Told you so! Hi Takala - sorry that you haven't had a good experience. I believe Kaiser is being sued for other things as well. I can't think of an HMO that isn't being sued! But you are incorrect, IMO, regarding the nurse - I have spoken several times with registered nurses - they provide their names - you can look them up in the Kaiser directory...

rinne: I was responding to Fiddle-Faddle. Sorry, Peter - just saw your note. Singing off. SBJ. Peace. Out.

I think that the only way you would be happy is if you yourself were permitted to have a discussion with each Kaiser Permanente patient in person and tell them of your own particular fears (backed up, of course, by sources that only you trust)! How exactly are they to present your side's view in their own words? Who represents your side? The obligation...

I didn't figure you would say it was accurate! (There's no need to reopen the discussion about MMR vaccines - that was beside my point.) I think the important point here is that Kaiser does explain that there is a fear of an autism/MMR link (I don't believe the CDC flyer addresses it): Open Original Shared Link So although Kaiser (and most other...

Hope your teeth don't fall out! Left coast, Southern California, Long Beach. Kaiser Permanente (not sure if link will work): Open Original Shared Link The MMR flyer that is handed out - see "When are mumps immunizations given" - is produced by the CDC. For the colonoscopy prep we even saw some videos and I was told there was the threat of...

ARCHIVED Cheap Celiac Food Besides Fruit And Veg
sbj replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
rice noodle soup, tuna, pnut butter, chicken thighs -
It's quite interesting to read these stories about people who were never warned by their doctors/HMOs about anything. My experience has been so different. Before my first colonoscopy I was required to attend a two hour session where the dangers were explained and I had to sign a paper certifying my attendance and understanding. When I got a flu shot they...

I've only tried the Glutino frozen and Z so my experience is limited. My partner tried the soy and I had the mozzarella. Neither one of us liked it and thought it really was a waste of money. My thinking: just give up pizza coz this was no substitute. However, that's just one opinion. Maybe that is as good as they get I certainly hope not! Have...

Just had to chime in here. I'm on the west coast - Long Beach in Southern California - so no Uno's but we do have a chain here called Z Pizza. Some of their restaurants are now offering a gluten free pizza. It comes in the personal size only. They also offer non-dairy soy cheese topping. It all sounds good until you try to eat the pizza. It was not good at...

ARCHIVED Partial Gluten Free Diet?

Okay - I'm gonna take your word and shell out the money for the mix over at Sprouts! I'll be billing you if it ain't any good. -
ARCHIVED Partial Gluten Free Diet?
sbj replied to Forensicmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm going to have to let someone else chime in here because a whole slew of people disagree with me about this. You can diagnose celiac disease via the celiac blood panel and the endoscopic biopsies; you can confirm the diagnosis by a positive response to the diet; you can support the diagnosis by genetic testing. Enterolab testing doesn't diagnose anything... -
I am in Long Beach, CA so I go to a local facility in Long Beach - less than 2 miles from home - to see intern, get blood work, pharmacy, and even physical therapy. Hospital/emergency/walk-in/colonoscopy/endoscopy/CT scan and other procedures I have done at both South Bay/Harbor City Medical Center in Harbor City, CA and Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower...

I am in southern California. Advice nurses: You can simply call in anytime when you are having an issue and you will speak with a registered nurse. This is helpful when you can't make an appointment or don't want to miss work. RNs are highly trained professionals and they can give you an idea of whether you need to come in for a visit or not. They do NOT...

Zella - I don't think you are trying to start drama. In the past I have posted about my good experience with Kaiser and I have been pilloried so I am somewhat hesitant. The problem with posting positive experiences is that someone here will feel the need to bash Kaiser as soon as they read what I post and I don't want to start some silly tit for tat waste...

ARCHIVED Partial Gluten Free Diet?
sbj replied to Forensicmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you feel better when you don't eat gluten then I would say stop eating gluten! You may want to get the genetic test to further help with your diagnosis. I don't understand why stomach problems would be diagnosed as anemia? It's not likely that you have celiac disease but I won't say that you don't. It's possible that you are gluten intolerant but there... -
I do! I do! (Trident anyone?) (Ever get the feeling that someone is reviving a thread because they are trying to get a rise out of someone? ) Honestly - it's the best HMO I've ever had but I'm sure plenty of people have had bad experiences with Kaiser, too (and with other HMOs). This forum is full of people who absolutely hate all doctors and...

ARCHIVED Partial Gluten Free Diet?
sbj replied to Forensicmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think I'm just backing up raven: Get yourself tested so that you know what you have. I know that idea - that you can get an accurate diagnosis - is controversial on this forum but I think it's possible. So we do disagree that it can be ruled out. There are those who self-diagnose as gluten intolerant and then 'cheat' every once in a while. We agree... -
Wow! Getting philosophical now! I have often found the following source to be helpful when trying to sort internet truth from fiction: Open Original Shared Link It's fun to read, too. I should think that it's pretty obvious what jestgar is trying to say: there's a lot of obvious garbage out there and plenty of people trafficking in conspiracy...

ARCHIVED Partial Gluten Free Diet?
sbj replied to Forensicmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Forensicmom: I disagree with tarnalberry in one particular respect. You ask if reducing the amount of gluten will make a difference. Well, that depends on a few things but mostly on what it is that you have. That is, do you have celiac disease, are you gluten intolerant, or do you have a wheat allergy. These are three different things. There's a... -
ARCHIVED I Found My Diagnosis Not My Doctor, And It Bothers Him.
sbj replied to I hate gluten's topic in Doctors
I think you are making the mistake that Tim-in-VA earlier described - see this link: Open Original Shared Link The availability heuristic is a phenomenon (which can result in a cognitive bias) in which people base their prediction of the frequency of an event or the proportion within a population based on how easily an example can be brought to mind... -

Actually, I think my HMO and doctor are typical. Thanks for your reply. I have had a fantastic experience with my healthcare provider - they are doing a great job! -

Re: Doctors quick to prescribe medications instead of lifestyle changes. I urge commentors here to switch doctors if you find yourself visiting one who does not prescribe lifestyle changes as a first course of action (when appropriate). My situation may not be typical or representative but it certainly is typical of those who visit my doctor and my HMO... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
sbj replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just read about a doctor who was sued for malpractice because he failed to perform an endoscopy - so I think that might be a concern for many doctors. That is, if they say you have celiac disease they'd better be darned sure it isn't something worse - like stomach cancer. I think that's why they sometimes ask you to get the endoscopy - just trying to be... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
sbj replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am trying to find something to disagree with but I can't! I certainly agree that the endoscopy is not always necessary. I often provide this link (Open Original Shared Link) and reprint the following portion which points out that the endoscopy is not necessary for diagnosis: "Research in the most recent issue of Alimentary Pharmacology ... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
sbj replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Where to start? In general, one could try the diet without harming the child. In some cases, however, where the underlying condition was serious - say ulcers or tumors -'trying' a diet for a while could be quite harmful. I believe this might be why doctors sometimes order the endoscopy even with positive blood results - in an overabundance of caution. And...
