You got 2 bags for 70.00 at WF?? I would do a happy dance if that ever happened to me. I never get out of there for under 300.00 Never!! And it is usually like 4 bags. And 70.00 at a regular grocery store will only get me about 2 bags of food....it aint right.....
hmm. I went to wegmans, spent $56 dollars and left with 3 full bags of stuff....I'm set for 2 weeks. but then I'm a poor college student shopping for myself.

haha. good points! So I talked to my mom how the family dinners went. she said they were good, but her stomach has been bothering her for a few days (nothing new, I've been trying to convince her it's gluten, shes not gluten-free like me) I said "well, GEE, it couldnt be the food, could it?" she said, "no I didnt eat that much, but I did eat a lot of turkey". My response: "well was the turkey stuffed?"....of course she said "yes".
Her cousins from italy are here for a week and made an itailan dinner tonight. I asked her how that went since she was upset I didnt go. She said it was great and that I couldve ate everything there if I went. I said "oh, really?? what was there?" she said: "they made two differant types of pasta, but it was pasta from italy"
OK stop right there, insert scream! at least thats what I wanted to do, SCREAM really loud lol. After all the explaining I've done to her and even walked her through the store showing her what i can an cannot eat, giving her numerous articles from this web site to read, she STILL doesn't get it!!! And she still asks me to go to the olive garden, even though I explained 10 million times why that is a bad idea.... AHH! her next doc appt. is in august, I keep telling her to get tested for celiacs, this will be interesting, she has all the symptoms of it, but is in denial, and still in denial about me I think....
rant over n' out

these are really good! I like the black pepper and the onion ones, the originals are good, but I had to get used to them. only problem is seeds tend to bother me. As long as I dont have too many I'm ok...I think...havent had them in a while
The blue diamond ones bother me...

O.K. I'm defintly staying away from potato chips altogether! I bought wise natural low sodium chips. I had them a couple days ago and had really bad gas that day. I just tried them again today and about 10 minutes after putting them in my mouth the bubbling and rumbling started up again!!!!!
thats ok though, they arent healthy, I'm definitly done with potato chips!
BLAHH!

I do a protein shake after my lifting sessions and Krav Maga classes, I blend (with hand blender) 1c light vanilla soy milk, 2 scoops Biochem vanilla protein powder and a handfull of frozen berries. Ends up to be about 300 calories and 30g protein. You could always leave out the berries and just bring in a shakable (is that a word??) container for on-the-go. It gives me enough to fill my stomach temporarily so I'm hungry again for a regular meal in a few hours--and it tastes really good!
i think I am going to do this, only I'll try using hemp milk. I cant have soy anymore

I remember telling my gastro Dr. (before I was diagnosed with celiac) that my mouth was shedding....and he just said "huh......I've never heard of that before, it must be your toothepaste". So then I asked my dentist, and he said the same thing.....it must be your tootepaste. So then I thought maybe the toothepaste was causing all my stomach problems too. At one point, I even thought the water at my home was causing all the problems. Good Lord, at one point I thought someone was trying to poison me..lol. After breaking up with gluten....my mouth has not shed, and I still use the same toothepaste I always did. I did get a water softener installed though, and I'm not accusing my husband of poisoning me anymore.....(heavy sigh) life is good!
ditto on this. I when crazy also, thinking it was the water! now I'm gluten-free, still use the same toothpaste, no shedding!

I have had this before going gluten-free also. it was almost border line bloating, but with that twisting sensation. it went away when gluten-free, but occasionaly I will experience some symptoms of it, just not anywhere near as bad. I find it is usually directly related to the foods I eat, and stress definitly is a factor with me. I find eatingplenty of cooked vegitables helps for me, but my sensation is usulyy realted to constipation/ also monthly problems which i havent seen a gyno for yet.
hope everything works out

I know this issue as probably been posted a million times, but I just wonder if I am sometimes becoming obbsessive with it??? I am a college student, poor, so I am unable to buy new cookware, toasters, ect, ect. I threw out my toaster I had and kept the toaster oven. I'm living with other people right now for the summer, my brother and occasionally my mom, who both consume LOTS of gluten stuff.
Here's what i did:
I took a couple of pots, cleaned them very good and put them through the dishwasher. I keep them in a seperate cupboard that isnt being used and use them only for myself and clean them with a clean sponge everytime I use them. I dont use a collander to drain my pasta, i just use the lid of the pot- cant take chances-
toaster oven: So ovbiosly this would be CC, but what i do is wrap whatever I'm cooking in double tin foil before putting it in on top of the tray (which I also cleaned and take out when finished. I always wash my hands before eating and after touching the outside of the tin foil. If I put a gluten-free bagel on top of tin foil in the toaster oven that also cooks gluten stuff it will this be ok? its not touching anything else in the toaster...I havent had a problem yet
I also have a cupboard and part of the fridge that only I use.
I just feel like I'm washing my hands all the time, I dont want to get an obbsessive compulsive disorder- LOL and I've been avoided eating out and going to family events with food (until I start feeling better). People are starting to get upset, but with the family events, I have a few people that want to cook gluten-free for me and want to make a whole menue, but I feel I need to talk to them before they do so because they dont understand CC. I mean, they want to make me stuff like cookies, but I'm pretty sure they wont buy new pans to make them. I wont even make cookies on my own pans b/c I made regular cookies on them in the past. (these are people that, when I refuse to eat chicken wings, told me just to rinse off the suace before I eat them
) There's actually a family dinner today where they are making turkey, I'm pretty sure it will be stuffed and I know they'll say "well, just take the first piece"....ummm.....yeah, it doesnt work like that since you are basting the turkey in the juce that is running out from the inside with the stuffing in it! I know I should go to be sociable and I can explain more about gluten-free, but my family is so demanding about food, they get very upset if I dont eat. and if I dont eat something they intended to be gluten-free then they'll really think I'm anorexic ha. not to mention I'm self diagnosed.
So I decided I'm going to have my own little gathering this summer and make all gluten-free food myself and invite people over, this way I can eat wiithout worry and explain how I made the stufff. I just feel like this can become so obbsessive, but I also refuse to go back to being a walking gas balloon who makes up excuses to stay home because I dont feel good and stuck on the toilet, or so bloated I cant wear normal clothes. and of course a host of other attractive problems....
sorry, just needed another rant...

OMG!!!! I thought I was the ONLY one! lol. YES, this happened to me before going gluten-free also!, it used to get imbarrassing because I'd go to work and skin would still be shedding in my mouth! it usually was really bad first thing in the morning after sleeping all night......after a while it got to a point where the skin started tearing away so much that I got soars, they thought I was nutts also and just said it was type I herpes/canker soars-lol now that I'm gluten free i havent had one problem, just occasional red dots in my mouth.

Hello fellow runner !
I too have dropped some weight since developing celiacs a few years ago but I'm guessing having to eat a cleaner diet had something to do with it ! I too am careful what I eat - always trying to get a bit of fat/protein/carbohydrates in every meal or snack. I work as a lifeguard & instructor as well so I have a bag of snacks in my locker to keep me going !
Some of my favorite energy breaks...
banana peeled or apple sliced & spread with peanut butter
2 eggs (minus a yolk) with light mayo, mashed, and eaten by dipping in gluten-free cheese rice crackers
tuna with light mayo and those crackers (or those small tuna tins are portable too)
Bora Bora "granola" bars from costco (lots of nuts - protein & fat glued together with rice syrup)
Mrs. May's "granola" bars or packs - very similar to Bora Bora
I like Kinnikinnick breads toasted (sunflower & flax is my fav) - sliced meat & melted cheese....
Grimm's light pepperoni sticks eaten in the same bite with some light cheese
Mesa sunrise cereal - with chopped nuts & dried cranberries or raisins
I also make rice or quinoa and make a salad - chopped black olives, capers, chopped veggies (carrots, peppers, whatever) - throw on a little balsalmic or rice vinegar, sesame or other oil, some ginger - whatever you got. I pack this with me in small containers. Heck, my breakfast is an egg mixed with about a cup of brown rice, a toss of sliced almonds or walnuts, and some dried cranberries - microwaved until the egg is cooked. I almost always have a container of steamed rice in my fridge (next to my microwave, my steamer is used a lot!).
Hope some of this helps. It does get repetitive but it's pretty healthy. I eat a lot more nuts these days than I ever did, but there's good energy in them, and good fats. I also buy RiceWorks chips at Costco or Safeway or wherever and repackage them in sandwich baggies for taking with me - sometimes one just needs higher energy !
thanks!!! thats some realy good advice! I'll definitly try the crackers and egg thing and the rice and quinou, I eat a lot of that already, but mixing it with differant things is a good idea. I always leave a yolk out when I make eggs also, I think it is the yolk that bothers me??
what kind of nuts do you buy? I prefer almonds, peanuts dont always agree with me, but I'm not sure if it is the brand b/c many say "made in a factory that produces wheat products". I have tried rs mays, very good! my only problem is I can control myself and eat too many
thanks again

cool. I used to eat yogurt before going gluten-free, but dairy bothers me now. I am also avoiding soy, although I can tolerate the small amounts like oil, soy letchin ect... small amounts of dairy like coffee creamer are ok too, but to drink milk or yogurt= not very happy stomach at all! I'm also light on the corn. as far as eggs, I havent ate them in a while because they were bothering me, I might try them back up again in a few weeks.

Hi, I'm a runner. I used to be heavy into distance running but sinceI started getting sick and went gluten free, I cut back quite a bit and stick to shorter faster runs with 1 or 2 long runs a week, I actually feel better doing this and can control my wieght better (although being gluten-free has helped in that area a lot). I also folllow up my runs with crunches and light wieght workouts.
I am very big on eating properly after I workout. I usually like to have fruit, like an apple after I run and then I make sure I have some form of protien at least an hour after (otherwise I start to feel fatigued in my muscles and crave sugar later on). Since I've been in college I just fell into the routine of having my main meal of the day an hour or so after I run, which is fine, but I'm starting to get sick of the routine and need something to eat that will help me recover, but will allow me to become hungry later on during the day. Right now, my main meal is after I run (in the afternoon) and I tend to eat small things throught the day after when I feel I need to. The thing is, I've fallen into feeling I need to eat my main meal right after running, leaving me not wanting to eat meals later on in the day if people invite me over to thier house or out to dinner. I mean, I eat a whole meal, ex: chicken, veggies, rice..... I just feel so satisfied I dont want to eat another large meal, and honestly dont get hungry enough too.
does anyone have any suggestion on easy gluten-free foods that I can eat after running that will give me protien and carbs, but will allow me to be hungery enough to eat a meal later in the day?? I know this seems wierd, but I've just fallen into the habit of eating that way because it works best for me, but not always the most convenient thing for a social life because then people think if I dont eat a whole meal when I go out I'm anorexic or something LOL which is definitly not the case beacause I'm always eating thoughout the day and love food, I just hate big meals late in the day.

Personally, I think our family has Celiac genes. But I'm the only one who is trying to get a dx. I think part of that is that if I can get a Dx, then maybe the rest will think about it. My father has reflux, my aunt (his sister) is pretty intolerant to wheat and has a messed up thyroid... hmmm
Then her two daughters cannot eat wheat very well, but they have yet to go gluten-free. They are of the belief, everything in moderation. One has hypothyroid, dairy intolerance and soy intolerance, the other is speculated to have fibromyalgia.
My brother has more gastro problems than ANYONE I know, and has thrived on a whole food diet. Somedays he says that bread bloats him, some days he doesn't. And honestly, I'm not so sure about my other brother.
Then there's me: a case study unto itself.
Ya think there's a pattern here?????
That's pretty much everyone from my father down. Oh yeah, did I mention that my grandma has a touchy stomach too?
So, I agree with you. I think the incidence in family is far greater than 10%. When the diagnostic tool can only be used after damage has occured, it can't help but be faulty. I thankfully, caught my digestive woes early on. Do I believe I have celiac? Absolutely. Will I ever find out for sure? I don't know. But removing gluten was only the beginning, I am still working on getting my health back on track.
Statistically, this is the most common genetic disorder. But, as you said, the research is still in it's infancy. Somewhere around 98 or 99% of people with celiac disease go undiagnosed. I think that until the diagnostic criteria change, that number will remain high. I agree with you, what if the number of people with the gene who develop celiac is much higher than they think? I think that it is possible to have the gene with out actually having the disease: there are people with the gene for Cystic Fibrosis, but never actually develop it.
But given the fact that people can be asymptomatic (or what they consider to be) and have celiac disease, it would stand to reason that more people who carry the gene would actually have Celiac than not.
Ok... that's enough of my incohesive reasoning for tonight... what a great thread!!!!
I agree with this. My family is exactly the same way. Every, and I mean EVERY perosn I know in my family has some kind of digestive problem. EVen my brother who said doesnt have any problems like me : after every meal he'll go to the bathroom, I can't help but hear it doesnt sound like normal pooping HAHA. and most of my family has the same mind set - moderation. they know wheat bothers them, but dont take it seriously. I'm the only one who went gluten-free.

I have had this mostly when I was eating gluten. SOmeties it would be with the stool, other times I would get the sensation to go and all that would come out was the mucous stuff, but like you said it is more like saliva, but thicker than water. I recently had this again while gluten free. it happens mostly wheni get constipated. I would really like to know what it is also! I'm almost thinking it is something our bodies make to protect the colon? especially in my case I was severly constipated, it literally was hard as a rock. I need to see a GI doc though becaue I also get blood from irritation...
ok I think I'm done with my poop descriptions LOL!

If you can go to the doctor tommarow then do it!!! or at least get in BEFORE you go gluten-free. if you go gluten-free before getting tested it could turn up negative. Be glad you are in the position that you recognized you may have celiacs and can make a doctors appointment. I had all the symptoms of it for over 6 years. by the time I recognized it could be celiac, I didn't have doctor and and my school health center at college just laughed at me because I said I suffered from gas/bloating/ diarhea. So I got fed up and went on the gluten-free diet because I didnt have anyone to help me. I was so sick on gluten at the time I just had to get off of it, now I'll never no for sure if I have celiacs or not because I cant go back, gluten makes me too sick. I feel better either way, but still its nice to no FOR SURE if you have it or not. It also makes the explanation to family easier if you are officially diagnosed
good luck, feel better!

I agree with the B12 recommendation. The most beneficial form is methylcobalamin. I have had very positive results with it.
Do be careful which product you choose, as most are cyanocobalamin, which actually has cyanide! Sometimes I think there are companies bent on killing us.
HAHA yeah I think that too sometimes with the companues
I will look into the b12. I'm hoping to see a GI doc soon because I've just started having severe constipation for the past few days, to the point where I have cramps and its right there, I have to go, but wont come out! and then there's blood-ahhh! and mucous, which I havent had since I was on gluten

Has anyone had trouble concentrating after going gluten free??
I've been at it for a couple months now, minus a couple CC incidents. I started a new job and I am just having the hardest time focusing on what people are telling me and memorizing information, it's like my brain does not want to work and I get frustrated!!!! When I was eating gluten I remeber getting like this when I needed food, but I make sure I eat just before work now, so I don't understand....I have been under a lot of stress too, but nothing that I havent experienced in the past, maybe this is just a part of my body balancing itself??? I hope so....
-
thats interesting. I just looked up pictures of DH. What I have definitly isnt as severe as that, but the red bumps are very similar, only I just get a few at a time/ usually close together. Is is possible to only get one or two?? and I dont ever rememebr having these bumps anywhere else besides my thighs.
The rash I get on my chest resembles more of a heat rash, its the same thing I get on my back, I'm athetic so I dunno if it's from that.... sometimes my arms will itch too.
-
For the longest time, on and off, I would wake up in the morning with what appeared to be bug bites on my legs, usually the upper thigh area, they were usually close togetehr, but there was never a center where you could see that something had actually bitten me. Sometimes they'd itch, other times they didnt and took over a week to dissapear, sometimes returning in the same spots or spreading??. My mom always said to wash my sheets every week b/c it was probably just bugs/spiders. BUt washing my sheets and cleaning the hell out of everything around my bed never helped- sometimes it made it worse!!!! I never really noticed the connection, but now that I think about it, when I went gluten free I didn't experience these little red "bites." A few days ago I started feeling glutened, I mustve been CC'd somewhere, but I woke up one morning in the begiinng of it with two of these red bumps right next to eachother on my upper thigh....
has anyone had this? is it really a bug bite or is it a reaction?
I also introduced peanuts again into my diet and am thinking this may have caused part of my reaction, peanuts have always given me a "rashy" break out on my face, not horrible, but enough for me to notice. (and I love peanuts too
) I've also noticed rash like tiny bumps on my chest, and my neck will itch occasionally in the front, leaving a red patch when I scratch...its like I have to keep scratching...i've always had this, but never realized it may be connected to Gluten after going gluten-free. I tend to get an oily face b/c I'm itailan, but I also have dry skin at the same time.....isnt that wonderfuL? haha

I'm 22 and people have pointed out grey hairs on me before I even turned 20

I majored in music back in college (in the OLDEN days) and have spent my life fiddling around with folksish, balladish, and now more and more old-timeish music. I've made one celiac disease and have performed here and there a little when opportunities came my way...not too much for the past 15 or 20 years, though.
I used to like to pencil sketch, but don't have time... now I do some knitting, crochet, when time allows for that.
Here's music stuff I've been working on/studying recently... I'm getting more and more interested in clawhammer banjo... recently went to West Va. to study with a clawhammer guy... which I never could have done before... I never travelled or left home much because of my gut... now I'm pretty good and I can get out away from home... a NEW thing for me now... at almost 2 1/2 yrs. gluten free...
here's some of that on my youtube page Open Original Shared Link
awesome! Thats acctually one of my worries, traveling. My goal is to be able to tour and I'm just thinking now, all I need to do is get CC and I will feel horrible for the next gig
here's my "one man (girl) band" project
its my space.com with "/msauers" at the end (it wouldnt let me post the site

I don't write music, but I love it. I have 2 guitars, and am learning to play them. I found a perfect quote one day:
I totally agree with that qoute! the sad thing is most of the mainstream music out there today is lacking it. BIG TIME
-
I am an artist by nature but not by profession. I love working with stained glass and painting and also enjoy making jewelry and working with textiles. Right now most of my artistic impulses are involved in my gardens and also with my writing. I am working on a childrens book about celiac, don't know if I will ever get it out there anywhere. I am also a published poet but do very little poetry writing nowadays.
What style of music do you write? Do you write the lyrics also?
awesome! I also am a writer and am writing a book (its a fantasy/adventure, kinda like lord of the rings but not as long and drawn out!!
) I have tons of poetry and also write lyrics to my songs as well as the music. I really dont know how to catorgorize the music, I guess its folk/rock/metal with hints of jazz and celtic???? am I alowed to post my myspace link here? (prob a stupid question lol)

I can definitly relate!!!!! I often give up on telling my mother how I really feel because she gives me the "youre thinking about it too much/all in your head" thig, then I say, "well how can I not think about it when I have constant pain in my stomach and migranes that wont go away??"

Small Ammounts Of Gluten
in Coping with Celiac Disease
Posted
I also sometimes take a long time to react. It depends. If I have a large serving of something with gluten, I get gassy/bloated/migrane soon after, sometimes I don't. It seems when I get CC or other small amounts somewhere I don't start feeling bad until 1-2 days after and it usually takes a good 5 days to feel good again. It all depends on how much stress I am under, what I ate...ect..ect.
