Which Carnival ship did you sail on? I've found lots of variation within a line but things seem to be constantly improving.

ARCHIVED Thumbs Up For Disney World!
moving on replied to pajamama2's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Mamaw, if you are staying at Ft Wilderness, you might want to try the Hoop Dee Do review. The show was good but the gluten-free food was wonderful. The chef said they are trying to adjust as many recipes as possible to be naturally gluten-free. I ordered several weeks in advance and had much more food than I could eat. The best part - it was very good... -
ARCHIVED Food On A Long Plane Flight
moving on replied to eleep's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I flew just a couple of weeks after these new restrictions went into effect. I had packed 4 = 3oz cans of tuna and chicken on my carry on luggage. I was pulled aside while my luggage was searched. Since the tuna was water packed I was told it should be in the 2 quart plastic bag. The next time I flew, I put a 4 oz container of pudding in the plastic bag... -
ARCHIVED "special" Circumstances
moving on replied to clbevilacqua's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've just returned from a trip and carried 3 - 3 ounce cans of tuna or chicken. I had them in my carry on luggage and was allowed to keep them. I was told that since they contained water they should be put in the 1 quart ziplock bag along with other items. The cans should not be larger than the 3 oz size and all liquids and gels should fit in one ziploc... -
ARCHIVED Harrah's Cherokee, Nc
moving on replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The restaurant in Asheville was LaPaz on Biltmore Square. We went after the lunch rush and the manager was very kind. They fixed fahitas without the soy sauce they use and with corn tortillas. They also brought warm corn tortillas with my own sauce to enjoy before my meal. We had hoped to enjoy lunch at the restaurant on the Biltmore grounds but it requires... -
ARCHIVED Harrah's Cherokee, Nc
moving on replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The Wendy's is in town and usually very busy. I would try to hit it on the off hours. The same goes for the buffet - in fact, lunch prices are much less so it is possible to eat a very late lunch or early dinner. I've never asked for gluten free at the buffet but just try to use common sense. Many of those staffing the buffet are from Europe and there... -
ARCHIVED Harrah's Cherokee, Nc
moving on replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
We visit Harrah's every 3 to 4 months. Eating out is not the easiest thing to do there but we do manage. If we have free rooms, we stay at Harrah's. When this is the case, I take cereal or muffins and have breakfast in the room. They do have small refrigerators in the room and DH goes down to the coffee place and gets a cinnamon bun. If we stay at the... -

ARCHIVED Butterscotch Chips Help?
moving on replied to Laura's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you have Kroger's nearby, their store brand of butterscotch chips are gluten free. -
I like the sorghum and/or bean mixtures much better than those blended with rice flours. I simply replace the flour with a sorghum blend and 1/2 tsp zanthan gum per cup for my Toll House cookies. Bob's Red Mill has a flour blend that can be used but it contains fava beans and I am not able to eat them.

ARCHIVED Bard's Beer
moving on replied to Diosa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had conflicting information from the company itself concerning refrigeration. Most NC liquor stores are selling it off the shelf. My pantry is 75 degrees, not excessively warm, with an air conditioning vent. -
ARCHIVED Bard's Beer
moving on replied to Diosa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wrote concerning the foaming when I purchased my first case. I did send pictures. I had a phone call from one of the owners and an email from the other. No refund, no replacements, nothing. They claim it was mishandled by the distributor. I opened a warm bottle on Easter to use in a basting sauce and it spewed to the ceiling. I like the beer but... -
ARCHIVED Bard's Beer
moving on replied to Diosa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm afraid the bad batch has been a problem all along. I really want to see them succeed but I just had a bottle explode in the pantry and send glass all over. My mother had one explode about two weeks ago. I really don't want to give up my beer but this could be dangerous. -
ARCHIVED Bard's Beer
moving on replied to Diosa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Your comments about them going out of business gave me a scare! I called the location in SC where I purchase my beer and they still carry it. My outing for Bard's Tale is 300 miles or 6 hours so I do buy a case or two at a time. Since I do not drink it every day, it does last a bit. With the increase in gas prices, it has certainly made the trip more... -
ARCHIVED Carnival Cruises--accomodating To Celiacs?
moving on replied to augie's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Yes, you place your bread, bagel or whatever in the bag and place the bag in the toaster. It usually takes 2 cycles to brown nicely. Toasters with wider slots are of course easier to use. The toasters with the moving tray also work. You always need to be careful picking them up since they are very hot. I have had some burns on the bag but they remain... -
ARCHIVED Going On A Cruise Saturday!
moving on replied to LqrMan's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Thank you for taking time to reply. The 90 day issue is probably the reason I have not requested gluten-free diet. We have cruised with HAL 6 times and hope to make it 7 this winter. We are retired and usually book last minute so that is somewhat limiting for requesting a special diet. If we book 60 days out this time, I will try a special request. I... -
ARCHIVED Going On A Cruise Saturday!
moving on replied to LqrMan's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Terri, did you need to eat in the dining room each meal or were you free to use the buffett? Did you have to chose all 3 meals the day before? We are considering a HAL cruise in January. I wouldn't be able to consume many baked items but an English muffin some mornings and something sweet at tea would be nice. We would be able to drive to the port... -
ARCHIVED Gf Cookbooks
moving on replied to discouragedmomof5's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sharon, Try Carol Fenster for sorghum flour recipes. One of her flour mixtures consist of sorghum, corn or bean (I use bean), tapioca starch and potato flour. I really like the texture of the bread, not as heavy and dense as those that use rice flour. -
ARCHIVED Help With Italian Cooking!
moving on replied to mannybspizza's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use the Tinkyada giant shells. After cooking and filling them, I freeze them on a tray. I have read gluten-free pasta is not good in salads since it gets hard. I love having almost cooked meals in the freezer since eating out has become more difficult. Wish you were closer - 800 miles is a bit of a trip for dinner. I know I should have never relocated... -
Thank you for sharing your experience. It wouldn't be a big problem to carry a few things with me and leave me time to sightsee while on the West Coast.

ARCHIVED Carnival Cruises--accomodating To Celiacs?
moving on replied to augie's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Killern, did you request permission prior to sailing to carry your beer? We are sailing from San Diego in October and would not carry it on the airlines but do cruise frequently from ports we can drive to. You said they toasted your bagels, did you carry the toaster bags or did they have a seperate toaster? I would be afraid of cross contamination... -
Does anyone know of a place to purchase gluten-free cereal, pretzels, snack bars and cookies? We will be arriving 1 day prior to sailing and if possible, would rather not carry these items with me on my flight. I may not have a car available so would need a source I could reach easily.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cookbooks?
moving on replied to JoyfulDancer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I also like Carol Fenster's book as well as her sorghum based mix. I often use it in other recipes as well. Robin Ryburg "Gluten Free Desserts" is a nice book to have if you enjoy baking. -
ARCHIVED Gritty Taste Of Gf Flours
moving on replied to christicrete's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've tried bean flours without the fava bean, which causes me problems, and did not detect the strong taste in my baked foods. There are several bean flours offered but I did have to use mail order. I'm using Carol Fenster's mixture and replacing the corn with bean. There is no rice in the mixture. The texture is more like the original baked goods we...
