  1. Wow Krista! When I read your story, it broke my heart! What a nightmare your family has been through! I also am on two different anti-depressants and have been treated for depression for so long. I truly believe it is due to the celiac disease also. I am currently starting from scratch and working my way up again because of continued permanent...
  2. I could sure use some recipes, also!!!!! There are some pretty good recipes in www.delphiforums.com, click "Health & Wellness" and the second one down is "Celiac". They have a gluten-free recipes section in there that is quite extensive..... Karen
  3. Also, make sure you get your thyroid checked. Hair loss is a symptom of hypothyroidism. And hypothyroidism is a common thing with celiac disease. Don't worry, though.... Mine falls out in clumps when I am untangling it in the shower. What I have learned to do is rinse the shampoo out but not worry about the tangly part. I then put a Got2B conditioner...
  4. I use this all the time for cleaning my house - it works so well - I just can't seem to find any info as to whether it is gluten-free or not..... Anyone know? If not, I guess I just will be using cleaning gloves.... Thanks! Karen
  5. Hi! Thanks for all the suggestions! I have found Fleishmann's Lactose Free Margarine which is also gluten-free. And Smuckers Jam with No Sugar Added (also gluten-free)..... At least I have something for my gluten-free toast and muffins!! Karen
  6. Hi Smith, Thank you so much for the suggestion of Crystal Light. I purchased it and it tastes very good!!! I can even make my slushies out of it (I have a slushy machine because I just LOVE them - I usually used Kool-Aid with it but now I can use the Crystal Light instead)..... Thanks for the suggestion! Karen
  7. Also, I know for sure that Pepto Bismol is gluten-free. I find that helps me..... Karen
  8. Hi Burdee, Those are excellent suggestions. I know what you mean about being able to push out the gas. When I am at work, after lunch, I sneak into the boardroom, lay down on the floor, first on my right side for a few minutes, then my left side for a few minutes, then on my stomach for a few minutes and then on by back for a few minutes. I can literally...
  9. Let's hope removing this from our systems will improve both of us!! Have a great day! Karen
  10. It's wonderful to read up on everyone here!! Susette, welcome! Your post in particular caught my eye regarding "stereotyping" celiacs. What delayed the diagnosis for me I think is the fact that I don't "fit the bill" for a celiac either. Although I am of Irish descent, one of the characteristics of celiac disease is short stature, well, I'm 5'9". Not...
  11. That sounds delicious!!!! Congratulations!!! Making me hungry for some....lol! I have to admit you are much more ahead than I am. I haven't attempted any gluten-free baking yet - I am still at the stage of purchasing my gluten-free bread and my gfcarrot muffins at the health food store. By the time I get home from work, feed the kids (4 of them!!)...
  12. I thought for sure that I had seen Gas-x on a previous list somewhere that it was okay - then I saw a list that said the chewable tablets were not gluten free but the softgels were. So I decided to call the company. Turns out neither one of them are safe.... What I find hard to believe is how can a company that makes a product that will be sooooo inviting...
  13. Hi celiac3270: I have found some mega acidophillis (sp?) that is lactose free, from Natural Source. I like it in powder form, it actually tastes pretty good. I just wash it down with water.... I hope this is the answer for you - it certainly sounds like it from the articles.... I think it will help both you and I.... This is my second day going...
  14. Definitely sounds like silent celiac to me..... You still have it, whether or not you are symptom free. Damage is still being done every time you ingest gluten. Karen
  15. I am realizing just how much more limited my choices are now.... I am trying to find a margarine I can put on my gluten-free toast in the morning. A lot of the choices listed on forum lists don't seem to be available in Canada. I have found Fleishmann's Lactose Free Margarine. I called and the company said they would clearly state if any gluten ingredients...
  16. Hi celiac3270: I already found your article I believe you are talking about.... I mentions almost everything, most things I wouldn't have even thought of, i.e. keyboard, mouse, telephone etc. (I have the list at my work, I printed it off today). All of them are excellent suggestions..... You are a wealth of info! Karen
  17. Gas-X Chewable Tablets!!!!!!! I eat those things like candy because of the severe intestinal gas and bloating that I have...... I have just confirmed with their 1-888 number that both the Chewable Tablets and the Softgels have gluten containing starch in them!!!!! I have been giving myself a steady dose all along!! I still am starting from scratch...
  18. 32954.1 from: St-Johns Listserv: "High prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in celiac patients with persistence of gastrointestinal symptoms after gluten withdrawal. Tursi A, Brandimarte G, Giorgetti G. Department of Emergency, "L. Bonomo" Hospital, Andria (BA), Italy. OBJECTIVE: Celiac disease is a gluten-sensitive enteropathy...
  19. I am starting totally from scratch. Somehow, gluten is getting into my system. I have to prove the refractory celiac disease diagnosis is wrong. I know Aim toothpaste is okay. All my meds are okay. what I need are: gluten-free hand soap gluten-free shampoo gluten-free conditioner gluten-free hairspray gluten-free soap for shower gluten-free...
  20. What you need to do is print off some articles about Refractory Celiac Disease and show them to Neil's family. Maybe then it might sink in just how serious this disease can be. They have to understand that it is not just an "allergy", gluten is actually "toxic" to a celiac's system. If they realize the importance of strict adherence, they probably would...
  21. Most of the things you listed, I don't eat anyway because they bother my system too much. But I do drink about 4 large cups of tea a day. I wonder if that is enough caffeine to bother my system? Also, I was putting 2 heaps of sugar in each cup, coupled with the Kool-Aid that I drink, maybe I am stimulating my system too much with sugar...... But now that...
  22. Burdee, Did your casein symptoms include a burning/nawing feeling? Also, did it include a pain and burning feeling in the centre of your back, just below your shoulder blades? Sometimes it hurts to even just touch my back in that area..... Or maybe it could just be from the 1000 times a day that I belch from the gas..... Thanks! Karen
  23. Hi Burdee, I am really starting to think more seriously about this casein thing. The reason I think it may be a strong possibility is the fact that I am a total milk freak! Even during childhood, Mom alway joked that she needed to buy a cow, I drank so much of the stuff....... Even until just recently, I drank probably 2 - 3 bags of milk myself per...
  24. I should have mentioned that I am now 41 years old. It has been many, many years of this disease going unchecked. Karen
  25. celiac3270, you are nothing short of wonderful, do you know that? You have done wonders in soothing my fears. I am terribly scared at this point though. See, I have had symptoms since my early 20's, it was diagnosed as celiac disease back then, then after a year on the diet, with no change, the diagnosis was changed to Crohn's. My symptoms have never...
