had missed calamari since going Gluten-free. Back home, the calamari was not on the Gluten-free menu! My server saw my distress and asked what was wrong. He asked the chef and voila! They used a clean...
  3. The ONLY thing I consider safe at Sonic are the drinks. I have gotten sick from the tater tots and their bacon.
  4. Either Destin or the neighboring San Destin had a fabulous Birding Festival in the spring. Right outside of San Destin is the most beautiful little place called Grayton Beach(Also Seaside, Watercolor, etc.) Awesome birding there. Lots and lots of trails and other birding sites around the area. The visitor's center on 98 at 331 has loads of info.
  5. We lived outside of Destin for a year after hurricane Katrina, so if you go there, I know quite a few places. My favorite restaurant is 331 which is on hwy 331 just north of Destin in Freeport. Their entire menu is written on a blackboard daily, plus they have a great sushi bar. It's right on the bay, so super fresh seafood is never a question. Spectacular...
  6. I completely agree. There are no worries about what was in that pre-packaged food-like item when you dine in a higher end restaurant. In my experience, if you call a day or so ahead of time and speak with the kitchen manager or chef, they will prepare you something special or modify an existing menu item. More than likely, there will already be a number...
  7. .....an added word of caution about Asian markets, find someone there who can translate if you have any questions. One time I wanted to buy some noodles, but the ingredients were water and strach. I don't know if there is gluten in strach! (Turns out it was wheat starch.)
  8. At my local Asian market I buy tapioca starch, arrowroot starch, potato starch, sweet potato starch and potato flour. I also get white, brown, and sweet rice starches and flours as well as toasted brown rice powder and glutenous rice powder. I buy all of my rice vermicelli, pad thai noodles, rice stick noodles, fresh wide rice noodles and buckwheat soba noodles...
  9. Sounds interesting, could you start a new thread about your visit with the nutritionist? I really want to know what they say.
  10. Not even a little. Well, he thinks he does, but he still gets breadcrumbs everywhere and even though I have a dedicated cabinet for the non-gluten-free things, he NEVER remembers to put anything back there. Then I have to wind up touching them to put them away. He does get his peanut butter/jam/butter etc. out before touching the bread and he tries...
  11. I hate you......(please don't take that the wrong way)
  12. The pro-biotics will help a lot, but you do need to give your system time to heal. Try staying away from dairy, soy and gassy foods for awhile. Some people are bothered by nightshades at first as well (eggplant, tomatoes, peppers and potatoes) Stick with simple, bland foods for about a week or so, then gradually add in some raw veggies. After a couple of...
  13. You sound like a classic Celiac. If so, think of it as a blessing, not a curse. The Gluten-free diet may seem difficult to stick to at first, but the benefits are wonderful! Cut out all gluten immediately unless you want to go to a doc in the near future to be tested (if you're off of gluten, the blood test will come back negative, but many of us here...
  14. They're going to ask way more than 20 questions, the entire time you're there. That is unless you sit everyone down together on the first night and announce that you don't like anyone making a fuss over you and that you will explain exactly what celiac is and the gluten-free lifestyle. Say it ONCE, answer a few questions and then THAT'S IT, no more mention...
  15. Oh my gawd that sounds delish! My family thanks you for the inspiration. Hey, I just realized that your sig quote is Mal from Firefly. Awesome show. Why is it that smart entertainment never makes it much past the first season?
  16. We have one small cabinet where my DH and DD keep their bread, cereal, oatmeal and snacks. There is also a dedicated "gluteny" toaster on the gluten-only counter. Everything else is gluten-free and if something becomes accidentally cc'd, we label it as such.
  17. ....sounds like you have an awesome doc!

    ARCHIVED Alcohol...

What are you drinking? I have problems with Absolut, it is made from wheat. I know they say all distilled alcohol is supposed to be Gluten-free, but I am very sensitive to getting a gluten reaction. I can drink rum or 100% agave tequila with no issues whatsoever!
  19. When we first brought our dog to the vet for his bleeding paw pads, he knew almost immediately that it was probably wheat in the dog food. My vet says that dogs shouldn't have MOST grains, it's not a natural part of their diet and many of them react to it. It showed up in our dog as a wheat allergy (his paws itch so bad that he bites them until they bleed...
  20. ....but, if you want puppy kisses.......
  21. Those are awesome! Plus, I find that coconut oil is a great butter substitute. It has it's own "buttery" qualities.
  22. You're welcome! You just have to be married forever and have teenagers! Our youngest daughter had tons of allergies growing up, so I was kind of forced to become creative with cooking. I actually love to cook and experiment. My favorite books to read are usually cookbooks, but I do not think I have ever followed a recipe in my...
  23. We made a chocolate cake (not Namaste, it was Pamela's) using veggie mayo instead of eggs and oil and soy milk in place of dairy. It was totally DELISH! Maybe you could try these subs using whatever you can tolerate. OOPS, sorry, just read "grain-free"
  24. Tonight is my niece's 4th birthday and the whole family is going to my mom's for turkey dinner. She promises it will be completely Gluten-free and she will get every pot, pan, utensil and cutting board super clean before she begins. She is making roast turkey, mashed potatoes, rice and gravy(without flour) steamed broccoli, and peas. Sounds Gluten-free...
  25. Yes. I am so jealous whenever people post about how their husband threw out all the bread to keep a completely Gluten-free kitchen or how their kids support them. My family thinks they are doing OK, but still make grilled cheese in my Gluten-free specific pans or use my colander because they say they will wash it and I'm just crazy for thinking that...
