ARCHIVED Testing--& Gluten In Diet
tom replied to raso's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think that's enough gluten right there to say you haven't started a gluten-free diet, making talk of what duration for a gluten challenge moot. Btw, that UofChi 12 wks quote sure seems overused considering that Mayo, Stanford, Beth-Israel, UofMaryland etc all say fewer weeks. -

And the ceremonial horns could get use in the upcoming inauguration ceremonies. I'm bucking the trend of Royal Reluctance & planning to be next King. -

Awesome Rach! I think we can get a whole chorus of horn-tootin' w/ ya for a post-call laugh. I call the long Ricola horn! Or .. ..(gah! Indecision!) the not-too-long-to-hold-straight ceremonial horn w/ that banner/flag hanging from it, cuz I bet those come w/ a cool hat. -

Are we reading the same story? The Dr who said the blood/antibodies test will work fine despite 4 yrs gluten-free? That's an ignorant Dr. -

ARCHIVED Blood Test: What Can I Do To Increase Its Accuracy?
tom replied to jwblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
D'oh!! My posts would apply to ppl re-introducing gluten. You can/should test immediately if you've never been gluten-free. And no, hehe, not everything contains gluten, but it does take effort to be 100% gluten-free, compared to just "no obvious wheat/gluten". -
ARCHIVED Blood Test: What Can I Do To Increase Its Accuracy?
tom replied to jwblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Those recs would've been much more common 10 yrs ago than today. In 2004, Stanford was already saying just 1/2 slice for 30 days & UofChi is currently saying a single cracker is enough. There are studies that explored dosage qty & what I've seen was 2 for 2 on recommending lightest dose, which was ~1/2 slice. IH may again voice displeasure at... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test: What Can I Do To Increase Its Accuracy?
tom replied to jwblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do you mean 'any *other* foods'? Then, no. First off, you'll want to verify that a full celiac panel is being done. It's incredible how often people here tell of their Dr running just one or two celiac tests smh. Once the full panel is in use, the uncertainty of proper/adequate gluten-challenge duration rears its ugly head. Some people get... -

Oh jeez more about "the toe job"? -
Hi Chloe & welcome to the forum. Couple questions: Was the shoulder pain something that used to happen before gluten-free? Is the abdominal pain similar to anything pre-gluten-free? Where you say 'sticking w/ the diet my hardest', does that mean some inevitable cross-contam from eating out or more like occasionally having a little something w...

For anyone who IS an actual celiac (regardless of what limited/insufficient testing says) this is horrible terrible horrendous malpractice-level bad advice. -

I should've commented sooner, but was failing to remember whatever I thought I'd heard and when & I think the last I heard was Metta had gotten very ill ~ 2 yrs ago? I'm embarrassed that I don't remember better. That day, after lunch, everyone else had places to be (incl 3 or 4 gluten eaters not pictured but who all complimented the gluten-free crust... -

ARCHIVED Hi! I've Been Watching From Afar.....
tom replied to Bethanne's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Bethanne, I was exactly there until I finally tested soy-free for 2 full weeks instead of the previous 3-4 day elimination tests. Around day 10 I started thinking I might really be onto something, and it ended up making a HUGE difference - I felt reawakened to enjoying life. BUT . ...if I'd done just a 1 wk trial, I never would've known. (Well... -
ARCHIVED Wow! This Article Scares Me About Gfd... Anyone Else!
tom replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I see it as mostly scaremongering w/ incomplete data/anecdotes. Sure, some of us have to stop eating some foods besides just gluten to feel better, but that doesn't mean that the typical celiac is doomed like the picture painted in that article. -

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free 4 Yrs, Contradictory Test Results
tom replied to rehh05's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Also, it's a little goofy for him to be turning to the murky world of celiac genetics when you have villous atrophy AND a positive response to gluten-free. Imho, every good GI would dx you on these, unless they have some other explanation for the villous atrophy. Just shaking my head at that Dr's failed attempt at the blood test & warped view of the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free 4 Yrs, Contradictory Test Results
tom replied to rehh05's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
AAAAARGH! That's SO ridiculous he must have almost no experience w/ celiac patients. The antibody tests need the gluten. (He might really think that 'in theory' the antibody tests are affected, but that no one's gluten-free so it doesn't matter? Either way a horrible point of view for a practicing GI. "Unless working closely w/ a nutritionist" makes him... -

Reminds me of the jokes that end w/ Then Timmy says to his teacher "But I like the way you think" -
I may never stop being amazed at how often situations of this nature occur. Some Drs even seem to flat out refuse to believe that the gluten-free correlation really is causation. As long as those particular confounded ear Drs ended up accepting that gluten was the issue, it's hard to really blame them - being products of a system of specialized education...
