ARCHIVED New Celiac-overwhelmed
Canadian Karen replied to JessicaL's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jessica! Yes, you do get into a groove with this diet. Believe it or not, this diet will become so natural to you that you won't even remember what life was like before going gluten-free! If your pots and pans are steel, I would think that would be okay. I have heard that teflon and iron skillets absorb gluten though and if you have these, should... -
ARCHIVED New Celiac-overwhelmed
Canadian Karen replied to JessicaL's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jessica! Welcome to the board! Yes, it can take some time before you start to see the results of the gluten-free diet. Some people notice a positive change after a few days, others take months to start to feel better. It depends not only on the amount of damage done to your system that needs to be repaired, but also how vigilant you are. Have you... -
Mine is very similar also. It is almost as if I am having an out-of-body experience, the feeling like I am just "not there". When I am having a brain fog, it is impossible to shake off, I have zero energy, totally can't concentrate, feel exhausted and I also have difficulty driving. I have literally more than once actually slapped my face to try to shake...

ARCHIVED Let's Talk About Poop For A Minute.
Canadian Karen replied to frenchiemama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Jenvan, You would be amazed how well it works (Prep H). When I have really bad bags under my eyes, I put the Preparation H Cooling Gel on my eyes the night before and "Presto"!!!, next morning, they have gone down considerably........ I kid you not! It is a well kept secret in the modelling world - almost all models use that trick...... Karen -
ARCHIVED New Here And Very Worried
Canadian Karen replied to Caroline's mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think at the very least it is gluten intolerance. I would seriously consider the gluten-free diet to see if there is a positive dietary change. Also, have you had her thyroid checked? If it is financially feasible, perhaps go through the Enterolab testing. I have heard wonderful things about Enterolab. Good Luck! Karen -

Canadian Karen replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is an excerpt in the candy section that gives a good example: M&M's (800.551.0702) (vp=09/24/02) The following are gluten-free: Snickers (except mini's in Canada); Skittles; Starburst; Dove (milk & dark choc); Mars Almond Bar; 3Musketeers; MilkyWay Midnight (all other MilkyWay's are not gluten-free). All mini versions of the above are gluten... -

Quite often the list will differentiate between U.S. and Canada. e.g. it will say (but not gluten-free in Canada). An example would be Smarties..... Karen -
ARCHIVED Delfi Forum Gf Pro. List
Canadian Karen replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Lisa! Because of the fluctuating nature of the gluten free status of items, it really isn't recommended or worthwhile to publish a gluten free list that basically will be unreliable by the next month. What is gluten free this month may not be gluten free next month. The delphi list is the best resource for up to date and current/correct information... -

ARCHIVED Let's Talk About Poop For A Minute.
Canadian Karen replied to frenchiemama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh yep, you just described me to a tee...... From the time the urge starts, I have at most 10 seconds to make it to the can or else...... Also, my collagenous colitis is quite nocturnal and wakes me up around 2 a.m. and I am up going constantly until around 6 a.m. until it settles down then I usually doze on the couch till the kids get up...... Hi Laura! Welcome to the board! My celiac never involved DH so I can't help you with those questions, but I wanted to make sure you had your thyroid checked. Dry skin, patches on scalp, hair loss, etc. all are symptoms of thyroid disease also. Karen

ARCHIVED Dry Skin
Canadian Karen replied to swittenauer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have dry skin also. My vulnerable spots seem to be on my hands inbetween the fingers (at the top where you rings are) and my scalp. I have tried everything under the sun to control it but haven't found anything yet that can take the place of what used to work (Aveeno with Oatmeal was the ONLY thing that controlled it sufficiently, ironic, eh?) I of course... -
ARCHIVED Is Tiredness And Lack Of Energy Part Of Cd
Canadian Karen replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's hard to say...... It could be that his system is still trying to heal and he still has malabsorption issues. Does he take vitamin supplements? Additional iron? Has he shown to be anemic? My other train of thought could be that it is just his age. The reason I say that is because my daughter who is also 11 (12 next month), who does not have... -

ARCHIVED Hi All, I'm New Here.
Canadian Karen replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Goes to show you how much doctors understand the damage gluten can do to the human body. Oh, on this forum, IBS stands for "I'm basically stumped".....that's what the doctor diagnoses when he can't figure out what is wrong with us!!! lol!!! -

Hi Lori! Welcome to the board!!! I am also from Canada (hence my handle!! ) I am in Ontario, in the Durham region, just outside of Toronto. Just wanted to let you know that there is no such thing as a stupid question on this board. We have all been there and know how overwhelming it can be at the beginning. Just post away and there's a bunch...
