Libbyk, Click on the My Controls tab at the top of the page and then click on the tab on the right that says Edit Avatar Settings then follow the directions from there. You can download a picture of your own or you can choose from the list they have available.

Well, besides the fact that movie theater popcorn is way, way over priced, and that is putting it mildly, they have no right to stop you from bringing in your own food anyway. Celiac disease is covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act and even if you choose to bring in your own popcorn or other snacks in plain view they can't stop you, if they try...

ARCHIVED Cottage Cheese / Yogurt
kejohe replied to willamina's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Depends.... the natural flavors in some yogurts are where the probelm lies, and depending on where you are they can be made with gluten or may be gluten free. My son eats yoplait and dannon yogurts, and cozy shack pudding without any problems. I think Cascade and Brown Cow are also gluten free, but I don't know anything about Knudson. When in doubt,... -
ARCHIVED Canned Food
kejohe replied to azza's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mariann is correct, it's usually only the stuff made or processed out of the country. I have to think about it a lot, because I do most of my shopping at Sagayas (Asian Market) and nearly everything sold there is foreign. But if you can afford to buy the organic canned foods, you should usually be ok, because they are gererally not processed with any other... -
ARCHIVED Bread Falls In - Help!
kejohe replied to GFdoc's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Try dropping the temp down to 325 or 300 and baking for an hour or a little longer. Rice tends to cook better at lower temperatures and cooking longer sets the structure better so it will not fall after it comes out of the oven. -
ARCHIVED Canned Food
kejohe replied to azza's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It depends.... sometimes citric aciid, modified food starch, natural flavorings, artificial flavorvings that can be found in canned foods, can contain gluten, the easiest way really is to call the company. -
Hmmmm.... Kinky

ARCHIVED Corn Starch And Corn Flour?
kejohe replied to azza's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I see where you are coming from.... Masa isn't the same thing, your right, and I guess I have heard it called corn flour once before. But all my cookbooks, including my culinary school manuals say that corn starch and corn flour are the same, but that Masa is Masa or can be called, fine ground corn meal. But they still wouldn't be used in the same type... -
ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes?
kejohe replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Okay... what does it mean when you're a "non-secretor"? I have never heard that term before. -
ARCHIVED How To Eat Vegetables?
kejohe replied to gaceff's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Starting out slowly, like you would start a baby on solids is the right way to go. And also, stay with one fruit or vegetable for a few days, then introduce another, but never more than one at a time. Also, you might stay away from stone fruits (peaches, nectarines etc) supposedly they are much tougher to digest. At least until you built up a tolerance... -
Yeah, I guess that whole preffered provider thing can really get in the way. Luckily for my son, his ped was also my ped, so even though he is not a preffered provider with our insurance co, he waived all of our initial office cost, and the cost of a visit isn't too bad. Our insurance co still pays, but we have to fork out our cash, then get reimbursed. It...

Okay, I made the yellow cake.... finally, and holy cow it was sooooo good, I would never have know it was a gluten-free cake, if I hadn't made it myself. I am not a big fan of mayo, so I substituted with a combination of butter flavored shortening and regular butter (6 Tbs of shortening & 5 Tbs of butter). Then I beat the butter/shortening and sugar...

ARCHIVED Corn Starch And Corn Flour?
kejohe replied to azza's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No - corn flour is the European and Asian term, but they are the same thing. Cornmeal is different, but I have never seen it used in any situation even remotely related to one that would use corn flour/starch. -
Well, it doesn't work for me or my son. I was born in March and am a relatively healthy girl, my son, the celiac in our family was born in December.

ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
kejohe replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
I would also like to know how he died from celiac... I have never heard of that. I know all about the complications cauzed by untreated celiac disease, and that some of them can be fatal, but never the celiac itself. I would guess that he had a few other issues in addition to the celiac. -
Just curious... where is Dubai?
-
Hiya Ladies... just curious, why do you still see these doctors if they don't listen you? I have a celiac friend who mentioned just today that finding one good doc is nearly impossible, especially in this world of specialists. She said that the key is really trying to find a good primary care doc, who is willing to learn from you. And I think she is...

ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Corndog Recipe? Or Onion Rings?
kejohe replied to filititi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hey Mariann, I just bought some garbonzo bean flour the other day and have not used it in anything yet, so I am going to try this recipe soon thanks! -
ARCHIVED Reese's Pieces
kejohe replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Terri-Anne, I don't want to play the devil's advocate here but consider that maybe it wasn't a wheat issue at all but a bacteria issue from something else. What I mean is that the reaction you described, while it can be celaic symptoms, is also exactly what would happen if he picked up food poisoning from somethin as well, even more so with a fever (you... -
Been there... done that... got several t-shirts! Boy do I know how you feel! I remember that our first disaster was similar, but I can't even remember the exact circumstances now, after two years of my son being gluten-free. He was also dx'd at a year of age. Looking on the brighter side though, it really does get easier as you go. Try not to think about...

ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Corndog Recipe? Or Onion Rings?
kejohe replied to filititi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hmmm... I never really though about measurements, I'm kind of an eyeball it girl, but I'll give it a try. Just remember that your looking for a batter similar to pancake batter, maybe a bit thicker, so you can easily adjust the flour or soda depending on the thickness. 2 C rice flour 1 tsp baking powder pinch salt & pepper 1/2 tsp garlic powder... -
ARCHIVED Vh Soy Sauce
kejohe replied to tagger's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are several types of dim sum that use rice or tapioca flour to make their wrappers. But there are also a lot that use regular flour. The best example I can give you is sui mai (everyone spells it differently) but its traditionally made with a rice flour wrap and filled with a seasoned pork and shrimp mixture. But won ton, is always made with a wheat... -
ARCHIVED I'm New & Need Help
kejohe replied to stella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hmm, that's an interesting situation. It doesn't seem uncommon though. The best example I have is that I know quite a few families who have had one member diagnosed with celiac disease, but to save time and money, the entire family decided to go gluten-free. After a while, the non-celiac disease members started noticeing reactions whenever they ingested gluten... -
ARCHIVED Vh Soy Sauce
kejohe replied to tagger's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
lauriel234, Sometimes caramel color comes from barley, and is not gluten-free, but other times it comes from sugar. I never have used the LaChoy brand, because I didn't like it as well as the San-J, but a dietatician swore to me that it was gluten-free, and I know a celic gal who uses it all the time without problems. Have you ever tried the San-J low-sodium...
