  1. My son, an adult Celiac, swears by activated charcoal (you can buy capsules at vitamin stores, whole foods markets, etc.) when he accidentally gets contaminated.
  2. Very possibly. I mean, she had to get it from one parent's side or the other, it is genetic. My adult son was diagnosed about 11 years ago -- I'd never heard of it, and at the time none of the doctors said anything to us about testing parents or siblings. Eventually, after 10 years of asking my personal physician to test me for it, with all my ongoing...
  3. There are so many mainstream grocery products that are OK for us, I was surprised. Something that made my gluten free life (and shopping) much easier was a grocery shopping guide. There are also some electronic downloadable guides which I'm sure you can find searching celiac sites. Here are links to different guides: Open Original Shared Link...
  4. Yes, from all accounts, seems like the best initial advice is to keep it simple. You will find, however, that there is more safe food out there than you realize. Many mainstream grocery items are gluten free. There are shopping guides available, I like the cecilia's marketplace grocery guide (Open Original Shared Link). It's about $25 but worth it ...
  5. Well, lots of great advice here, for sure. I am the Celiac in my house. We do not operate a gluten free home or kitchen, we are just careful and conscious of our food prep. It was a little hairy-scary at first (on both our parts) but now it is old hat. We sort of just have his-and-hers pasta -- I make the spaghetti meat sauce with all the stuff...
  6. And Vitamin D is equally important (as magnesium). Info on osteoporosis sites on the web states that "enhances calcium absorption in the body - it helps with bone formation and when taken along with calcium, plays a critical role in maintaining bone density." I don't know what area you live in, but if you have Vitamin Cottages (aka Natural Grocers) their...
  7. You will get a lot of empathy here on this site, that's for sure. We've all been there, just varying degrees of frustration. I'm sorry your family is not on board, some folks just don't grasp the seriousness of it. First, life will take an immediate turn for the better when you don't stand in the grocery aisle and read labels for 20 minutes per product...
  8. Hello, I was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease this past August. My G.I. doc that I recently made an appointment with just ordered the blood work a couple weeks ago, stating that it's been six months so my levels should be re-checked. Now, my primary care doc would not have known this and probably never would have ordered a re-check. I would say...
  9. I just had my 6 mo. follow up bloodwork also, it was non-fasting.
  10. I'm scheduled for a CT scan of abdomen next week and must ingest a solution prior, it is called Readi-CAT. I looked it up online and called the Readi-CAT's toll free number (E-Z-EM, www.ezem.com) to make sure it is gluten free and safe for celiacs. The answer was AVOID THE VANILLA and stick to the berry flavors -- the vanilla flavor may have some gluten...
  11. Did anyone mention that you should not use their toaster? If you can't find those toaster sleeves that keep your gluten-free bread safe in a contaminated toaster, you could always just pick up a $10 toaster at a Kmart or something, and just leave it there until your next visit.
  12. Understandably, a diagnosis of celiac disease would concern most. However the sooner you know the sooner you can begin to heal. You don't want half a lifetime of damage. I'd get tested ASAP. And, by the way, you have to be eating gluten regularly to be tested, it needs to be in your system (it's when you eat gluten that your body creates the antibodies...
  13. For all you Celiacs out there in Denver area who are mourning the loss of being able to eat at your favorite fish & chips place, the Washington Park Whole Foods just started stocking the Starfish brand frozen gluten free battered fish (cod and haddock). Oh man! Crispy, nice sized pieces of fish -- I'm so happy. Had tried another brand once and...
  14. Well since diagnosis last August I've found a couple gluten-free-friendly restaurants in the Denver area, and also figured out a few safe things I can have at our favorite Mexican restaurant. I haven't, however, yet tried our favorite Chinese restaurant. Wondering what everyone's experiences have been with Asian food and typical sauces, etc.
  15. Definitely worry about deli meats. When my sons was first diagnosed over 10 years ago, we all thought, oh, gee, it's meat, so it's OK. But he'd get sick after being at my house and eating a sandwich (on gluten-free bread). One day at the store we asked the clerk to hand it to us before slicing so we could see the ingredients, and it was a paragraph...
  16. Like someone recommended, you could heat some things up on a grill (gas grill or charcoal). If you don't have one, maybe just pick up a little one, or even a little back-packer camp cook burner. If not a possibility, you can eat canned goods as is without heating (of course, they would be more appetizing if warmed, but...) Progresso has several OK, gluten...
  17. According to the Cecilia's Marketplace info: Contains Gluten! (REMOVE From Guide): Swanson: REMOVE: Lower Sodium Beef Broth (14 oz can ONLY) REMOVE: Organic Broths (All) REMOVE: Ready To Serve Beef Broth (14 oz can ONLY) Gluten-Free (SAFE): Swanson: Natural Goodness Chicken Broth (All) Chicken Broth (All) Vegetable Broth (14 oz can) Chicken...
  18. Who enforces this? Next time you're at the grocer, read the ingredients on their V8 ready to serve Butternut Squash Soup -- it looks safe, but like I said it didn't name the source of the Modified Food Starch. And when I questioned them, they sent this rambling reply and never directly answered my question: ...we received your message and appreciate...
  19. The Hormel Natural Choice hams are gluten free, and it's even on the label. Also Boars Head deli meats (you could just have it sliced thick for your purpose) have it printed right on the front of the package, and I think all are OK. Canned soups, Progresso has quite a few that are safe. At least, that are gluten free - you'll have to read them for the...
  20. I don't know what specifically is now an ingredient in each of the product lines, but I'd sent Campbell's an email asking about one of their ready-to-serve soups in the boxes - the V8 Butternut Squash one - and they replied that their modified food starch could be derived from wheat. All other ingredients listed looked safe, but that one (modified food starch...
  21. Just FYI, to all my fellow Celiacs.......I just saw a notice on the Cecilia's Marketplace website, under Product Alerts stating that Campbells has recenty changed ingredients and products that were OK now contain gluten. I didn't trust any of their soups anyway, but I do use some of the Swanson's broths in cooking and soup making. If anyone is using products...
  22. For me, it happens (feeling bad!) fairly soon after ingesting gluten. Usually within the hour, but a couple times has been a few hours later, but has always been that same day/evening. I try to be so careful since I, too, started feeling better within the first week (and especially after the first month) - I just don't want to ruin it (my progress). ...
  23. I've found that some hams do, indeed, have gluten. It never ceases to amaze me what it can show up in. I know that Hormel's Natural Choice hams do not, and even say so on the label. Here is a statement I copied from their website: Gluten Free
  24. Here's a good resource for explaining what the different tests are, and their reliability, etc. Open Original Shared Link It's the University of Chicago Celiac Center website - lots of good info there. You could even print out a page and take it with you to your appointment -- sometimes it helps for the medical people to see you referencing something...
  25. There are lists you can purchase, that are really handy (our local CSA chapter in Denver sells one for about $10, and there's one you can buy online for about $25 that's more inclusive, go to Open Original Shared Link And don't forget Rice Chex -- they are now on the OK list. Not sure what grocery stores you have near you, but Whole Foods Market has...
