  1. With skeptics I go for a combination of education and sovereignty (as in "it's my body and this is what I know it requires"). Education as in clarifying that celiac is a disease, not a diet. Firm but unemotional tone helps. Acknowledge it takes effort to be gluten-free but isn't it wonderful that no drugs are required, and that with time the effort becomes...
  2. It may indeed be cashew-related. -Were the cashews dry roasted? Some dry-roasted nuts apparently use wheat in the processing, but it isn't an "ingredient". -Do you have the package? Does it say anything about shared equipment or facilities with wheat? -were they seasoned, and if so are the spices listed separately or is there one of those mystery...
  3. negative bloodwork strong dietary reaction no intention of going for biopsy - Dr. think's I'm fine, is okay with my diet. Have 2 cousins, one w/pos blood & biopsy, one (genetic half sister as our mothers identical twins) pos blood, never had biopsy. Going for a biopsy is your decision. Not that the rest of us won't share our 2-cents worth ...
  4. In New Haven, Foster's is pretty accommodating (they will even do gluten-free birthday cake with advance warning), but there are knowledge gaps, last time we were there no one seemed to realize miso often (or perhaps always, depending on your view & the source of info) contains gluten. Ibiza did a great job with warning when I was part of a group meal...
  5. Bulk can be tricky, as scoops might migrate from one bin to the next, or someone without food sensitivities might be unaware of 'powdering' the aisle with whatever they are scooping. And depending on the store the refill process for the bins could introduce cc as well. Co-ops, buying groups and buying direct are all ideas to pursue. Or maybe even ask...
  6. Okay, my edit window is gone now, but you can also put some (1/8 tsp?) dried, ground ginger in the 'do it yourself' drink, ginger is very stomach calming and this helps mask the saltiness of the drink
  7. I had a similar caffeine thing (although pre-gluten-free I was already more sensitive than you were, sounds like). I don't have any proven explanations, but many folks point out that as our gut heals it does get better at digesting the gluten-free food that we eat, and also that as we heal our bodies can have stronger reactions to gluten. So could be...
  8. Just to clarify, not sure that *all* powdered latex gloves have gluten in the powder, but some do. Maybe this will be a trend like shredded cheese, where most of the anti-glomming agents are now 'cellulose' and not a gluten-containing powder. My dentist's office said "oh, we went to non-latex gloves to avoid problems with latex allergies, and the vinyl...
  9. wow! glad you figured it out before drinking!!! does anyone know of this UofN lab? Is it possible that Teeccino had them test for wheat protein but not for barley?? Maybe Teeccino's marketing people are so exposed to barley that their judgement is affected
  10. Okay, I realize the shake is more recent than the bloating, so it isn't *the* reason, but I know my body doesn't tolerate any of those things well, not even the ones that say "gluten-free". Not sure why... Good luck figuring everything out! I was lucky, my celiac belly started just a few months before I self-diagnosed, and disappeared in the first...
  11. Have heard the same thing about drywall and compound, it may have gluten. Also did he wear plastic or latex gloves while painting? Some have powder (to keep them from sticking) that contains gluten. Hope your DH feels better soon!
  12. I feel your pain - been there. If 'water' continues more than a while (depending on your health, pain tolerance, etc. anything from 12-24 hrs?) call your dr. and get tested for electrolytes, I ended up on prescription potassium (just for 3 days I think) and it was a mini-miracle for my system. You can also try a sports drink or do your own, 1/4 tsp...
  13. Okay, the eating karma worked out fine! Hooray The organizers, in person, were much more understanding. I got my "celiac is a disease, not a diet" message across in an understated, but effective, way. Most of the food was fine, just had to skip the pasta course. Caterer was a bit in the "I can't guarantee anything, stuff gets tossed around...
  14. For me this thread definitely underscores the 'know your own body' concept! Luckily I tolerate wine just fine (my spouse's #1 hobby is tasting wine). But I certainly used to love bread and barley, and have decided that my health is a lot more important than eating gluten For those of us celiac's who do not tolerate wine, it may well be a reaction...
  15. Okay, this is a premature post because the event *hasn't happened yet*. But... My spouse and I love dining out. We usually make reservations, and unless we are actually going directly to the restaurant ('do you have a table for 2 in 10 minutes?) we always tell them that I am gluten-free. If the reservations have been made well in advance I call again...
  16. Hooray for safe traveling! On water at security - I simply empty any liquid in my water bottle before security, go through with it empty (and uncapped). There is almost always a drinking fountain someplace inside security where I can refill my bottle & put the cap back on. Much less annoying for me than the "dollars per bottle" that is indeed the...
  17. Hm, it's flavored and perhaps colored and has a "secret recipe"...sounds like something to consider avoiding until an "all clear" I had Tuaca once before going gluten-free and all agreed it was mildly dangerous (folks seemed to drink more than they thought...) I didn't realize it was from Italy, don't know if any of the celiac organizations there would...
  18. I've been gluten-free for 7 months and initially my gluten reactions were a lot stronger, then they got weaker (or I got better at reducing cc), then I had a bad couple weeks at 5 months...so inconsistency sounds normal to me! Lots of posters seem to notice a return to lesser symptoms at either 9 months or 2 yrs on gluten-free diet. Most popular theory...
  19. Celiac Chicks do have a very helpful website if you're NYC area! Also check out Open Original Shared Link by a gluten-free (and allergic to nuts and fish, plus I think is non-dairy and if possible kosher) diner. She has a whole list of "safe" restaurants down the right-hand side, some with gluten-free menus and some who don't have a special menu but a...
  20. I usually say "I cannot eat anything with wheat, flour, barley or rye - this also means I cannot eat any bread, soy sauce or miso. Even a very small amount will make me very sick". Again, if the server doesn't seem to get it - or doesn't seem to care - go to the manager or the kitchen. Generally, I have best luck with tiny family-run places or fancy...
  21. Is this a new thing for your daughter? If yes, checking it out is definitely a good idea. If not, could it be as simple as a highly developed sense of taste? Some folks (I've read anything from 5% to 25%) are "high tasters", meaning everything tastes pretty strong to them. Typically they don't like fruit sauces on meat because they are "too sweet...
  22. glad you're feeling better! I had to get a px for potassium one time - long story, but obviously I was dehydrated at that point Took me a long time to get to 'normal' after that, but one thing that helps me if I feel a little dry is to use a mix of real salt and a 'fake' salt with a relatively high (eg 4% of rda) potassium content. And a little...
  23. Sounds like you have a supportive family and are taking many healthy steps, congrats! And it does get easier, eventually Luckily for your upcoming trip, there is a prominent gluten-free blogger in seattle, her website has a lot of local restaurants noted, Open Original Shared Link. Also do a search for "seattle" on this website and you should find...
  24. good on the doctor progress munckinette! I am very fair, but generally don't burn super-easily (burn in water or on snow, not usually otherwise). However I used to feel the sun on my skin as an immediate low level burn even if there was no change in color. Now that I am gluten-free, I swear that I am *less* sensitive to the sun. I have been exposing...
  25. Well, with practice you will get more willing to be assertive - otherwise it's an awfully limited diet or way to much cc! Don't worry, you are only 1 1/2 wks into it - it *does* get easier. If you can, try visiting your butcher during a relatively slow time of the day & explain your new medical restriction. Your butcher should be able to tell you...
