ARCHIVED Rum Which Ones Are Gf?
tom replied to whitelacegal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The crowd that avoids distilled products w/ a grain source would say to stay away from dark rums, as they have add'l ingred to make them dark and could contain grain alcohol to maintain alcohol content. (80 proof or whatever) Of course, most celiacs don't seem to have trouble w/ distilled products, but i thought it was worth a mention. -
ARCHIVED Milk Contains Gluten!
tom replied to CMWeaver's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
When margarine is a problem for a celiac, it's most likely due to the lactose or the casein. (in whey) Only a couple brands of marg contain neither. The one in my local stores is called Nucoa. Casein problems are also very common for celiacs. I'd recommend trying Nucoa to anyone who might think they have an issue w/ margarine. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Appropriate Diagnostic Methods
tom replied to gardinersara's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False negatives on the bloodtest happen ALL the time. For celiacs w/ only "partial atrophy" of the villi, one study showed 2/3 of them tested negative. Even celiacs w/ TOTAL villous atrophy had a false negative bloodtest in 23% of cases. https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1023 -

ARCHIVED Heineken International Updated Again...fyi
tom replied to Sterndogg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do we really think the US has no standard ? I think 0ppm is the standard in the US. If it says gluten-free in the US, the only way it may have any gluten is thru contamination, same processing equip etc. Personally i detest the notion that a product can be called gluten-free while its manufacturer is actually certain that some gluten is in the product... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free A Restaurant Cook's Perspective
tom replied to ConcernedCook's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There are a few problems w/ this theory. 1) Celiacs react to gliadin, not the gluten itself. (of course the gliadin is a component of wheat gluten) 2) It's a bit misleading to say it "breaks down any gluten that is hidden in food", since the enzymes you're referring to act on any gluten, regardless of how apparent its existence is. With so many valid... -
I visited my sister in Portland over thxgvg and having heard of Corbett Fish House, was so excited we went straight there from the airport ! Also, anyone from the midwest will recognize the perch. (The owners are from Wisc.) mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Highly recommended.

ARCHIVED Milk Duds
tom replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Very good list indeed. I've tried to buy more from the companies that list allergens whenever given a choice. But i was pretty dismayed a few wks ago when i found a Kraft product w/ an obvious gluten source and no allergen warning on the pkg. It was Louis Rich brand pre-cooked seasoned chickenstrips. I took a picture w/ my Palm but it didn't come out clear... -
Oh and for mela14 Open Original Shared Link He's at the U of Maryland.

The pill they're researching at Stanford is only for gliadin and has only been tested on rats. I'm not gonna hold my breath.

ARCHIVED Feeling Frustrated - New Symptoms
tom replied to CycleFitness's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've been gluten-free 11 months and also spend a lot of time sitting at a computer. I've had some bad days during that time but never had a reason to think that extended pc use and associated slouched body position was a factor. For one, my pc usage was no different on all the good days/weeks. I'd expect others will agree that while slouching at a pc may... -

ARCHIVED Blood Tests
tom replied to AMYGOS5970's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ahh so now untreated celiac is comparable to an untreated paper cut. I certainly never claimed celiac is as bad as any terminal disease. I never attempted to belittle your or anyone else's symptoms, from celiac or any other affliction. In other recent posts, you (tarnalberry) called yourself gluten-intolerant and i take that to mean you hadn't had the... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests
tom replied to AMYGOS5970's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Then again tarnalberry, you've posted that you think you don't HAVE the disease, but rather, are gluten-intolerant. AMYGOS5970 will certainly prove you wrong if she (or he, i see Amy) does have celiac disease and does not start gluten-free until too late. How dare you say such a thing here tarnalberry. Of the myriad of my symptoms, there were... -
ARCHIVED Sharp Pains
tom replied to tammy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can have some of that but it's rarely more than 30-40 sec for me. I've been gluten-free 11 mos and while it's less often it's still certainly every week. I expect, hopefully, it'll get less frequent. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Positive, Andoscopy Next Please Help
tom replied to charlotte-cat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ahhh never mind, found PLENTY. hehehe Didn't know that the latest was that as high as 5% of celiacs don't have DQ2 or DQ8. My apologies. I thought it was far lower. I'll never back off the assertion that our thread-creator should start gluten-free asap. The blood work is done. Still haven't heard of a doc scheduling biopsies 3 wks apart. -

Do either of you have a link handy pointing to proven celiacs w/out DQ2 or DQ8 ? -
ARCHIVED Gluten-like Symptoms With Rice?
tom replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Lately i've found i can get like that from the sugar in a piece of cake. Or a candy bar. Heck even the sugar i used to put in coffee. I'm Splenda for coffee now. I'd never thought of sugar as a problem for me before. I hope w/ enough villi repair i can feel confident about having gluten-free cake before long. -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac Disease?
tom replied to Mommyto2too's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ya that was the point. It's not a symptom i've seen mentioned here. I'm sure it was the beginning of my intestinal damage / villous atrophy. I can't even describe how painful it is, tho she called it worse than childbirth and it appears she's been thru childbirth twice. The other point was that it could be years before the more common symptoms develop... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Positive, Andoscopy Next Please Help
tom replied to charlotte-cat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I never meant to imply to not get a scope. My position is that she's already said gluten incapacitates her, and under these circumstances it's not necessary to continue daily "bouts of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain etc" for an endoscopy. I'd be willing to bet that of the people in line ahead of her, those who are already gluten-free would even gladly... -
ARCHIVED The Fog Has Lifted
tom replied to Iheartbostons's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes very possible. While i was eating a salad whose bacon pieces turned out to have sprinkling of wheat to prevent them sticking together, i knew i made a mistake before it was half-finished. So it was 10-15 minutes (not a fast eater) for me to start being sick from small amount of gluten. And of course, oats are off-limits for celiacs due to near constant... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac Disease?
tom replied to Mommyto2too's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
13-14 yrs ago i started having what Mommyto2too describes. I now am positive it was the first of my adult celiac symptoms. It was somewhat rare and certainly unpredictable, happening once every 1-6 months, i'd guess. It was probably another 5 yrs before the next symptom (occassional diarhhea) came along. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Positive, Andoscopy Next Please Help
tom replied to charlotte-cat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whoa - charlotte_cat says " I have been ill with bouts of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain etc since the summer" and "eating some gluten ... ...is very difficult...I become completely incopasitiated when I do." (forgive the paraphrasing plz) And given the above, are you two (tarnalberry & lovegrov) saying that if she ALSO has the genes for celiac... -

tom replied to charlotte-cat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
And ANOTHER thing . .. .. if it's all that important, why couldn't he squeeze you in for an endoscopy on the 10th ? I'd guess most of the others ahead of you are already gluten-free. -

Again, the doctor does not always know what is best for you. I think the esteemed stanford emiritus doc who recommended I eat half a slice of bread/day for a month would have to admit to violating the Hippocratic Oath if he REALLY knew what it would do to me, and how it would feel every day. I'll look it up in a minute, but isn't a crucial part of that...
