  1. Just wanted to chirp in here . . . Some eye drops have side effects that can include stomach pain. Also note that it is possible to ingest eye drops after they are dropped into the eye. "At the inside corner to each lid . . . there is a tiny hole . . . The purpose of this hole is to drain tears . . . These tears drain . . . into the back of the nose at the...
  2. Thank you, lbd, for the link. I believe that we have disagreed in the past but I hope we can agree that studies of this sort can be informative. I did not believe that I was "hijacking" a topic by merely asking a question or two. Most others here have responded by saying, basically, that there "seems" to be a connection, or that they are sharing their opinion...
  3. Without going off into conspiracy theory territory, when you make radical assertions such as, "Celiacs usually have more than one allergy," and "Being a Celiac can trigger . . . allergies," it would be helpful to many on this forum, I believe, if you could back this up with some type of evidence or scientific basis or proof or medical study or doctor statement...
  4. Hi SalmonNationWoman: I don't believe I have heard from my doctor or read any medical studies that show that those of us with celiac disease "usually have more than one allergy." Especially considering that celiac disease is not an allergy? And similarly, I don't believe that I have ever heard from my doctors or read a medical study that shows that "being...
  5. Personally, I am asymptomatic - I have no gut issues. I would eat gluten in a heartbeat if not for the worry about my auto-immune system. So the vaccine would be great for me although I don't think that would be the answer for everyone.
  6. I'm not sure a vaccine would help in that regard, but researchers are looking at different areas: Transglutaminase inhibitors: To inhibit conversion of gluten to more toxic form Oral proteases: To destroy toxic fragments in the gut or during baking process Zonulin inhibitors: To reduce passage of gluten across gut lining There is hope! Open Original...
  7. Way to go Dr Tye-Din! I would love to eat a good old cheeseburger again or a corned beef sandwich. Per another source, the concept: "Jason is working with Dr Robert P Anderson. His submission focussed on the development of a coeliac vaccine that would target the disease-causing T cells that are reacting to the toxic fragments of gluten, and make them...
  8. They are rice noodles - made from rice flour and water and not much else! Always worth checking with the particular restaurant, though, just to be safe. The beef broth/stock is prepared separately from the rice noodles (at my favorite restaurants). Rice noodles are cooked separately and then placed into the serving bowl. The soup is ladeled over the noodles...
  9. Pho and spring rolls should be safe. Along with crepes. You won't find much wheat flour in use - usually rice flour. But you might find soy sauce in any number of the dipping sauces or grilled meat marinades, so be sure to ask about soy sauce. Fish sauce should be okay and that seems to be widely used. I used to love Vietnamese sandwiches but I guess those...
  10. I'm gluten free for a mere six months now, near as I can remember. So I'm just a baby at this! I realize that many have noticed their sensitivity to gluten increasing with time as they remain gluten free. So far that is not the case with me but who knows what the future will bring? I know that some people can become suddenly sensitive to gluten after only...
  11. I never knew I had celiac disease, either. I got diagnosed via endoscopy when the doctors were looking for something else. I had no symptoms. I have been gluten free for 6 months (I believe) and I can think of one time when I for sure ate gluten. Even then I did not suffer with any symptoms. I cannot tell if I am getting cross contamination. The only way...
  12. sign me up - I'd like to see the recipe!
  13. Ouch! Actually I did provide answers to several of your questions. You asked about gluten sensitivity and I let you know that there is no industry standard or commonly accepted gluten sensitivity test. You asked about cancer risk related to gluten intolerance and I let you know that I knew of no medical studies showing any relation between gluten intolerance...
  14. Hi silverfleur and newburyport: I am very curious: won't anyone at Enterolab answer these questions for you? I am not aware that there is any commonly accepted test for gluten sensitivity. I am also unaware of any medical study that indicates that gluten sensitivity can predispose one to a cancer risk. I think it's very important for you both to recognize...
  15. I'm a celiac with osteopenia. Dietitian suggested that a multivitamin "couldn't hurt" so I take one each morning. I take combo vitamin D/calcium supplement twice a day. This recommended by my doctor. Pharmacist suggested that virtually any vitamin D supplement would be fine so I should get the least expensive. He also said to be sure to take it twice a day...
  16. ginnybean: Hang tough! A 'meat and potatoes' diet is perfect for someone with celiac! You should be able to find a nice steak house that you can both enjoy. Visit a Wendy's with him and while he has a triple cheese you can order a baked potato and chili. You don't need to go out to health food type restaurants to eat gluten-free. In fact, I used to...
  17. I love using sweet rice flour as a thickener for gravies and the like. I use it just like regular flour. Sprinkle over melted butter to make a roux. Then add liquid slowly to make the sauce (using a whisk). I'm not much for measuring so I looked up someone else's meaurements: 4 T Butter/fat, 3-4 T Sweet Rice Flour, 1 1/2 C liquid. It's really easy to use...
  18. Don't forget roasted brussel sprouts! I really love them roasted but not a big fan if they are boiled/steamed. Not sure if rosemary pairs well with brussel sprouts but great with just oil/salt/pepper. A little bacon is great, too. Perfect with salmon.
  19. You should now contact your regular primary care doctor, AKA your internist, for other testing. At least in my case, the diagnosis came from the GI but other testing and referrals came through my internist. You should ask for further blood testing for nutritional/vitamin/mineral deficiencies. He/she should order a bone density scan. And you should at the...
  20. Hi! Just in case you were at all confused, the Enterolab results cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease. Some doctors might take a look at them but the Enterolab website itself makes clear that their tests do not diagnose celiac disease. Sorry - you can get their testing done but you still won't know if you have celiac disease. I really know of...
  21. I never even would have known I have celiac disease if not for my doctor and the pathology group! So without them I could quite literally be killing myself. For their vigilance I will be ever grateful. Very happy with my current medical care but I will work to keep them on their toes. My health is my responsibility and I consider my relationship with...
  22. Thank you so much cruelshoes! It is good to know that I can safely ingest glucose syrup and maltodextrin.
  23. I don't have any personal experience with Aricept but I was curious so I looked at their website. It says: "It may take up to several months to start seeing the benefits of ARICEPT."Open Original Shared Link I'm glad that things are better for your aunt.
  24. It is possible to be gluten intolerant and still tolerate gluten. That's not my opinion, that's the opinion of the very well-respected doctor Fasano who is an expert in celiac disease. Dr. Fasano indicates that some gluten intolerants can tolerate 'a piece of pizza.' (This as opposed to celiac disease - if you have celiac disease you can't even have a crumb...
  25. I just want to second that a full medical history is very, very, very important. This means that not only should your child's doctor know your child's complete medical history, he/she should also know the records of mom and dad, siblings, and grandparents. If you don't have one please start preparing it right away - it could literally save your life. If a...
