Help with genetic testing
Scott Adams replied to Kirita's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The genetic testing results you provided indicate that your child carries two copies of the HLA-DQ2.5 beta chain (DQ Beta 1 *02:01, *02:01), which is a high-risk genetic marker for celiac disease. However, the alpha chain (DQ Alpha 1 *05:01, *05) is only partially present, as HLA-DQ2.5 typically requires the alpha chain *05:01 paired with the beta chain ... -
New to gluten-free
Scott Adams replied to QueenBorg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day: -
Living or working in environments where gluten exposure is a constant risk can be incredibly challenging, especially when neurological symptoms are involved. For those with celiac disease or severe gluten-related disorders, airborne gluten (like flour dust in kitchens or shared workspaces) can trigger indirect exposure through inhalation or cross-contact...

Refractory celiac disease
Scott Adams replied to Grahamsnaturalworld's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It’s incredibly frustrating when specialists don’t grasp the urgency of worsening symptoms, especially when neurological involvement is at play. For refractory celiac disease (RCD) diagnosis in Adelaide, your best bet is to seek out a gastroenterologist with specific expertise in complex celiac cases. Consider reaching out to: The Royal Adelaide Hos... -
Diagnosis confusion
Scott Adams replied to Hummer01's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your blood test was not negative (TTG-IgA result - 4 where <4 negative), but looks borderline if above 4 is positive or weak positive, but you can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not very common: Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response... -
New to gluten-free
Scott Adams replied to QueenBorg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome to the gluten-free lifestyle! It’s great to hear that eliminating gluten has already helped with your fibromyalgia symptoms—that’s a huge win in just three weeks. Mistakes happen (especially when traveling!), so don’t be too hard on yourself. Each slip-up is a learning experience. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is ... -
If you're looking for a gluten-free stool softener for post-surgery use, Docusate Sodium (Colace) is a widely recommended option, and many of its formulations are gluten-free. The Colace Clear Gel Liquid version is often considered safe for celiac patients, but since labeling practices vary, it’s best to verify with the manufacturer (some pharmacies can a...

GliadinX/Tolerase G
Scott Adams replied to Fenrir's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sorry to hear that you got glutened! Thanks for sharing, and I hope the GliadinX saved you more misery with some of your other meals. -
If possible find quinoa with a gluten-free label--when grown in Peru or Ecuador it is far less likely to have wheat contamination. Canada increasingly is producing more quinoa, and when grown there it the likelihood of wheat contamination is higher.

Diagnosis confusion
Scott Adams replied to Hummer01's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think @trents may be correct here, and you've caught celiac disease in its early stages. A gluten-free diet might be the safest approach. -
Your family’s story is both inspiring and ahead of its time! Making your home completely gluten-free in 1978—when awareness and labeling were so limited—was a radical act of love and protection for your son. The fact that your husband, a foodie, fully supported this decision speaks volumes about your family’s dedication. It’s remarkable how that choi...

Allergy Testing
Scott Adams replied to ARutherford's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since gluten sensitivity or celiac disease could be a factor (alongside other potential allergens like dairy, eggs, or environmental triggers), getting proper testing is key. In Christchurch, you could start with a pediatrician or GP who can refer you to an allergist/immunologist or a pediatric gastroenterologist (if celiac is suspected). For allergy testing... -
Question about biopsy
Scott Adams replied to somethinglikeolivia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your experience highlights a common frustration in celiac disease diagnosis—discrepancies between lab results, biopsy findings, and clinical symptoms. The "localized mild nodular mucosa" noted in your duodenal bulb could indeed be significant, even if the overall pathology was deemed negative. Nodularity in the duodenum is often associated with lymphocytic i... -
