				ARCHIVED Pregnancy And Medication
Mother of Jibril replied to GlutenGalAZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is a good database for information about medications: Open Original Shared Link From what I understand, there are basically five classes of drugs during pregnancy... Class A: proven to be safe Class B: likely to be safe Class C: should only be taken if the benefit outweighs the risk Class D: known danger to the fetus Class X: incompatible... -

				ARCHIVED Starbucks Anyone?
Mother of Jibril replied to I hate gluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've read that the only drinks at Starbucks that are NOT safe (in terms of gluten) are the frapuccinos and the Vivanno protein drinks. It's best if you ask them to use a clean pitcher and clean the steam wand before they make your drink. Personally, I think coffee drinks with soy milk are good! Unlike some other coffee shops I've been to, Starbucks is... -

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac? Any Advice?
Mother of Jibril replied to Bookie53463's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're intolerant to casein, Lactaid won't help. Casein is in ALL dairy products, including cheese. Incidentally, cheese has very little lactose... so there's no need for lactase (in Lactaid). It is quite possible that the balance of flora in your intestines is off. There's plenty of advice on this forum if you want to search for "candida." Honestly... -

				ARCHIVED Lipomatosis Since Going Gluten-free
Mother of Jibril replied to ericjourney's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't think this is being caused by the gluten-free diet. My guess is that you have another autoimmune disorder or that some drug is temporarily causing your body to attack itself. During my 20s I developed several dermatofibromas... which are small, benign tumors that look like permanent mosquito bites. It's common to have one on your lower leg... -

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac? Any Advice?
Mother of Jibril replied to Bookie53463's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ttg is very specific for celiac disease. With such high numbers you really NEED to be on the gluten-free diet. You might not feel any different, but if you don't stick with it you're setting yourself up for some pretty scary health problems... more autoimmune disorders, cancer, etc... The first idea that popped into my mind is that you have more than... -

				ARCHIVED Hypothyroidism; High Cholesterol
Mother of Jibril replied to PinkLady's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Another indication of a malfunctioning pituitary gland is when your TSH is normal (between 0.3 and 3.0), but your T4 and T3 are below normal. If your TSH and your T4 are fine but your T3 is too low, that means your body is having a problem converting T4 (the storage hormone) to T3 (the active hormone). Selenium can help. You could also try one of the alternative... -

ARCHIVED Getting Family On Board With Gluten Free Diet
Mother of Jibril replied to rayandme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Another perspective on some of these things... if you have any cuts or open sores, I would be careful about applying products with gluten (bandaids, lotion, acne medications, etc...), especially if you're really sensitive. Some people have no problem, some people do. You also need to be careful if you have little kids who are sensitive to gluten.... -

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Would Love Some Guidance!
Mother of Jibril replied to Klauren's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
B-12 has nothing to do with hemoglobin It's not part of the standard CBC/CMP, so you'd have to ask for that test separately. I think it's fine to take your kids' gluten-free gummy vitamins if you want to It won't hurt... you just might need to take more than the recommended amount. Vitamin D is quite safe to take on your own. You can check... -

ARCHIVED 19 Month Old Being Tested For Celiacs Disease
Mother of Jibril replied to sparklette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the group! I found this website to be helpful: Open Original Shared Link It has lots of links to other articles... very thorough and scientific. My son is intolerant to casein (the protein in cow's milk), not just lactose. It's possible that your daughter could have celiac disease... or cow's milk intolerance... or both! You'll figure... -

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Would Love Some Guidance!
Mother of Jibril replied to Klauren's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it's energy you're looking for, some supplements could make a big difference... there are other kinds of anemia besides just iron-deficiency. If you don't mind another blood test you could have your B-12, ferritin, and vitamin D levels checked. Check your TSH too! If your thyroid is not making enough hormones that can cause fatigue. Some celiacs are... -

ARCHIVED Child With Neg Celiac Blood Work, But Doing Well On Diet.
Mother of Jibril replied to I hate gluten's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son gets eczema from all dairy products (and corn) too! I refuse to try gluten. Maybe this year we'll get him tested for allergies... I don't know if anything will show up. Intolerances and allergies work differently. Nothing showed up on my allergy test. At least now we know what the problem is and can keep him away from those foods. I'm sorry... -

ARCHIVED High Fructose Corn Syrup Also High- Mercury?
Mother of Jibril replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can't say for sure that companies aren't doing strange things to pure maple syrup... but it doesn't require any special processing. Just boiling to reduce the amount of water. I have an uncle in Wisconsin who lives out in the country... he like to tap the maple trees in his yard and make his own maple syrup from scratch. Wow! The syrup is so GOOD... -

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Would Love Some Guidance!
Mother of Jibril replied to Klauren's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I like to buy chocolate that's at least 65% cocoa, which limits the amount of sugar (and casein from milk) and maximizes the antioxidants. Plus I love the taste The brands I buy the most often are Endangered Species (which has the best 90% dark chocolate I've ever eaten), Chocolove, Equal Exchange, and Green & Blacks. There's an ethnic grocery store... -

				ARCHIVED Blooming Flowers
Mother of Jibril replied to harp1's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I like to grow edible flowers in my container garden (which is the only place they're safe from the deer)... violas, rose geraniums, marigolds, and my favorite... starflowers (borage). I love how the leaves and stems are all fuzzy and then when the star-shaped flowers appear they're such a striking blue color My daughter thinks it's fun to pick flowers... -

ARCHIVED Child With Neg Celiac Blood Work, But Doing Well On Diet.
Mother of Jibril replied to I hate gluten's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know just what you mean The beauty of this... once you get past the anger (which is a totally legitimate feeling)... is that the gluten-free diet is a healthy one. You might find yourself in better physical and mental health than the rest of your family... and if you're really blessed they might follow your lead! Plus, you'll feel empowered to take... -

				ARCHIVED Toothpaste
Mother of Jibril replied to mimommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some people are allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate. It's not a gluten ingredient, but it seems to be a fairly common allergen and it's in a LOT of toothpaste brands. -

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Would Love Some Guidance!
Mother of Jibril replied to Klauren's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the group! No need to be worried about posting... no question is a stupid question! I suspect I've had problems with gluten my entire life. I definitely had symptoms of Hashimoto's by the time I was a teenager (a disorder that is more common in people with celiac and vice versa)... but nobody ever thought to test my TSH until last year... -

				ARCHIVED Very Confused
Mother of Jibril replied to Joel M's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Good advice. I was just reading this week about how twitches are caused by an imbalance of magnesium, calcium, and potassium... the electrolytes needed for proper muscle function. It's definitely possible to have malabsorption without full-blown celiac disease, but have you ever been tested? It might be worth it to do this before you get back on the... -

ARCHIVED Getting Family On Board With Gluten Free Diet
Mother of Jibril replied to rayandme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm finding that my husband is actually pretty supportive... but sometimes it takes a while for the information to sink in. We had a discussion this week about how I can't eat the peanut butter if he puts some on his gluteny bread and then dips the knife back into the container. At first he made a skeptical noise and said, "Oh that little bit isn't going... -

ARCHIVED How Do You Get Your Whole Grains In?
Mother of Jibril replied to clnewberry1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just a thought... but grains of any kind are not necessary for a healthy diet. If you're looking for sources of fiber, here are some good ones: - dried fruit (prunes) - oranges - tree fruits with skin (apples, pears) - berries (especially raspberries) - nuts - seeds - avocado - artichokes, broccoli - BEANS and peas -

ARCHIVED Testing For Other Autoimmune Disorders
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for your supportive message I really appreciate hearing about your own experience. Interesting that you mention talking to a high-risk OB. I did talk to a perinatologist back in August. He basically said, "Well... we could test you for some things if you want to ... but it's expensive and you still might not get any answers... and I don't... -

				ARCHIVED More Results From Enterolab
Mother of Jibril replied to coldnight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know too much about Chron's but is it possible the biopsy was wrong? I know the biopsies for celiac are notoriously unreliable. You have to take enough samples from the right areas (since the damage can be patchy) and have them read by a good pathologist who suspects celiac disease. -

				ARCHIVED More Results From Enterolab
Mother of Jibril replied to coldnight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you ever been checked for other autoimmune disorders that affect the intestines like Chron's or ulcerative colitis? Clearly you have some kind of problem with gluten... -

ARCHIVED Troubles Getting Pregnant With Celiac... Please Help!
Mother of Jibril replied to Kelly9's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Welcome! A really good resource is the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Wechsler. You can use it to figure out how long your cycle is, whether you're ovulating, if you're making enough "high quality fluid" for successful fertilization... or maybe you're fine and the problem is with your husband. If you track your cycles for a few months... -
It could also be an allergy... my daughter is allergic to pumpkin seeds. Have you tried other seeds? I understand if you're nervous about it but pumpkin seeds are biologically very different from things like sunflower seeds or sesame seeds.
