  1. Don't floaters mean you have a lot of fat in your stool? And one reason you might have a lot of fat is because you are not absorbing it properly (celiac). If you have celiac but are gluten free and still experiencing floaters, it might be because your diet is too high in fat. Even when you are absorbing fat properly if you eat too much you're gonna end...
  2. Why didn't our ancestors notice it? They did! "As far back as the second century, a Greek physician named Aretaeus of Cappadocia wrote detailed descriptions of celiac disease symptoms in children and adults, including diarrhea with fatty stools, gassiness, wasting, weakness, and pallor. Aretaeus called his patients by the Greek word koiliakos, which...
  3. This may sound flip but I don't mean it that way. Why don't you go to your doctor and ask for a celiac blood panel? That would be a good starting place!
  4. When you are first diagnosed celiac you should undergo a complete blood count, check all your vitamin and mineral levels, you should get a bone density test, and you should discuss with your doctor any symptoms you have that might be associated with some of the auto-immune disorders that celiac sufferers also tend to get. The bone density test, in particular...
  5. Depends, I suppose. For me, my gastro thought everything looked fine. He took only a single biopsy. Pathology came back a week later with results and my gastro was surprised that they had seen indicators of celiac sprue. I then took the blood test for confirmation, and later had genetic test for further confirmation. While I hope you get some answers...
  6. Yes, I would change your eating plan quite a bit. You should be eating three square meals a day - at about the same time each day - and you should finish up with a snack in the early evening. (I found that while losing weight I was actually eating MORE for breakfast than I had before.) You need to get your calories from the proper balance of carbs, protein...
  7. This article is poorly written. I found something much more clear: Open Original Shared Link Another nutraceutical being developed in Alberta may offer a treatment of sorts for a disease that
  8. I certainly hope you find some relief. Perhaps a second opinion on the blood test results? The mouth sores could definitely be related to celiac, but there are other possibilities you may want to investigate. HFMD (coxsackie virus), pemphigus, herpes virus, Crohn's disease, A reaction to medication, and other food allergies.
  9. There's no need to be scared of an endoscopy!
  10. Costco also has great prices on vitamins. I want to point out that the cost of name brand prescription drugs is not controlled by the cost of the ingredients themselves; the cost is controlled by the manufacturer's need to recoup their research and development expenses while showing a profit (which they owe to their shareholders). If the pharma companies...
  11. Hi Tall for a girl! You are, of course, correct. I hope you don't find yourself getting discouraged by those who distrust the medical community. I believe that doctors honestly have our best interests at heart, that most take their hippocratic oath seriously, that they have done far more good than harm, that they have saved countless lives and alleviated...
  12. Thanks for the Tom Sawyer suggestion. I may try it after I exhaust the flours I already have. I'm really trying to find a gluten-free flour that is less gritty and reasonably priced. Preferrably something that doesn't require xanthan gum but I guess that's a pipe dream. I've received suggestions for various mixes that include xanthan and so far it seems...
  13. Per the following article, I believe that a transglutaminase antibody level over 30 U/mL means there is a 100% chance your daughter has celiac disease and no biopsy is necessary for diagnosis. The results you post appear to indicate a level of 58 U/mL. However, I really would have the Down Syndrome specialist confer with your Ped GI. There is a chance...
  14. Thanks! Next time I'm at Sprouts I'll try to find soy flour at a reasonable price. I used 2 total cups flour mix so the rice flour was less than 3/4 cup but I could still taste the grittiness. You don't think a cookie recipe would work without any rice flour? I had some packaged cookies from Sun Flour Baking Company (Lemon Shortbread) that were really good...
  15. I hope everything works out okay with your sister in law. Sounds like an 'emotional' issue to me ... wish I could offer some constructive advice. Instead, I thought I'd ping you about baking. I made some cookies last nite - real good - but I am finding that the gluten-free flours can be a bit sandy/grainy/gritty. I am wondering if I am simply not using the...
  16. Even if this did work it doesn't have anything to do with celiac disease. This treatment supposedly eliminates allergies. Celiac disease is not an allergy.
  17. Wow! You have seriously misread my post and my intent. I did not ridicule you - I disagreed with your actions (and anyone else who choses to ignore a doctor's reasonable suggestion). As far as tone let me say this: I have personal experience with a family member who apparently ignored a doctor's advice. It cost him his life. I make no apology for expressing...
  18. "Can't we all just get along?" Moderation in all things is great advice. I'd like family members to be more sensitive and I don't feel that those who suffer with special conditions should get angered when the world doesn't stop just for them. No one should have to listen to a discussion of bowel movements during a meal - that is simply common courtesy...
  19. It's up to the individual, for sure. Best of luck to all who ignore their doctor and instead trust their own instincts. I urge people to listen to their doctors. It is NOT common sense to avoid testing that a medical professional recommends because your own layman's common sense or a community forum tells you different. When it comes to your health you can...
  20. Please don't be offended by my well-meaning response. Mood swings and unexplained irritability are hallmark symptoms of bipolar disorder. I have some experience with this and the way you are describing this really does sound like bipolar disorder - although I am not trying to diagnose you. Do yourself a favor and read up a bit on it to see if anything...
  21. I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy done on same day - I think most people do the same. So I 'cleaned' out my intestine for the two days previous. My biopsy results were positive even after the 'cleansing' so this is not an issue in any way. You can't 'clean' away damage to the mucosal layer of your duodenum. If we could I suppose we wouldn't need this diet...
  22. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
  23. Pei Wei Asian Diner has a gluten-free menu and they do not add MSG.
  24. Nominated for Post of the Year (comedy)
  25. And if you don't feel like spending money on books just try your library! I found a ton of books at my main branch and even at the smaller local branches. I found the dietician to be quite helpful but I would speak to him/her BEFORE your appointment to make sure they are prepared. I found mine to be helpful but there is no way that I would have spent...
