ARCHIVED 8 Years And I Am Still Oh So Tired!
bakingbarb replied to macbadgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are right. My daughter gets tested for her iron levels all the time. One test which is the common one shows the immediately available iron but not the deep stores. That test is not as commonly tested and it tends to show empty. I think some people get an infusion but we take a highly absorb able iron and it helps us. If you want the name please let... -
ARCHIVED Barbecue Sauce Help Please....
bakingbarb replied to Mistilyn's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Why not plums to replace the tomatoes. I used to make a plum bbq sauce, plums, onions, garlic, vinegar, brown sugar. Oh and it is a cooked sauce, just cook on low until it is the thickness you want and strain or not. Apricots or peaches make a nice sauce too but with different qualities then the plum of course. -
ARCHIVED Coconut Flour A Godsend
bakingbarb replied to draeko's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Susan, it is very disappointing to hear that, I really don't like when companies hide things. I was wondering the same thing about pizza crust. The coconut flour though isn't sweet in my opinion. It adds bulk and it makes everything else better so I think it is worth trying in yeast breads/pizza at least once. I don't feel like making pizza again any... -
ARCHIVED The Best Biscuits I Have Ever Eaten
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I had seen something about club soda before and had been meaning to ask about it. How do you use it? Fresh and bubbly I assume but I figure I best ask. I was grinding dessicated coconut in my vitamix but it doesn't come out like the flour you buy, it is chunkier but I liked it still. In cakes it works great. I am anxious to try a quick bread with... -
ARCHIVED Searching In Desperation?
bakingbarb replied to momto2monkeys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS Don't mean to yell but I will tell you what happened to me and my son as a new born. He threw up all the time. By the time he was 2 months old he was skin and bones. I had been to Dr after Dr. We had been to the ER at least 4 times, everytime we were told he was fine. I was told it was me, it was my milk, I was doing something... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Homebrew Beer
bakingbarb replied to WayneB's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Wayne, are you going to be making beer? As time as given the beer time to develop I am liking it more and more. It is somewhat pale but not see through, kind of like a hefeweizen look to it. There is some real good hoppiness to it. I think next time I will make this recipe but I am going to use the bitter hops combined with the Amarillo hops. Also... -
ARCHIVED The Best Biscuits I Have Ever Eaten
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The recipe I was thinking of dissolves the baking powder in the eggs then mixes it with the rest of the ingredients. It was a German cake recipe and I have made it before but I don't recall that this method made any difference or not. -

ARCHIVED The Best Biscuits I Have Ever Eaten
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes it is pricey. Which is why I kept putting of buying it, I had been grinding my own but it was never a powder. Although I would use it again if I had to because it did help my baking and it didn't really taste like coconut in such small amounts. I have been on the KAF baking circle for years and they have had all kinds of conversations about baking... -
ARCHIVED French Fries
bakingbarb posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I apologize if this info is here already but I went back quite a few pages and didn't see anything. Are there any frozen french fries that are ok to eat? I checked Heinz website (oreida) and it says they cannot say anything is gluten free except vinegars and ketchup. I don't want to eat these all the time, just as I don't want to make homemade all the... -
ARCHIVED The Best Biscuits I Have Ever Eaten
bakingbarb posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ya know when you ate gluten and the biscuits were flaky but at the same time they left you wanting a huge drink of anything? These biscuits are flaky and yummy but don't leave me needing a huge drink. Gluten biscuits always had something that didn't sit right with me, they could be gooey, thick, heavy, dry and so on. This biscuit recipe sits perfectly... -
ARCHIVED Hershey Candy
bakingbarb replied to celiacsucks's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I did a google search for nut free chocolate a lot comes up but so many of the companies don't say anything about wheat. I think that is fairly irresponsible since they know the importance of allergy info you would think they would list all of them right off the bat. -
ARCHIVED Hershey Candy
bakingbarb replied to celiacsucks's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm sorry, this must be hard for you. Hershey's chocolate bars are something I have eaten every day of my life (I'm old enough to be your mom so thats a long time) and to not be able to eat them any more is hard for me. Something that I have used to replace the Hershey's bar is Open Original Shared Link milk chocolate chips. They are creamy and taste pretty... -
ARCHIVED Wen Haircare
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was thinking about doing this earlier. So when I read your post I went asap and wrote to them. Thanks -
I was thinking that the rice chex could replace some things in cooking. Breading? What I was really thinking was a crust though for a summer pie.

Thanks everyone. It was just such a rough weekend for me. They know how hard this is for me, I have told them how hard it is for me to eat out and that I always plan ahead because of it. Hence the lara bars. After reviewing how the whole day went we kind of feel like they are users. They ate my food when we finally stopped and never said thank you...

ARCHIVED Wen Haircare
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
SIGH and CRY! I just checked the Chaz Dean website and so far it looks like all the products have wheat in them. I won't be using them again. Its too bad because the concept is great. Just means I need to keep looking for the ultimate conditioner for my hair. What are you using now? I have pantene and redken in my shower. I read that pantene... -
ARCHIVED Wen Haircare
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have been using it for about a week and I can tell you I will never use it again. My hair was so soft it was amazing but like I said my hair didn't curl either. I am so allergic to this stuff it is scary. Shortly after getting out of the shower I could see my face getting red and puffy with spots all over and some blisters. My scalp was burning,... -
ARCHIVED Quinoa Or Potato Vodka & A Nice Gesture
bakingbarb replied to Octoberme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, what he said! I was drinking the Smirnoff Ice, which is a malt beverage, not Smirnoff vodka. My thinking was it was Smirnoff so it must be vodka, except the bottle clearly says malt beverage. SIGH Sorry I caused confusion on that one. I should have stated the difference. Also as to being impatient, ya me too. It finally dawned on me that my... -
This isn't the first time this has happened but it goes something like this; I get stuck out with friends, we go for a drive. I have snacks with me for just in case (lara bars) but they chose to eat somewhere I didn't think I could eat safely. Or just had no way of knowing. Its like going for a night out with friends but going places that they pick that you...

ARCHIVED Quinoa Or Potato Vodka & A Nice Gesture
bakingbarb replied to Octoberme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are not the only one! I was drinking Smirnoff ice for months DOH It is a malt beverage I mean really now how many times can I read the same label with out it getting through to my brain. Btw being gluten free for only 2 weeks is not enough time to heal. I have been gluten-free for almost 6 months now and I would say the first 3 months were rough... -
Guittiard milk chocolate chips and dried cranberries with a cup of earl grey tea. It is my addiction.

ARCHIVED Calling All You Pizza Makers
bakingbarb replied to MyMississippi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am interested in trying this. I am hoping the cheese makes it better, cause cheese makes everything better. I have tried about 4 recipes for pizza crust, all of them are pretty similar really. What happens is the texture is off of course but the dough where the toppings sit gets soggy. Yes I prebake. I even prebaked one, froze it and then reheated it... -
My local grocery store doesn't have them in yet but Walmart had them so I bought two boxes because I was so excited to see them. They are kinda boring so I admit I put sugar on them, bananas if we have them.

ARCHIVED Wen Haircare
bakingbarb posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Linkhaircare sounds wonderful. It is a conditioner that cleans your hair. Great concept, the reviews on Open Original Shared Linkare mixed. My hair is long and curly/wavy but it gets super dry on the top layer and the ends but the roots can get dirty fast depending on how much stuff I put in my hair. So this Wen stuff is getting my hair...
