ARCHIVED Super Sensitive And Frustrated With Many Questions
Sailing Girl replied to sylviaann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's no doubt in my mind that you're reacting to GLUTEN. You are not crazy, and I honestly doubt you have other intolerances. You may not know that the FDA currently does not regulate how much gluten a product can include before it can be labeled "gluten-free." The agency has proposed allowing 20 parts per million (ppm). That means a product can have... -
ARCHIVED What Is With All The "look Out For Gluten In ~ Insert Toiletry Item~"
Sailing Girl replied to mattathayde's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi dilettantesteph, I use Burts Bees lip balm all the time and never react -- and I'm super-sensitive. But I haven't tried their new formulation (the one that contains soybean oil) -- when I saw they reformulated, I grabbed all I could find of the old ones. I don't react to soy, but I don't think soybean oil is particularly healthy, either, so it's worth... -

All these should help as you try to figure out the culprit. You'll likely be able to add some of them back in after he's healed some more. Also -- have you eliminated distilled vinegars and distilled (but originally gluten-based) alcohol? Some of us react to these -- I'm one of them, and can't have most store-bought condiments. I know you've eliminated... -

Great information, Keila -- it explains a lot about CC in beans and other grains. Thanks! -
ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
Nope, for several reasons: 1) DD is eight, extremely bright, can read labels, and knows better than to "get her hands on something" and eat it without checking it. In fact, she's known better since she was four. 2) We hadn't been out that day, and DD ate only whole foods (nothing processed) for breakfast and lunch. In addition, we shared breakfast and... -

Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
Like many people I've seen write on this forum, there have been times I've been so depressed and discouraged about constant reactions that I've been tempted to stop eating. I was reacting to foods that are supposed to be gluten-free, and I was almost constantly sick. But now, thanks in part to this thread, I've gathered the information I need to stay... -
ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
Yes, EXACTLY. Both processing and packaging of foods on the same equipment can lead to cross contamination, starting at the point of harvest and continuing through the food supply chain, just as it does with oats. My point is that there are OTHER foods (such as soybeans, as Keila has pointed out, and beans, as Mike has pointed out) that also are harvested... -

Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
My understanding has been that oats are a concern if they are grown in a non-dedicated field, which also could contain some wheat grass -- not because they're processed in much the same manner as wheat. Weluvgators, thanks so much for your information! I hope you report back again after you meet with that friendly farmer. As a super-sensitive, it's very... -

Two more products down for the super-sensitive: -- Bionaturae tomato paste (ingredients: organic tomatoes). My daughter had a horrible gluten reaction after eating nearly an entire jar of this stuff (and no, she doesn't react to nightshades). I tested it and it was faint positive, so probably okay for non-super-sensitives. -- Haagen Dazs raspberry sorbet... -

Yes, I have. Methodically. And I've also eliminated and then challenged four or five of the most likely suspects (dairy, soy, corn, nightshades, nuts), in some cases a couple of times. Nothing. I do not react to any of these. But I am extremely, exquisitely sensitive to gluten. -

I also want to thank Mike M. I'm a novice at using the test strips compared to him, but I've already explained so, so many CC incidents with them -- involving several supposedly perfectly safe products. Like dilettantesteph, I was only using a tiny amount (a few teaspoons or tablespoons of spice or flavoring at most in a huge dish), but it didn't matter ... -

Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
I do make all my own food. ALL OF IT. I've become a pretty good cook, and my friends and family enjoy the meals I make. I buy grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and organic vegetables and cook them at home. I get eggs from a local farm. I was in a Wal-Mart today to buy aluminum foil for a non-food project and was amazed at all the cr*p they sell there masquerading... -

Steph, I'm so sorry you got glutened and you're feeling so down. I agree with Mike's suggestion -- if there's a safe place to eat out (PF Changs), go get a nice not-home-cooked meal. If you tell us what the things are that your store no longer carries, maybe we can help you replace them. I'm not sure what to do about the Thai Kitchen stuff, though -- I... -

Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and excellent advice. I've calmed down a bunch since this morning, and come to a couple of conclusions: 1) No matter what anyone says, I obviously have to keep DD and me safe, and that involves continuing to do everything I've been doing. 2) It doesn't matter that my friends think I'm insane -- I know... -

Sailing Girl replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
Good morning again, I wanted to let you all know I just tested Thai Kitchen's fish sauce using the EZ-Gluten Eliza test and it was a very faint positive (so 10 ppm or less). That's two Thai Kitchen products with trace glutens in them (dilettantestef reported the peanut sauce also was contaminated). However, the products almost certainly are safe for most... -

I AM SO SICK OF THIS!!!!!! (long long rant, sorry, but would love to get suggestions if anyone's got them) Just about every time I eat out anywhere I get glutened or CC'd, no matter how careful I am (and believe me, I'm careful). So I'm extremely reluctant (as is everyone else on this thread) to let other people cook for me. Yesterday, after a long, long... -
ARCHIVED Can You Wash A Salad?
Sailing Girl replied to DeerGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm a super-sensitive, and it's *certain* that enough would remain to get me to react. Gluten is a sticky molecule and I think it would be impossible to remove it all from lettuce, which is very porous and absorbs water. I wouldn't eat it if you paid me ! -

Phooey! I've had an unopened jar of that in my cabinet for awhile, trying to get up the nerve to try it. Into the trash it goes. Thanks for the warning! For what it's worth, I love those test strips and have had good luck with them -- I just wish the price would come down ... -

Sailing Girl replied to WendyG's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Disney is the best place ever for us! When you get in the park, stop by Guest Services (right by the entrance) and get their gluten-free food list. There's lots and lots to eat on it. Then, when you get to a counter service food place, ask any worker there for a manager to bring you out the "allergy binder" (big binder with all the ingredients lists).... -

Sailing Girl replied to lbd's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Laurie, that is an amazing theory! We may never know if it's true or not (as you say, the research money just isn't there). But it wouldn't surprise me. I, too, think gluten is poison for everyone, and I don't like calling "celiac" or "gluten intolerance" a disease. You wouldn't tell someone who's slowly being poisoned by arsenic that they've got "arsenic... -
ARCHIVED Could This Be Celiac?
Sailing Girl replied to Anna'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Laura, I don't know whether it's Celiac. But the symptoms you mention -- joint pain, numbness/tingling in extremities (due to nerve damage), and osteopenia are common in Celiacs. Celiacs also are at far greater risk for lymphoma than the general population. You're right -- false negatives are extremely common on both the blood tests and the biopsy... -

Sailing Girl replied to raisin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmmm ... I'm not sure how it would work for you. But I think it's perhaps worth a try (you never know). I don't think it's any messier than other hair color products -- and it's not toxic, so unless you have a particular sensitivity to henna (some people do), you don't even need to wear gloves while applying it! I get mine from Lame Advertisement.com -- nice... -

Hi Raisin, I'm another super-sensitive who's been glutened by shampoo and conditioner (and no, I didn't *eat* the stuff -- but once some shampoo ran down my face into my mouth, and another time some of my hair blew into my mouth in a strong wind). Since then, I've methodically (some would say neurotically) eliminated all gluten-containing products from... -
ARCHIVED Could Sensitivity Be Directly Related To Diet Compliance?
Sailing Girl replied to Mike M's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I, too, have wondered about this. When I first went gluten-free (because I was nursing and my daughter needed to be gluten-free), it was really just major-sources-of-wheat-free -- I was living in a mixed home, still drinking *beer* and eating foods with soy sauce on occasion, using the same non-stick pans, etc., as the gluten eater living there. I didn...
