  1. Hi Liz IMO you are doing nothing wrong. You are both going through an adjustment period which is pretty normal when you make this kind of dietary change. I was starving at first and I ate a lot of peanut butter and honey. Hmm, I still eat a lot of peanut butter and honey. Mix them, 2 parts PB to one part honey, stir in some unsweetened shredded coconut...
  2. Hi Rhoger1 I know there are people who have been on the SCD for years and use L-glutamine so it must be legal as long as there is no sugar or starch. As far as candida, I read that Elaine said the diet will discourage candida even if you eat fruit and honey. I eat a lot of fruit and honey and my GI test just came back candida-free. 10 weeks is a...
  3. Hi Emily I've been on the SCD for 16 months and it has done wonders for my digestion but zip for sleep. If you continue to have problems sleeping, then there may be a non-diet reason. I hope you have a good doctor that will help you pursue this. Chocolate (gasp!) has caffiene in it. Are you eating that late at night? If you can force yourself to give up...
  4. Hi Liz Every time I read something by someone who treats the diet like a religious cult, I go back to the book and read what Elaine really said. In BTVC (2004) on page 71 she says: "There is no specified schedule for introducing foods withe exception of homemade yogurt...The order for introducing ... varies with each individual" I would go right ahead...
  5. Bea When I made my first batch of cabbage juice, I used 2 capsules of Country Life acidophillous, just emptied them into the blender. And I didn't measure the cabbage or water. Typical! I've been drinking it for three days now and it has improved my digestion, which has been a bit stressed from too many blueberries and plums.
  6. Liz I wouldn't worry too much about following the stages in pecanbread. Elaine said that she was unsure how important is was to follow an introduction to the diet, and her recommendations changed with each new edition of the book. pecanbread is primarily a site for parents of autistic children, not for people with ceilac or UC. So don't feel like you are...
  7. I strained my first patch of cabbage juice today and I like it! I used a couple of acidophilous capsules as a starter and after 3 days on the counter the juice had a pleasant tang. I'll know by tomorrow if I should keep drinking it! I have been using Sacromyces Boulardii. It is a beneficial yeast that supposedy safeguards against c. diff infection and...
  8. Hi Pickles I am VERY impressed that you've read the whole thread. I've read it, too but it took me a year and a half! I don't know any doctors in Seattle, but I can identify with the quinoa scenerio. I went to a nurse practitioner who told me that I should be eating millet or buckwheat because there are nutrients in grains that are necessary for human...
  9. I agree with Sherry. You are here, you are thinking about it. Eliminate the rice and sugar. You might find that life is easier w/o the sugar addiction. And you might discover that rice is not the friend you think it is.
  10. Hi Bea Welcome to the thread. I'm sorry you are not able to eat nuts or fruits. When I started the SCD 16 months ago I still had digestive symptoms from my gluten-eating days, despite over a year of gluten-free eating. I could eat some fruit and small amounts of nuts. Now I can eat larger quantities, and have gone overboard on the fruit eating a few times...
  11. I think you nailed it. As far as kimchi--every recipe I have seen calls for sugar, so make sure you read the label. I make my own with honey. It's very easy. There is also kombucha, a probiotic product that I like, but I have never seen an official SCD comment on it. It is fermented mushroom tea.
  12. Rhoger1 You asked about legal canned foods on the SCD. I don't think a list exists. Elaine mentions in her book which she thought were okay and which were not, but unfortunately her decisions were based on information and brands available 30-40 years ago. She says in the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle: canned fish in oil or water--legal all...
  13. Liz While you are waiting for the book you can check out the website and get much of the same info: Open Original Shared Link I think once you get going you will find it is easy and simple to prepare SCD for the whole family. Some combo of meat, chicken, fish, eggs with fruit or vegetables at every meal. Snacks can probably be tailored to each person...
  14. Ah hah! My experience exactly with dairy, and why I am dairy-free. I did a dairy challenge after about 7-8 months and still got the brain fog. It is so not worth it. I have yet to start the pickles. It's been too hot and I've been too busy. But soon.
  15. Hey! Don't quit before you start. This is a very simple diet. Eat whole foods, meaning meat, eggs, fish, fruits, veggies, nuts, honey, yogurt, hard cheese and nothing else. What could be simpler than that? Many of us are dairy free and therefore do not eat the yogurt. The diet still works. I have to say that cooking is very easy on this diet, no fancy...
  16. Liz You might want to check out Open Original Shared Link This is the yahoo group that is very oriented towards UC. And they make me really appreciate this forum where things are celiac-oriented!
  17. Check out this website: Open Original Shared Link It mentions low TSH and low t4 as symptoms of adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism. Of course if you haven't aleady read Open Original Shared Link then you've got some reading to do! Good luck!
  18. Hi Emily You don't say how old you are or how long you have been sick, but the longer it's been, the more likely it is that you have nutritional deficiencies from malabsorption. Have you had bloodwork done to check vitamin and mineral levels? If you haven't and can't afford it, you might want to consider upping your intake of Vitmins D, B12, folate, zinc...
  19. I found a SCD legal recipe for sweet dill pickles on the yahoo group and I am going to try to make them. Anybody else want to try, too, and we can compare results? Here's the recipe: 4 thinly sliced unpeeled cucumbers 2/3 cup honey 1 cup vinegar 1/2 cup water 2 tabblespoons dried dill weed (I will use fresh) 2 tsp white pepper Thoroughly blend...
  20. Winter squash season is coming up--very filling!
  21. I did well on Armour, too (past tense). You might want to check out: Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link I strongly urge anyone on Armour to read these sites immediately!
  22. Sherry, I am pretty sure there is no way to know what is in the food in this country, either. Are you on thyroid meds?
  23. I think you hit on something profound, here, Ali. Yes, it works because it is a healthy diet. I think that's an important thing to remember. And everyone comes to this point with different degrees of toxicity and different healing abilities. I have Gilbert's Syndrome, which apparently slows down the detoxing process in the liver. However, the detoxing...
  24. Hi glutengal Welcome! Unfortunately, Turtle Mt Coconut Yogurt contains several ingredients on the SCD "illegal" list, like cane juice, guar gum, and rice starch. SCD legal yougurt is made by fermenting milk for 24 hours to remove all lactose. Those who don't use dairy products try fermenting coconut milk, cabbage juice, cabbage, almond milk, etc....
  25. I have no problem eating my own home-dehydrated fruit made from local, unsprayed fruit, but when I ate store bought organic raisins they made me a little bit sick. It really makes me wonder what the heck is in commercial dried fruit besides fruit. Sherry, did you make your own fermented cabbage juice? And if so, what did you use for a starter? And Sherry...
