ARCHIVED Group Letter to Dr. Fine

I believe this is on-topic. I am reading an interesting article in the NY Times regarding brain damage in the NFL and there is the following quote regarding peer reviewed studies: Dr. Ira Casson . . . said he could have no reaction until the McHale case and other recent C.T.E. findings appear in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
  2. I am very sorry to hear that you may have Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). This is different than Lynch syndrome. Your doctor is wise to have you screened very thoroughly but you should know that the condition is genetic and there is a genetic test available to determine if you have inherited the gene and whether you may pass it on to your children:...
  3. "I asked if I would need more celiac blood work to see if the tTG antibody was coming down. He said that they really don't change and a repeat biopsy in a year or two would let him know. He said it would be too early now to see any changes, that I needed to give the diet at least 6 months, and if I was eating balanced that the iron and other things would...

ARCHIVED Group Letter to Dr. Fine

Has Dr. Fine responded yet? I don't feel that forum members should be monitoring the appropriateness of other members' posts - that's why we have moderators. Many here are interested in hearing Neesee and I don't feel her post was out of line in the least. We all understand that many people have not been diagnosed in the past because their doctors...
  5. Thanks Holly. I'll try this mix someday - as soon as I see it on sale for a decent price at Sprouts! I am finding it difficult to spend on these mixes - especially when I am going to douse my pancakes with homemade pineapple syrup. I can make some pancakes that are pretty good and I think my ingredients almost match up with Pamela's: brown rice flour...
  6. This doesn't seem fair to Trader Joe's to me. I don't believe they are breaking any rules by stating that something is gluten free even though it might be made on equipment that also processes wheat.
  7. The blood work usually comes back quick and the pathology takes longer. It takes longer and can be 'complicated' because pathology is somewhat subjective. That is, they are actually looking at a physical sample of tissue under a microscope, etc. and so the pathologist has to make some judgements. (That's in addition to some objective counts that they make...
  8. My gastro also advised that we would re-do the bloodwork every 6 months. I'm also unsure about how long this will go on. My intern also suggested a follow-up bone density scan at 2 or 3 years to check on progress of osteopenia. Since I am asymptomatic I think it is really important to get the bloodwork done. This will tell you if you need to be more vigilant...
  9. In case you're interested you can look at the shirt here: Open Original Shared Link Apparently some movie buff actually owns the shirt used in the movie and lists it at this site as memorabilia.
  10. I think that Xanax works quite well for anxiety - not sure that I can recommend it for depression. I use Xanax particularly for participatory anxiety; cases where I know I am going to feel anxious so I take it beforehand. I think Klonopin can be helpful in terms of getting a good night's sleep. You might consider Welbutrin for depression. Best of luck. Have...
  11. In that same article Dr. Fasano says: Celiac disease is an all-or-none proposition. If you go on a 99.9 percent gluten-free diet, that 0.1 percent is perceived by the immune system as something dangerous there. It can't distinguish between a crumb and an entire bread loaf. It's a different story with gluten sensitivity and allergy. Some people can't...
  12. Hi Gentleheart! I don't want to put words in the man's mouth but I can offer more. It looks as if they are different conditions because, per the doctor, celiac provokes an autoimmune response, allergy provokes an allergic response, and intolerance provokes an immune (as opposed to autoimmune)response. I don't believe his quotes indicate that one is merely...
  13. Well of course someone with celiac disease can not react outwardly! All silent celiacs - by definition - are eating sometimes quite large quantities of gluten, for sometimes years on end - without any outward symptoms. I am diagnosed celiac and I could not tell you - for the life of me - if I have eaten any wheat. I have no external symptoms now and never...
  14. Since you are going to see Dr. Fasano how about a quote from the man himself? "For all of them the basic [treatment] is a gluten-free diet. But the rules of engagement are different for where you are on the spectrum. That is why a proper diagnosis is extremely important. Celiac disease is an all-or-none proposition. If you go on a 99.9 percent gluten...
  15. I'm not sure if y'all are reading the original post. The poster has already tried going gluten free and it hasn't helped. He is losing faith in the Canadian medical system so he wanted opinions about going to the US - perhaps Mayo. To reply that he might not get results from Mayo so he should just try gluten free seems to be missing the point.
  16. I so agree with you. Members of my family have been misdiagnosed/undiagnosed with tragic results - that doesn't mean I go 'round devising my own cancer screening regimen. I have always and will always be in favor of healthy skepticism, as you suggest. Thanks for the shout out!
  17. Hi ycavaz: You don't need a diagnosis of celiac to go on a gluten free diet. However, do you think you have celiac disease? If you have cleiac disease then you should do more than just go on a gluten free diet. I read that advice here a lot - "try the gluten free diet, it can't hurt" - but when you are initially diagnosed with celiac disease you do more...
  18. I tried one here in Long Beach, CA about two months ago. In store they actually did have an allergan menu - although I see nothing online. Virtually every item listed wheat as an ingredient - other than the pad thai rice noodle bowl and plain old rice. For the pad thai bowls the shrimp is sauteed plain and the chicken is fried but uses a corn starch coating...

ARCHIVED Group Letter to Dr. Fine

Well said, neesee! It is those who express the minority viewpoint on this forum (defense of traditional western medicine) who need the freedom to express themselves without fear of badgering, not those who express the majority opinion.

ARCHIVED Group Letter to Dr. Fine

It's quite obvious that this will never be settled. If Fine's defenders don't care that he has not responded to this point, then I, as a Fine detractor, refuse to read or acknowledge any reply that he might eventually provide. I don't care one whit if he ever does respond. After reading all of these heartfelt responses - and fidster's kind response -...

Sorry, fidster - I did not mean to make an ^SS of U.
  22. Not to wade into political territory - but that's a load of bull! Perhaps you might want to qualify that in some way? "In fiscal year 2000, the federal government spent $17 billion on the National Institutes of Health, the agency primarily responsible for medical research. President Bush is seeking to double that figure by 2003."
  23. How about chocolate meringue cookies?
  24. You might want to ask specifically for Vietnamese or Thai style rice-based spring roll wrappers. Referring to them as won ton wrappers or egg rolls might confuse some people. They are dry in the Asian market where I shop, and were located near the other dried rice noodles. Good luck!
  25. Seems like an Italian theme. How about: zabaglione sorbet/gelato/ice Limoncello rice pudding gluten-free biscotti/espresso
