  1. Sorry, one final thing. I know that it's hard to be strict with them, but I have a cat that often doesn't "feel like eating" when I put her food out and obviously you can't leave wet food out for more than 15 minutes. So if she refuses to eat it, i put it back in the fridge, covered, and she has to wait until it's next convenient for me. Believe me, they...
  2. I know that switching to canned can be difficult for some cats, but I think it would be worth all of the effort. Cats that don't eat dry food do not get diabetes - it is only the result of a dry food diet, so if that's what you're worried about, he will not get the disease if you make the switch. The normal diet for a cat is a mouse, which is made up of...
  3. I agree with most everything that's been said, except I would add that cats should NEVER have dry food - not only should they not have wheat, but they should not have carbs in general. Cats are strict carnivores and only thrive on canned food (or raw food, of course). Dry food is so processed and is full of carbs that cats do not know how to process. The...
  4. Thanks, Lynayah. This is very helpful. I think I will do as you do, looking for the GIG label and asking about the ppm in future! I usually avoid processed food too, as it often ends in disaster (and I have to throw out expensive products...)
  5. You're completely right, Kim - a lot of restaurants do have those options now, even Italian ones. I checked that out and this one doesn't, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion though.
  6. Thanks to everyone for your kind and helpful responses. It's nice to hear from people who understand where I'm coming from. The health code problem is also one I hadn't considered and, in the future, for an event which means more to me, with people I know and trust, I may at least call the restaurant and see if they can plate my food for me - it's an interesting...
  7. hmm...that's an interesting idea - thanks! Have you or anyone else ever done that before? I don't know how receptive the restaurant would be, but it's definitely something I hadn't considered.
  8. That makes sense since I don't like bananas that are not ripe (I always avoid them if they have ANY green). Thanks for explaining that. Yes, please don't lose hope. As frustrating as it can be to find out there's a new thing we can't have, I have definitely been able to reintegrate things that I thought were gone for good. Sugar overload seems to be a common...
  9. Thanks for your reply. I could and I would, but then I would still sit in the restaurant with no food in front of me while everyone eats. I have endured a lot of uncomfortable and unenjoyable situations like this, but it's not worth it to me anymore. Thanks, though, for the suggestion.
  10. I don't usually have to experience people being insensitive about Celiac in eating situations because I only eat out at places I know are safe and with people I know and trust AND my job is not one that requires that I eat at restaurants. However, there is a kind of work "field trip" coming up that is completely voluntary and not essential to our work in...
  11. I know how frustrating that is. The same thing happened to me not long after I went gluten free a few years ago. I couldn't eat ANY fruit or any sugar in any form. However, after I completely cut out sugar and fructose for close to a year, I began to be able to eat bananas (don't know why bananas didn't affect me as much) and as my gut healed (I guess), I...
  12. I don't have a problem with garlic, but I have a huge problem with onions (raw especially, but cooked also). However, I can eat cooked shallots. I put cooked shallots in many of the dishes I cook and they rarely bother me - they are a milder member of the onion family. I don't know if leeks are considered mild or not, but they started giving me a problem...
  13. I am really glad I stumbled upon this thread. I too have been freaking out because my teeth are cracking and I'm losing enamel from them as well. I had no idea it was related to Celiac, but it makes sense. Also, I'm a vegetarian, who has a problem digesting milk AND leafy greens when not pulverized in the blender, so I'm sure I'm extremely low on calcium...
  14. I was having a problem with Heinz and even Whole Foods brands - not because of gluten, but because of the sugar/high fructose corn syrup. I recently found Organic Ville ketchup, which uses agave as a sweetener and I feel fine with that. I have found it in Whole Foods and Wegman's. It might be worth giving it a try...
  15. When I'm not doing too well, I have to avoid vinegar, including ketchup (there is also a bit of sugar in that, though I have recently found a kind that uses agave instead and it's probably pretty easy to make at home anyway). Because of the responses that people gave here, I finally tried probiotics. I haven't taken the capsules yet, but I stumbled on to...
  16. I bought probiotics, but haven't started taking them yet. I know it's dumb, but I'm afraid to put anything new in my body even if I think it might help - because I've had so many problems with things I ingest. I did make sure the ones I bought were dairy-, soy-, and gluten-free, so I will just take the plunge and try - thanks for your hopeful words. I avoid...
  17. Thanks, Gfp, that does make sense as a possibility and thanks for your knowledge. I guess I have very little faith in doctors after they couldn't diagnose me for 7 years, but maybe it's time to ask around for a good one, give it another try, and see if I can figure that out. I suppose it could be something like a parasite (yuck) and I have thought lately...
  18. I am self-diagnosed Celiac since March of 2007 (doctors couldn't figure it out, so I finally did); I have learned a lot from this forum, but this is the first time I'm posting (and maybe I should have started a new subject instead of continuing on Jason's thread, but I have a similar situation so I hope that's ok...). As soon as I cut out gluten a couple...
  19. Thanks for the reply. Three months! Argghhh! That sounds awful. From CC, too. This is definitely a difficult condition to cope with. You get sick if you cheat, obviously, but the most frustrating is when you're doing your best to be good. It really has turned into a part-time job for me: reading labels, etc.
  20. Thank you so much for the advice. I suppose, since you suggested it, that Gatorade doesn't have any hidden gluten. I never thought of that, but will try it. I will also try acidopholous pills. It does make sense to me that I'm less used to gluten now so that the immune system has no idea how to handle it. I appreciate the kind words.
  21. Thanks for your responses, little d and Donna - I appreciate them. It's a real learning curve and I'm glad I have such nice people to learn with. Just as a side note, I have lost 15 to 20 pounds since I stopped eating gluten (that's in only 10 months). I also have had to eliminate dairy because I had ignored the gluten problem long enough that I couldn't...
  22. Hi, I'm new to this forum. I've been reading it for a few months, but have never posted. I'm hoping someone can help me understand what's going on with a very slow recovery I've been going through. I am self-diagnosed Celiac for about 10 months now. None of the doctors even mentioned the possibility of Celiac or gluten intolerance when I had no idea what...
