ARCHIVED Weird Symptom: Tingly Legs?
Terri-Anne replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My gluten-free son also started to complain of tingling/almost-pain in his feet when he was old enough to describe the feeling. At first I suspected they were falling asleep from his position on the chair. But when the problem persisted, and occurred on and off, regardless of position I assumed it had something to do with diet. I contacted my dietician... -
ARCHIVED What Tests To Request (demand?)
Terri-Anne replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you for your responses so far. The one thing that really puzzles me about Logan is that the main real symptom that remains is this crazy-insatiable-hunger. He does pass considerable pungent-smelling gas after supper most nights but that's pretty minor to put up with. What happened to all that roll-on-the-floor tummy pain? The diarrhea? The head... -
ARCHIVED What Tests To Request (demand?)
Terri-Anne posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Everyone. Let me give you a tiny background on our situation. My son (almost seven years old) began having reactions to wheat as soon as it was introduced to his diet at about 9 months old. He had a severely itchy rash that he scratched until he bled and continued scratching, loose very smelly stool, stomach pains that would leave him writhing on the... -
ARCHIVED Coeliac Home Testing Kits
Terri-Anne replied to Debbie65's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is this home test, or another like it available in Canada, or can one be shipped TO Canada? Also, does anyone know how valid/accurate the results are? I'd love to have my children tested inexpensively, without having to jump through hoops to convince my doctor to order the testing. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Start A 6 Year Old On gluten-free Diet?
Terri-Anne replied to aprilh's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son outgrew his "allergy to wheat" a year ago, but we used to buy him Mi-Del brand "oreos" that he liked just fine. And if another child was at the house playing with him, I'd often just hand them BOTH a Mi-Del oreo, and the non-allergic child who is used to eating REAL oreos would never balk or leave their cookie uneaten, so I would predict that your... -
ARCHIVED Is This Another Possible Symptom?
Terri-Anne replied to floridanative's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is 6 years old, tall for his age, and a healthy looking lean, not skinny looking and not chunky looking. He used to have considerable symptoms with wheat ingestion, and was taken off wheat for 3 full years, from around his second birthday until last summer. Celiac tests came back negative, and allergists tests also came back negative. Re-introduced... -
ARCHIVED Vomiting
Terri-Anne replied to betharlene24's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you removed the milk, or more specifically the lactose from your child's diet? I recall my daughter having an average of 10 mucous bm's by noon each day, before we figured out what was causing the diarrhea. Once we removed the milk from her diet, the diarrhea stopped too. We later switched her to the lactose reduced milk which she is able to tolerate... -
ARCHIVED Just Got "the Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread"
Terri-Anne replied to lbsteenwyk's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Does this book have a recipe for light/fluffy hot dog buns, hamburger buns? Some of the ones I buy for Logan, are so heavy and dense, that he usually just leaves them on his plate, eating the meat only. The only thing these heavier buns are decent for is "English-muffin" home made pizzas. I've found one fellow in a tiny local bakery who bakes the... -
ARCHIVED Brown Rice Flour
Terri-Anne replied to loregon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Lorrie, I don't know a certain "brand" of brown rice flour that is less gritty. But I can tell you that I don't use just one lone flour in my baking. I use a mixture of 2 cups rice flour, 2/3 cup potatoe starch(make sure it's potatoe STARCH not flour), and 1/3 cup tapioca flour, which I believe is Bette Hagman's suggested mixture. For each cup of flour... -
ARCHIVED Is Going Wheat-free Enough?
Terri-Anne posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Let me start by describing my 5 year old son's "reactions" to wheat ingestion. Within an hour or so his cheeks, chin and ears flush a scarlet red and are hot to the touch. This happens EVERY time he ingests wheat, no matter how tiny the amount. Sometimes he gets a rash on inner thighs, underside of arms, and on abdomen, depending on the amount of wheat... -
ARCHIVED Hershey's Chocolate
Terri-Anne replied to campcour's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Campcour, I am surprised by the response you received from the Hershey company. I called the Hershey company myself because my son had an allergic reaction one afternoon, and I could not pin down what had caused it. I supspected perhaps the Reese's pieces I had purchased in their box, out of a cafeteria vending machine. The lady on the phone assured... -
ARCHIVED Just Some Questions....
Terri-Anne replied to JacobsMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Brandi, To answer your question, yes, I do give my son a daily multi-vitamin. The wheat free diet can be low on B vitamins, and Logan was having adverse symptoms of a vitamin B deficiency, so we definitely needed to do something about it. In my opinion, washing the gravy off did NOT help. While the intentions were good, the reality is that she... -
Welcome Yitz! When we first deduced that my young son could no longer eat foods with wheat in them, I was totally overwhelmed! When you start reading labels, as your wife will be doing for the rest of her life, it seems wheat is slipped in almost everywhere! I think the best 3 things I did to get a handle on what foods are safe to feed my son are:...

ARCHIVED Under Eye Circles
Terri-Anne replied to ham&ex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Newby, Could you please tell me the source for your information? I'd like to print it and take it to doctor, but from original source if possible. Perhaps that will help convince him to test my son for allergies. Thanks. -
Mrs. Fish, Icould have written your post!!!!!! My son used to get this horrible rash, all over but really concentrated on inner thighs and knees and he'd scratch his knees until he bled, then keep right on scratching! He also had the severe cradle cap that I COULD NOT clear up! It was gross and so bad clumps of hair would fall out! Nothing helped...

ARCHIVED What To Feed 5 Year Old?
Terri-Anne replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you all for your replies! You've given me some great ideas for some nutritious ways to entice Logie to eat. I should have been able to come up with some of those ideas myself, but as a working mom with 4 kids, it's enough of a challenge to decide what to throw together for supper each night, without throwing in the twist of modifying part of the meal... -
ARCHIVED What To Feed 5 Year Old?
Terri-Anne posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi all. Here's my problem. Logan is 5 years old, allergic to wheat, so on a limited diet similar to celiac diet. My husband is a very "meat and potatoes" kind of guy. Every supper meal includes potatoes, some sort of meat that defines the meal, and some veggie on the side. Logan used to have a great appetite! Always ate his whole meal, even seconds... -

Mydaughter often breaks out in a bumpy "rash" on the back of her neck in the hairline. This rash comes and goes. It could be absent for weeks, then suddenly appear, staying for 3 or 4 days, then disappear as suddenly as it came. The rash on her neck does itch. To me it looks more like small pus filled pimples, than little blisters. The contents appear...

ARCHIVED Inhaled Gluten Cause Reaction?
Terri-Anne replied to SofiEmiMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As someone who has worked in a kindergarten for several years, and who is also a mom of a little boy who cannot eat wheat, my opinion is that maybe it's time for that kindergarten class to switch up the traditional Friday cook menu! They could start making things that don't call for flour, like apple sauce, or start using gluten free flour and guar gum.... -
ARCHIVED Would This Be Considered Progress?
Terri-Anne replied to CMWeaver's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Christine, As you really are a relative Newby at providing a gluten-free diet for you children, is it possible you are missing some gluten somewhere that you least expect it? There is so much to learn to maintain a gluten-free lifestyle that I recall that I certainly wasn't fully skilled at a month and a half into it, and even now 2 years later find I... -
ARCHIVED Facial Flushing, Nose Bleeds
Terri-Anne posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am wondering whether anyone has facial flushing, and I mean REALLY red cheeks, chin, ears, lips, when they have a gluten accident? They look severley sun burned, or terribly slapped, and very nearly like they are almost bleeding! My son Logan shows this symptom when he gets wheat by accident, but he supposedly has a histamine type allergy to wheat, not... -
ARCHIVED What If They Won't Eat?
Terri-Anne replied to kentsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Are you sure the things you are offering your son are completely free of gluten? Or is it possible that he may have MORE sensitivities beyond gluten? I know that sometimes I offer/try to give Logan something that I believe to be completely safe for him to eat, but he sometimes refuses the food, and I sometimes find out later that it could possibly have... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Versus Barley
Terri-Anne replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for your reply Tiffany, I never thought of cooking the barley straight as a side dish, like rice. Good idea. At least I have an idea where to start, if I decided to try to gluten load him. Do you think that would be sufficient?
