ARCHIVED New To Wheat Free Life
Mother of Jibril replied to SantaDude's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to eat a LOT of dairy too (I'm from Wisconsin). I miss the cheese Enterolab does a stool test for casein sensitivity. The cheapest thing (and most reliable) is to try an elimination diet. Cut it out of your diet completely for two weeks and then "challenge" it by eating a reasonable amount for a few days (don't go crazy... 2-3 servings a day... -

				ARCHIVED Introducing Babies To Gluten
Mother of Jibril replied to HiDee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Do you have any links to articles about this? Biologically, I just cannot imagine why there should be a certain "window of opportunity" to introduce gluten. That's not how hypersensitivity disorders work. Plus... who were the people that waited until after 6 months to introduce gluten? Probably the ones with a family history of hypersensitivity... -

ARCHIVED I Don't Really Understand Casein Intolerance
Mother of Jibril replied to RollingAlong's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Wow... good question!! You might try ELISA testing for IgG sensitivity. Honestly, I think there's just SO much research that needs to be done on food allergies and intolerances, especially concerning the role they play in autoimmune disorders. I found this article that was published just last year: Open Original Shared Link I came across... -

				ARCHIVED Iron Supplements
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well... a bit of good news. I finally found someone (my PCP's office) to test my ferritin. I should have the results by Tuesday. I went in this morning. The nurse was polite, but seemed to think I was a bit crazy. She asked again what I wanted to test (ferritin!) and insisted that we do a CBC too. Whatever. She said, "Well, I guess some people... -

ARCHIVED Do I Have Candida Or celiac disease?
Mother of Jibril replied to Shallyssa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think it's important to be clear about the difference between celiac disease and "candida." Celiac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gluten (a delayed hypersensitivity) that results in damage to your intestines. The blood test looks for antibodies like anti-gliaden, endomesial antibodies (EMA) and tissue transglutaminase (ttg). Some are more specific... -

ARCHIVED Fairly New At This And Very Frustrated Right Now
Mother of Jibril replied to Sin3str0's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think it's good to keep an open mind about multiple causes... maybe you DO have a cold, or you're intolerant to corn, dairy, etc... It takes time to figure these things out My suggestion is to forget about the grains for a while and focus on whole, nourishing foods: fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and a moderate amount of meat. Unless there were... -

				ARCHIVED Iron Supplements
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well that's a good question too. My mom has diabetes. I haven't fainted in a while (I did as a teenager)... but I always tested negative for gestational diabetes. It's definitely something to ask the endocrinologist about. I notice the dizziness most often when I get out of bed. It was really bad while I was pregnant! I could hardly make it to the bathroom... -

				ARCHIVED Iron Supplements
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm taking 100mcg of Synthroid. I'm not really keen to try Armour because I stopped eating pork products fifteen years ago for religious reasons. I'd do it if I had no other choice... my preference would be to try synthetic T3. We'll see what the endocrinologist says next month. I am the one paying for the test! And I don't think it's very expensive... -

				ARCHIVED Iron Supplements
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I haven't hit menopause yet... and even though I've tested borderline anemic many times, NOBODY has ever checked my ferritin level. Thanks for the comparison between you and your friend! I wish I could get a referral to a good PCP... one that would actually TEST FOR THINGS instead of guessing. Good note about the T4 to T3 conversion... -

				ARCHIVED Iron Supplements
Mother of Jibril posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been having some problems with fatigue and dizziness for the last few weeks. I really noticed it on Wednesday... I took a group of students on a tour of the art museum, and we were standing around for about an hour. I felt SO tired! Not tired like I needed to sleep... tired like I needed to sit down or lay down. I haven't felt like that since I was... -

ARCHIVED Trying To Make Sense Of Celiac Blood Test
Mother of Jibril replied to Keri's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did you also have your total IgA tested? If that's low, that's could explain the different results on the two different types of anti-gliaden antibodies. Tissue transglutaminase (Ttg) and endomysial antibodies (EMA) are more specific for celiac disease than anti-gliaden, but a positive result on any of the tests in a celiac panel indicates that you have... -

				ARCHIVED Breastfeeding
Mother of Jibril replied to 2005mom2008's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the group! My son was exclusively breastfed for the first six months. During that time we figured out that he's extremely sensitive to casein... the amount that was getting through my breastmilk was enough to give him colic, diarrhea, projectile vomiting, and make his intestines bleed Once I took dairy products out of MY diet he recovered... -

				ARCHIVED Blood Red Blisters...?
Mother of Jibril replied to GravStars's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I get tiny little bumps on my hands (and arms if it gets bad enough) when I've been glutened. I had a biopsy and my dermatologist called it "acute dermatitis." It started showing up after I went gluten-free... the closest explanation I've seen is an "id reaction" (also known as "autoeczema"). Whatever you call it... I agree about the gut/skin connection... -

				ARCHIVED Blood Red Blisters...?
Mother of Jibril replied to GravStars's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
One type of psoriasis (guttate) produces tiny blisters that look like drops of blood. I just started reading a book that might appeal to you: "Healing Psoriasis: The Natural Alternative." It talks about healing your skin from the inside out by healing your intestines. -

ARCHIVED Troubles Getting Pregnant With Celiac... Please Help!
Mother of Jibril replied to Kelly9's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You can safely take a lot more vitamin D than 1,000 iu per day... I take 4,000. This website (www.vitamindcouncil.org) has some excellent advice backed up by research. It's amazing how many things in your body can be affected by a vitamin D deficiency! -

ARCHIVED So Many Problems, Yet No Doctor Will Listen!
Mother of Jibril replied to ptkds's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That's interesting. Since I'm still breastfeeding I'm taking a prenatal vitamin... it has the maximum recommended folate (800 mcg). Maybe I'll go to the walk-in clinic tomorrow! -

ARCHIVED So Many Problems, Yet No Doctor Will Listen!
Mother of Jibril replied to ptkds's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
How did you figure out that you were anemic if it was masked by inflammation? I've been having some fatigue and dizziness lately... and I've been borderline anemic for years. -

				ARCHIVED Meals On The Go
Mother of Jibril replied to mindiloo's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I find that healthy "snacks" can make a pretty satisfying meal... it doesn't have to be elaborate! Here are some ideas that I use a lot... Dried fruit (prunes, apricots) Nuts (avoid the "roasted" ones) Apples Oranges Grapes Broccoli Cherry tomatoes Pea pods Slices of bell pepper Celery sticks Applesauce Fruit leather Carrots... -

				ARCHIVED Understanding Genetic Associations
Mother of Jibril replied to gfb1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Very interesting! You're certainly a welcome addition to this forum Actually, I didn't disagree with anything you said about genetics... and clearly you're the expert on this (my PhD is in a completely different field). My concern was that you were painting "celiacs" with an overly broad brush. Definitely there are lots of doctors and patients who... -

ARCHIVED Legal Recourse For People Falsely Proclaiming Items To Be Gluten Free
Mother of Jibril replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I assume you were thinking of kosher food? This is actually a very interesting comparison! My understanding is that the kosher symbols are regulated by Jewish organizations which actually send representatives to factories to check out their manufacturing processes. I know someone who works as an engineer for Nestle and he said that a rabbi comes... -

				ARCHIVED Iodine And Thyroid Disease
Mother of Jibril replied to DebNC84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
After doing a lot of reading and hearing about the experiences of other people, I've been coming to the conclusion that there are two different types of thyroid problems (kind of like type I and type II diabetes). In one type, your thyroid has been partially or completely destroyed... no matter how hard you push it (with TSH, iodine, other supplements, etc... -

				ARCHIVED B12 And Celiacs
Mother of Jibril replied to I hate gluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It would really be a good idea to get your level checked and track what happens over the next few months (if you are deficient). People with pernicious anemia... another autoimmune disorder that tends to cluster with celiac disease... are unable to absorb B-12 through their stomach. From what I understand there are two solutions to this: either take it... -

ARCHIVED What Are The Proper Tests Including Genetic Testing
Mother of Jibril replied to clnewberry1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Confusion is normal And there is a lot of gray area... My mom has had a lot of health problems... endometriosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, migraines, etc... Some of these are known to be more common in people with celiac disease. So... maybe she had it all along. Hard to say. Nobody thought to check... -

ARCHIVED What Are The Proper Tests Including Genetic Testing
Mother of Jibril replied to clnewberry1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Crystal, I had genetic testing done. A doctor can order it, but a lot won't. I paid for mine out of my own pocket. One important thing to note... it can't give you a diagnosis of celiac (or any other disease, for that matter). It just tells you what you're "predisposed" to. In my case, this really explained a lot of things in my family... diabetes... -

				ARCHIVED Acute Allergic Reaction
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for that note! I have an appointment with an allergist tomorrow and I'm definitely going to ask about blood testing. I really NEED to figure out what's causing this
