  1. I checked my toaster for crumbs, and cleaned it out. Mine has a door on the bootom that opens to clean it out. There were plenty of those awful gluten crumbs in the tray and on top around the edges of the openings. I've used my toaster since cleaning it and had no problems. Just do a good job of cleaning it is my opinion. Same with pans and pots. Clean...
  2. There is a P F Chang's Chinese out there in Chantilly I think. Probably a Carraba's Italian somewhere in the area too, although I haven't tried their gluten-free menu.
  3. This would be a really good time to learn to cook! I used to cook, prior to gluten-free, and it was so easy. 10 minutes of the boxed pot pie in the nuker and away to the races. Or 12 minutes for the pre-made rice mix on the stove with some water and I was good to go. I had some learning to do after going gluten-free. Did you know they use fire to...
  4. Hi, I am no expert on the tests, but there are people on the forum who seem to know them pretty well. You might want to post your test results in the pre-diagnosis testing area and ask for help interpreting them. Or search some of the other threads on test results. There are several antigen tests, and I haven't read anything that says you need a positive...
  5. I haven't tried Fibercon. I do take pissyllium husks powder, and it works fine for me. It is nice to have the loose powder since you can just mix a little into your foods instead of popping a pill. I generally add some to my big pile of rice fixins I make on weekends. It has no strong taste so it is not a problem that way. I got my psiyllium husks powder...
  6. Great advice! I totally agree, make your diet simple simple simple. Only add things one at a time every few days. Rice and veggies and maybe some meat, with salt and pepper only to start. I had a month and a 1/2 of gut spasms after going gluten-free, just healing up reactions. Lots of quivering and shaking going on down there. It takes some time...
  7. I don't remember a lot of my dreams generally. But I did have one gluten dream after about 4 months. It was pretty fun, involved Boris Badenoff and Natasha his cartoon accomplice. There is a thread around here about gluten dreams somewhere, pretty long one too. I think they made some of the dreams from that thread into "Tales from the Darkside" episodes...
  8. Why not just get rid of the kids? Oops, not quite socially correct I guess. And I am just kidding! I agree that it is worthwhile getting the testing done, blood work anyway, to know that you are or aren't celiac. The reason I think that is because you have kids, and it is important to know for their sakes if they might inherit the disease. It may...
  9. I was glad to find out it was what I thought it was. Or rather what my sister thought it was. My sister figured it out, not me or the doctors. I was confused at first about what the heck I could eat, and made some mistakes right off. And it has taken quite awhile to learn to avoid the stuff. But the celiac diagnosis makes so much sense to me thinking...
  10. Wow, I hope you will reconsider the wait for research and posion yourself in the meantime idea! Seems like a pretty negative approach to things. Not trying to be down on you at all, but there are other ways to look at it. Sounds like you have done a good job of staying gluten free for a quite a while. I have only been on the diet since last Dec-07,...
  11. Cool video MSAU!22! Thanks, it's nice to see their gluten-free cookies being made.
  12. But you'll miss out on the height of celiac fashion with that attitude! Hi GFAvenger, Thanks for the info about turmeric and inflammation! What got me thinking about all this is a a commercial for Enbrel. In the commercial they have a warning that Enbrel is an immune suppressant, so you might be susceptible to infections while on it. So, my...
  13. Hi Lisa, It could be quick or it could take a while too. You might want to try some pro-biotics for him also, as his gut flora is most likely off-balance. I had about a month and a half of healing symptoms myself, gut convulsions etc. But I was feelng better after the first week. If you are new to doing gluten free cooking, check out some of the threads...
  14. Hi Bones, The healing time varies. You may begin to feel better in a few days or it might take weeks or months. It depends also on how well you eliminate the cause of the problems. Gluten can hide in many foods where it isn't obvious. A very restricted diet to start out is a good way to go. All home cooked foods vs. bought in a box or jar or can...
  15. Hi and welcome. You might want to check out the dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) area for the symptoms related to skin issues. DH is a skin problem that shows up in some people with celiac.
  16. Heck yeah, one more mile, maybe two! Welcome to the board. If it makes you sick don't eat it is pretty good advice. How important to know for sure you have celiac vs gluten intolerance is up to you. Testing will possibly confirm your disease but is not 100% accurate either. The difference might be that with celiac there is a proven relation to body damage...
  17. Welcome to the forum puggirl! Lots of people post questions in the pre-diagnosis screening area about testing and such. And then there is the post diagnosis coping area for getting along the way in style. There are plenty of threads on various topics that may relate to your concerns, and there also are articles to read. You might want to search for threads...
  18. Her symptoms do sound like celiac symptoms. You can always try her on the diet and see if she improves. It could take some weeks to know for sure though, sounds like she is in a tough state intestinally speaking. I suggest you eliminate any soy from her diet regardless, as it is a known problem for intestinal development in young rats. Not saying she...
  19. Hmmm, are gluten eaters better in bed or something? I got no experience with that I'm afraid. Such a sad tail. Have you checked with your doctor though? Could also just be a coincidence of timing with some other ugly bugly disease.
  20. You may have what the doctors call "silent celiac". This is when a person has the condition but has no GI symptoms. I think quite a few people have silent celiac, and don't know it. They sometimes find out when they go to the doctor for one of the associated diseases that can pop up suddenly. And then they find out they have celiac. If these people had...
  21. I have had accidental glutenings. I imagine most of us have. If it happens repeatedly you probably ought to think of ways to prevent it from happening. Do you take your lunch to work with you? That is a simple way to make sure you are not getting glutened there. It's up to you to be careful about the diet. Nobody can do it for you.
  22. My lactose intolerance symptoms are D and C and gas. The lactose sugar is not broken down and so the bacteria in the gut multiply rapidly. If you are lactose intolerant you will most lily have some kind of GI tract symptoms.
  23. I don't have kids, but I imagine you just tell them what to do and they do it right? If the diet makes a positive difference in how he feels then he will probably want to stay on it. You might want to test this by putting him on the diet for a few months and then do a gluten challenge. Nothing big, just a slice of gluten bread. If he has a negative...
  24. The core foods should be chosen by each individual to suit their needs. The Quinoa sounds fine if that's your preference. The idea is to have something you can depend on food wise. Then add an item at a time and track your reactions. I suggest eliminating goitrogens first off, they are foods that interfere with your thyroid function. You might want to...
  25. Sounds like it could be hidden gluten getting through in your diet somehow. Do you make your own food? I eat mostly food that I cook at home. I make a couple of rice dishes to have on hand in the freezer. I know that I don't get gluten normally because I make those foods myself, and have verified my reactions to all the items in the food. Anyway, I...
