  1. Here's what I've been eating every morning for the last two months... - Plain yogurt (give soy yogurt a try... it's surprisingly good) - Shredded unsweetened coconut - Fruit (slices of banana, berries, cherries, etc...) - A packet of stevia (also good: maple syrup, cane syrup, honey) Very satisfying! The coconut adds some calories... the...
  2. I really appreciate it! I just sent you a PM. Did you check the chocolate for gluten ingredients? Sometimes it has traces of wheat. I recently had to stop eating chocolate because of the peanut/tree nut contamination. I also found out that chocolate is processed with aspergillus mold <sigh> As much as I LOVE chocolate I'm feeling...
  3. IMO, there's no coming back from true Addison's disease. The NIH says that by the time a person is diagnosed with Addison's "at least 90% of the adrenal cortex has been destroyed." Open Original Shared Link The solution is to take a physiological dose of steroids (hydrocortisone) and replace what your body is supposed to be making on its own. A gluten...
  4. Cool! I look forward to reading your results. DQ7.3 is associated with narcolepsy... so I'll be very curious to see if that turns up
  5. That was me What made you (or a doctor?) suspect that your daughter has mastocytosis? Last month I had my first anaphylactic reaction. Terrible itching, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, severe drop in blood pressure... thankfully I was still able to breathe and call 911 (I was home alone with my two small children). It turns out I'm allergic to peanuts...
  6. Here's an article from Scott Adams (on celiac.com) about other autoimmune disorders that have been linked to celiac disease: https://www.celiac.com/articles/108/1/Celia...ease/Page1.html Here's an overview of HLA-DQ genetics: Open Original Shared Link You can also look at the signatures of people like "ravenwoodglass" to get an idea of the widespread...
  7. Wow... whoever suggested the endoscopy must not understand anything about mast cell disorders! Good for you for asking questions and being proactive Honestly, I don't see any reason to do the endoscopy. Whether your daughter has celiac disease or gluten intolerance, the treatment is exactly the same... a 100% gluten-free diet. This is one case where...
  8. There have been some pretty heated threads about this Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that results in damage to the villi in your intestines. The cure is to stop eating gluten... pretty neat, because this is the only autoimmune disorder with a cure! And the cure is free! No drugs, no surgeries. Celiac disease is one form of gluten intolerance...
  9. Off the top of my head, two members of this board that are IgA deficient are "lizard00" and "julirama723"... you might want to look at their profiles or send them a PM. If you are IgA deficient, it won't help to repeat the blood test Your symptoms do sound right on the mark though! Thyroid disorders and vitamin deficiencies are more common in celiacs...
  10. My pleasure! It's wonderful to hear that you're having such a positive response to the gluten-free diet! Depression, anxiety, and migraines are common symptoms associated with the DQ1 subtypes (DQ5 and DQ6)... all signs of neurological damage. Other symptoms can include ataxia (poor balance), vertigo, peripheral neuropathy (tingling/numbness...
  11. Is it your total IgA that's too low? In that case, you could be half-dead and still get a negative result on the blood test. Would your doctor be willing to do an endoscopy or refer you to a GI specialist? I've read quite a few cases where people had a negative blood test and a positive endoscopy... that's another way to get a diagnosis of celiac disease...
  12. Franz Marc is one of my favorites: Open Original Shared Link If you're ever in Munich... make a trip to the Lenbachhaus! It's a fantastic little museum dedicated to the "Blue Riders" (the most famous being Wassily Kandinsky). They have an extensive collection of Marc's paintings... I especially love how he portrayed animals. If you like Edvard...
  13. Maile gave you good advice DQ2 (especially the specific one you have, *0201) is the most likely gene to cause celiac disease. I agree that you have the symptoms... how do you feel on the new diet? I'm kind of in the same boat as you. All arrows point to "YES" I do have celiac disease, but I haven't been able to get an official diagnosis (long...
  14. This is a lovely treat if you're craving ice cream - One can of full-fat coconut milk - Frozen fruit (peaches, blueberries, strawberries, mangoes, etc... a fresh banana is nice too, but you need frozen fruit to make it like ice cream) - A bit of sweetener as desired (maple syrup, stevia, honey) Blend at low speed until the frozen fruit is all...
  15. If your son is eating foods with gluten I think it's a great idea to get a blood test for celiac disease! Get a copy of the results... even if the test comes back "negative" it's still a good idea to try the gluten-free diet if there's any evidence of antibodies to gluten. My son also has a severe intolerance to casein (and corn). By the time he was...
  16. I've been pregnant three times and lost one child (Jibril) at 17 weeks. I never had pre-eclampsia, but I'm positive that my loss was related to undiagnosed hypothyroidism and celiac disease. The tricky thing is that a lot of OB/GYNs have NO CLUE about autoimmune disorders (which is ironic, since pregnancy can be one of the triggers). They think you can...
  17. I'm really sorry you're having such a hard time! I never had allergies either (tested negative six months ago), but they CAN develop in adults. Last month I had an anaphylactic reaction to a soup with too many members of the "umbelliferae" family (celery, parsnips, carrots, parsley). Intolerances don't show up on skin tests, but the symptoms can really...
  18. 2007 was my year from Hell What really helps me... aside from the gluten-free diet... is taking vitamin D supplements. 4,000iu per day (from cod liver oil). Wow!! I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt this emotionally stable. It must have been before puberty. I still have plenty of stress in my life... I just don't feel the need to...
  19. It sounds like your daughter is not getting much gluten right now. Which is fine! It just means that a blood test is going to be useless. You could do a genetic test if you want to determine her risk. My son is extremely intolerant to all dairy products and corn (and I assume gluten too... I won't even try it). These foods give him eczema, diarrhea/constipation...
  20. It makes sense to check your thyroid then Any PCP can do it... just a simple blood test. Hashimoto's is known to cluster with celiac disease.
  21. Two thoughts... 1. Have you had your thyroid checked? Hypothyroidism can make it difficult or impossible to lose weight. TSH is the standard test. It's also good to check your free T4, free T3, and thyroid antibodies if your doctor is willing... a lot of them think TSH is enough. 2. Are you eating enough calories? If your body thinks you're starving...
  22. I was just reading this morning about vitamin A deficiency... which can cause dry eyes, dry skin, poor night vision, sensitivity to bright lights, and inflammation in your eyes. Interesting! Celiac disease is associated with all kinds of vitamin and mineral deficiencies due to malabsorption. Some foods that can increase your intake of vitamin A: cod...
  23. This is great advice! The one thing I want to add is that the numbers for a "positive" result are set pretty high... you can wrack up some serious damage on the way to a positive result. There's a lot of gray area between positive and negative. A lot of doctors and patients blow it off because they think the gluten-free diet will be "too hard." ...
  24. Is there anything you started eating a lot more of when you went gluten-free? For me, that was corn... and it gives me the same kind of abdominal pain as gluten The most common foods that cause problems for people (intolerances) include dairy, corn, soy, grains in general, and nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant). An elimination...
  25. Apparently, if you have a leaky gut the color can bleed out of your intestines into your blood and urine (where you really notice it). Healthy intestines shouldn't do that Beets give me bright pink urine! Or at least they used to... I haven't tried it in a while.
