astyanax replied to jjc's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
i'd recommend lili's 57 at 57th and 7th, it's an easy walk from times square. Open Original Shared Link -
thanks for all the helpful suggestions. i exercise a lot but i need to increase my strength training / weight lifting to target bone buildup. i'll also ask my doctor about magnesium and zinc, i didn't know there was a connection. my main concern though is that everything i read says there is a likelihood of osteoporosis with undiagnosed celiac in someone...

hi, i'm wondering if anyone can help me understand my recent diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis. i was diagnosed in 1998 and have gluten-free ever since. i never cheat on the diet and i go with assumption that everything has gluten and work backwards from there. i rarely have stomach problems anymore (and can almost always trace it back to something...

ARCHIVED Actual Coach gluten-free Meal On Continental
astyanax replied to babysteps's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
i've had great luck with continental. there have been a few times where they haven't had the meal, but they acknowledge it (rather than trying to slip a meal with gluten to you) the best is coming home from europe, cos they get the gluten free food in europe which is always better than here in the states -

i was just at a wedding this weekend. i got the number of the caterer from the bride and groom and spoke with her and she was extremely nice and helpful. (bonus: my friends are so nice they surprised me with gluten-free whole foods brownies for dessert!) last summer i went to a wedding where i did not know either the bride or the groom (i was going as a...

i went to mangia trattoria for the first time tonight and it was AWESOME! first off it was so cool to just go into a local place (my mom lives less than 20 mins away) and grab some pizza. it came in real pizza boxes which was fun, i felt normal! the best part about the pizza is that isn't super small. it's not quite normal size but it's one of the largest...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free In North Jersey?
astyanax replied to allison lynn xo's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
hi! i'm in northern jersey too - i grew up in bergen county, and i'm in hoboken now. there's a GREAT restaurant in Ho-Ho-Kus called Janice's - the food is EXCELLENT, a lot of it is gluten free (they will tell you what is/isn't, it seems like most is) and they have gluten free bread. it's great if you want to go somewhere beyond chain restaurants (that... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Dining In Holland
astyanax replied to nate's mom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
i've been to holland twice, once in amsterdam and once in boxtel (near eindhoven). i had good luck both times. in amsterdam, i stuck mostly to milk and fruit and dry food i brought with me from the states, but that's just cos i didn't want to spend the money on going out to eat! get a celiac card in dutch (they are online for free, search through google... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Gluten-free Restaurants Etc. In Ireland And Denmark
astyanax replied to Rusla's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
i just got back from dublin and belfast. both northern ireland and the republic have coeliac societies just look it up on google (like 'coeliac' and 'ireland'). in dublin, in temple bar there's a great restaurant called 'fitzer's' and their menu is clearly labelled. there's also a placed called 'FXB' like a steak place near the river, they are really good... -
i'm traveling to stockholm and helsinki for the first time on a backpacking trip. i was wondering what the deal is with the gluten free cheeseburgers at mcdonalds? is it in all mcdonalds or is it one special one in Helsinki? is there a special name for it? i've heard english is widely spoken in both cities so will i be ok with just asking in english for gluten...

ARCHIVED Safeway Products
astyanax replied to I3Daniel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
does anyone know if the 'harvest medley' salads are gluten free? at the top they say 'safeway select' and they are those salads that are prewashed ready to eat. one of them has frosted almonds and sweetened dried cranberries and the almonds have 'natural and artificial flavors'. if anyone knows that'd be great ! these salad bags are so convenient and the... -
i can understand wanting a child to get to experience something normal like french fries at a fast food place. personally i just 100% avoid BK because, even though they said they were fried in separate friers, i kept finding onion rings in the french fries. i suggest going to any other fast food place with gluten-free fries in dedicated friers.

i'm not sure how it is possible to eat at a buffet without cross contamination. people stick a spoon into something then over their plate - if there's bread or whatever on their plate, they easily come in contact. plus at cheaper buffets there's always food slipping into the wrong bins.

i'm going to italy in march! i've been to europe before, i find the language barrier is the biggest problem (i don't speak any foreign languages). DEFINITELY bring cards in italian that explain celiac and bring a bunch so you can just give them to the waitstaff and chefs. i went on the italian celiac website but it's in italian only (as far as i could...

i love both the raw chicken and the medication analogies! thanks for a great way to explain to people how important avoiding cross contamination is.

ARCHIVED Recommendations In Washington, Dc?
astyanax replied to bpritt's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
i just moved to bethesda, MD and i'm still pretty unfamiliar with where stuff is but i do know there's a legal seafoods right off the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop (the red, green and yellow lines all stop there) and there's also an irish pub called 'fado's' that has strongbow cider on tap! bethesda, off the red line, has an austin grill, ruth... -
ARCHIVED What (in Your Opinion) Is The Best Place In The World To Travel
astyanax replied to frenchiemama's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
ireland was pretty good, but i gotta say disneyworld is the best ! every restaurant can serve gluten free and they have a huge variety of restaurants with different types of food etc. they have stuff in the parks and the hotels and they make you feel like it's a pleasure for them to cook gluten free -
i feel like it's almost impossible to eat gluten-free there. the salsas all get contaminated cos the same spoon that goes into them goes onto a wheat flour tortilla. i would imagine even if they change their gloves, if it's something a spoon has been dipped into, it's not ok. sometimes i get the chips though, if you get them take away they are already in...
