ARCHIVED Hamburger Buns And White Bread
astyanax replied to LLH's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
whole foods has started making their own gluten-free bread and it is really good! -
like anytime a celiac eats outside the home, there is some risk. personally, I don't think i've ever gotten sick off mcdonald's fries and compared to BK and other places (i won't eat fries at BK anymore cos finding onion rings in my fries twice) i really do think they are the best fast food place for us (in my experience)

whole foods just came out with their own bread (at least the one by me) i think it's really really good and has 35 calories from fat per slice i also endorse ensure! i love that stuff. not all of it is gluten-free though, but you can check on their webpage for which products are gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination
astyanax replied to HeatherMelissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
i definitely understand the long term effects of consistently ingesting gluten (but thanks for the links! i should send those to my friends ) but what i'm confused about is the every little bit doing long term damage. for those of us who are pretty young that seems to spell out a future of being sick pretty much no matter how much you avoid gluten since... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination
astyanax replied to HeatherMelissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
at the risk of sounding stupid, especially since i have had this disease for so long, can someone describe exactly what the long term damage that is done to the body from ingesting gluten? i always thought it was more of a buildup process, like regularly ingesting gluten would do serious damage, and i am extremely strict (i usually don't eat out, and have... -
Jack Daniels Whiskey
astyanax replied to high maintenance's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OOPS i should have said irish whiskies. so if you're looking for triple distilled, check out jameson or BUSHMILLS (i just checked a bottle of bushmills and it clearly says distilled three times!) -
Jack Daniels Whiskey
astyanax replied to high maintenance's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the way i understand, gluten does not survive the distillation process. whiskey is actually triple distilled. -

ARCHIVED Lays Potatoe Chip Question
astyanax replied to mela14's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yeah this seems to be one of the products where the warning is real. i personally don't get sick very often and i have off of their chips so i don't eat them anymore. -

when i was around 13 i was found to have low platelets. i wasn't diagnosed with celiac until i was 18, which is the same age symptoms started showing up. at last count i was around 85k for platelets. it's never affected my life in any way though and my mother, my aunt, and my brother, none of whom have celiac, all have low counts as well. i was told...

ARCHIVED Achol
astyanax replied to bambi-liz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
cider is a good substitute for beer, all i've encountered (cider jack, strongbow, magners, woodchuck, woodpecker, K) are gluten free but HORNSBYS is NOT gluten free -
ARCHIVED Burger King, Macdonalds, Wendys, Arbys
astyanax replied to deener's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
i rarely eat out but twice in the past year i've gotten french fries from BK and both times there was an onion ring in there. personally i think BK fries are the best but it's too risky for cross contamination -
i think that 1 in 133 includes a lot of people who don't know they have celiac and i don't think it's really accurate to use to determine customers i would LOVE to go somewhere like that, maybe you could also try offering things that aren't gluten-free but are vegan, organic, things like that to grab a whole audience of special needs diners? i went to...

the best countries are ireland and the UK: they speak english AND have a high rate of celiac so you can just walk in a foodstore and the food is labeled suitable for celiacs! plus at many restaurants they have gluten-free menus and waiters know what you're talking about oftentimes! overall, celiac (or coeliac as it's spelled there) is much more prevalent...

ARCHIVED Booze
astyanax replied to traci's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
personally i have no problems with drinking... were you on meds though? even something over the counter? even if a med doesn't have any alcohol warning, they can make you feel kind of funny. or everyone i know (none of whom has celiac) will have completely random reactions to alcohol - like someone who can always drink a ton will get sick off of like 2 beers... -

ARCHIVED Wheat Starch
astyanax replied to traci's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
although this product definitely sounds like it is NOT ok, it is possible for something to have wheat starch in it and be considered "gluten free" - in europe they do that, but i've never seen something from the states that had wheat starch in it and was gluten free and even if i did see wheat starch and gluten free on the same label here i would still call... -
ARCHIVED Heineken International Updated Again...fyi
astyanax replied to Sterndogg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the US does not have a standard. that doesn't mean that some things labeled gluten free aren't truly gluten free, but just because something is, does NOT mean it is completely gluten free. some companies, like ensure for example, have told me they follow the european standard since the us does not have one. someone on the board said canada's standard is... -
ARCHIVED Heineken International Updated Again...fyi
astyanax replied to Sterndogg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
i notice that only addresses heineken .. what about amstel ? if amstel light is gluten free according to the euro standard, that's fine with me. a lot of my food is from europe and i know some of my american food labeled "gluten free" have said they adhere to the european standard (the US having no standard). when i've been in europe (a total of 2 1/2 months... -

astyanax replied to mela14's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
i'm on zelnorm.. have been taking it for about a month for stomach bloating. in the past week i've noticed my bloating has gotten better some days (some days are just normal bad bloating) but i'm not sure if that's the zelnorm or the fact i haven't been eating much cos of finals. how long did it take people who are on zelnorm for it to affect you ? and... -
ARCHIVED Vaccines
astyanax replied to gfmelissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
uhh no one's legal rights are being taken away. i think richard is just trying to take a common sense approach to celiac, which i appreciate. personlly, if a vaccination had gluten, i would still take it. the sickness i'd feel from that are far better than getting the disease and putting others at risk around me by having the disease. of course if you have... -
ARCHIVED Frito-lay Baked Lays
astyanax replied to cdevane's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
i have found that i get sick too from their chips, and i don't consider myself especially sensitive to gluten. i think i remember seeing on this site though that they were planning to make dedicated lines for their plain chips? don't know if that's true or if it's happened yet. -

astyanax replied to WayneB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
