Hi Laurie! I thought I would respond because you seem confused by my post. I referred to customers of Dr. Fine's company as 'patients' because when I receive 'services' from my doctor they refer to me as a patient. I think you are correct, however, in that customers is more accurate in this case because, as we both know, Dr. Fine doesn't do any diagnosing...

Just to be clear - Gentleheart wants to give Dr. Fine a few more weeks to reply to us before personally attempting to contact him in some fashion. After all of that and at that point I believe she intended on giving us an update. I believe everyone deserved an update right now - it's already been three weeks. I am hoping that Dr. Fine will respond to a certified...

I corresponded with the originator of this group letter and as of January 17th we have not yet heard from Dr. Fine. Our letter was sent certified and reached his office prior to the Christmas holiday. I want to again thank Gentleheart for her efforts. It was my opinion that the group that initially worked on this letter deserved an update - Gentleheart disagreed...

I had great results just the other night using chicken fat and sweet rice flour. I think the sweet rice flour actually works better as a thickener than the old standby wheat flour. I was really surprised at how good the resulting gravy turned out.

ARCHIVED Celiac's Vs Gluten Intolerance Diff?
sbj replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So Eric - did we answer your question? -
Hi lucy_Q: I'm not in Portland but I have Kaiser in Southern California and they have been awesome. My gastro performed an endoscopy and didn't see anything wrong. Pathology saw celiac sprue so my gastro had me do the celiac panel. It confirmed celiac so he had me do the genetic test through Prometheus. That confirmed that I had the genes. I told my intern...

I'm sorry to say that nothing worked. I tried eating the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) without the toast. Didn't work. Tried Pepto - didn't work. Tried Immodium - didn't work. After 3 days I was nervous but it stopped on day 5. I believe that if diarrhea continues for more than a week you should get your butt in and see your doctor, but a...

ARCHIVED Strawberry Chex
sbj replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well I disagree! I will keep eating Rice Chex even without the label. I eat all sorts of gluten-free products that aren't labeled as such. If the food does not contain gluten ingredients then I will give it a go. If in future I still test positive via blood test then I will consider cutting out the 'made in a wheat facility'-type products. You have to realize... -
I'm not sure I understand? You probably picked up a stomach virus. Per my doctor, there's a bad one going around this year. I had tummy issues for four straight days. But this had nothing to do with gluten, it was a stomach virus. I hope you feel better soon!

I have yet to find any bread that tastes remotely better than gluten containing rolls. I'll keep searching and try new ones as I can afford them, but I'm a bit tired of spending my $6 only to find that the bread is a sore disappointment. You may not be aware of my story but when you say of cancer that they treat you like "it's only a matter of time before...

I am with you Tallforagirl. This has been tough for me because I don't feel any benefit at all from this diet! I didn't have issues to begin with and sticking to the diet is not helping with my tummy issues cause I didn't have any! Half the time I feel thankful that this was discovered, the other half I find myself wishing they hadn't found this while looking...

ARCHIVED Flour Substitutions
sbj replied to Passygassy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Not sure if you're still reading, Christa, but check out your local Asian market for tapioca starch/flour. I picked some up last night - ~ 14 oz box for 99 cents. Also got some rice noodles ($1.49), sweet rice flour (99 cents), and vietnamese crepe mix ($1.29). -
ARCHIVED I Really Need To Lose Some Weight
sbj replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You can do it! We're all rooting for you. I'm trying to drop some weight, too. Food for thought. Granola can be high in fat and calories. Same thing with trail mix. Yogurt can be loaded with sugar. So be careful with those. One ounce of cheese in the morning should be enough and try to find 2% or low fat cheese. Portion control is vital! Eat the foods... -

ARCHIVED Celiac's Vs Gluten Intolerance Diff?

Celiac disease and gluten intolerance are different. Most here will disagree with me but I will pipe in with my two cents anywho: Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED From A Newbie
sbj replied to heatherjane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would suggest you NOT look at this as a drastic life change! It's not drastic at all - you simply can't eat one type of food anymore. Only one little type; it doesn't have to be a big deal. You still get to eat meat, veggies, fruit, dairy, rice, potatos, etc. You still get to eat out: think Mexican, Thai, Wendy's, Pei Wei. As far as tips for eating... -
ARCHIVED Scared To Death Of My Biopsy
sbj replied to GFinBC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Marianne. Try not to be scared - your doctor will make sure you are perfectly comfortable throughout the whole ordeal. Something to be sware of: you have a say in the type of sedation used! "Deep sedation or general anesthesia should be considered for patients who have been difficult to manage with moderate sedation and are anticipated to be poorly... -

ARCHIVED Questions Regarding Blood Tests And Celiac Diet
sbj replied to Hardeep's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you considered illnesses other than celiac disease? I was just reaidng another thread about ulcerative colitis - you have some of the symptoms: The clinical presentation of ulcerative colitis depends on the extent of the disease process. Patients usually present with diarrhea mixed with blood and mucus, of gradual onset. They also may have signs... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free For 2.5 Years, Yet No Change
sbj replied to mtnjen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What treatment have you tried for your Ulcerative Colitis? I took a quick look at a Wikepedia page: Open Original Shared Link And there are just so many things there to try: Drug therapy: lots of different drugs to try (Mesalazine, mesalamine (Asacol, Pentasa, Salofalk, Lialda, Ipocol and Mezavant), Sulfasalazine, Balsalazide, Olsalazine, Cortisone... -
That's true! Ranger, the weight loss seems a bit scary so there could be a deficiency there that might benefit from quick action - a supplement from your doctor. On the other hand, there is no absolute requirement to do any of these tests, and most deficiencies resolve themselves after being on the gluten-free diet for a while. It's your call on what...

That's sort of why I wrote "you might consider" Must every well-intentioned suggestion come with a disclaimer?
-
If you haven't already done so, you might consider a complete blood count, vitamin and mineral testing, and a bone density scan. These are tests that are recommended for those newly diagnosed with celiac disease.

ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Banana Waffles
sbj replied to wschmucks's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had the banana waffles but I tried Trader Joe's other gluten-free waffles (buttermilk?) and they were terrible! I've also tried Vans gluten-free waffles and didn't think much of them, either. I am finding it easiest and best to simply make my own pancakes and syrup at home. Regarding the "processed on the SAME equipment as eggs, soy, and WHEAT... -
ARCHIVED Another Ideas For Glutening Post...
sbj replied to wsieving's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wonder if this is not something that is due to a glutening and perhaps this is not related to celiac? If I recall correctly, your young one at some point began to see her issues resolve even while she was still having gluten. And, if I recall correctly, you were not able to get a celiac diagnosis. Perhaps something else is the culprit?
