I know what you mean about those thyroid websites I found out I have hypothyroidism back in August. I started taking 100mcg of Synthroid and I'm still on the same dose. My numbers are back to normal and I feel pretty good. I had an ultrasound that showed a goiter (but no nodules, so that's good news!) and I saw an endocrinologist who wanted to run...

				ARCHIVED Door County, Wisconsin
Mother of Jibril replied to foodiegurl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Wow... obviously I'm not from a "classy" part of Wisconsin. Good luck with your trip to tourist-land. -

				ARCHIVED Menses & Gluten Intolerance/allergy
Mother of Jibril replied to Desy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the group! I suffered from very heavy, crampy periods for years It's possible that gluten is making the situation worse, but there are other things (like endometriosis) that can cause those symptoms too. Incidentally, I recently found out that the uterus has a pretty high concentration of mast cells, which are involved not only in... -

				ARCHIVED Door County, Wisconsin
Mother of Jibril replied to foodiegurl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Sorry I don't have any restaurant suggestions... just wanted to put in my two cents about Wisconsin (which is where I grew up, although I've never been to Door County). For a celiac... especially if you're a person like me who doesn't drink alcohol or eat cheese... the food situation in Wisconsin is generally BAD. Have you thought about finding a cabin... -

ARCHIVED Digestive Prob Other Than celiac disease
Mother of Jibril replied to debmidge's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My main thought would be that you're missing some kind of enzyme(s). There are lots of other digestive disorders besides celiac disease though... Chron's, various types of colitis, diverticulitis, giardia, Whipple's disease, IBS... I don't know how many of these (if any) would cause you to have undigested chunks of food in your stool. If you figure it... -

				ARCHIVED Elevated 5-hiaa
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for your insights! I did have a whole list of foods and medications to avoid for three days before the test (and during the test, obviously)... chocolate, bananas, pineapple, eggplant, walnuts, plums, tomatoes, avocado, plus ethanol (I don't drink, so no big deal), acetominophen, and cough syrups like Robitussin. I'm not too worried about the test... -

				ARCHIVED Itchy
Mother of Jibril replied to JBaby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My skin gets itchy just from taking a shower, especially a hot shower (which I LOVE, even though I know I shouldn't do it). Part of the problem is that it makes my skin extra dry... soap and shampoo make the situation even worse. -

				ARCHIVED Itchy
Mother of Jibril replied to JBaby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh right Hives are red spots, sometimes with a "wheal" that looks like a mosquito bite. They disappear quickly -- within minutes or hours -- and don't leave a scar. Here's one example: Open Original Shared Link -

				ARCHIVED Elevated 5-hiaa
Mother of Jibril posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Today I found out I have another autoimmune disorder... my immune system has been making antibodies to the IgE receptors on my mast cells, tricking them into releasing their contents. The symptoms are the same as any severe allergic reaction (hives, dizziness, vomiting, etc...), but the reaction is not caused by an external substance. Interesting. I'm... -

				ARCHIVED To Ttc Or Not?
Mother of Jibril replied to foodiegurl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Anne, I lost my second child (Jibril) at 17 weeks. At the time I didn't know that I had any autoimmune disorders... and I had a midwife/OB who refused to run any tests My third child was conceived about 6 months later and was born perfectly healthy with no complications during the pregnancy. At the time, my urge to have another child was SO STRONG... -

				ARCHIVED Itchy
Mother of Jibril replied to JBaby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do you ever get hives with that itchiness? If so, you might want to go to a dermatologist and ask about chronic urticaria. It's also possible that while you were still consuming gluten the number of mast cells in your GI system was depressed... now that your body is healing you're feeling the effects of the new and increased number of mast cells Histamine... -

				ARCHIVED Corn-free Gums?
Mother of Jibril replied to ruthla's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Guar gum is corn-free (it's from a tropical bean pod). It works the same as xantham gum and I think the substitution is 1:1... maybe someone else will know for sure. -

ARCHIVED Is It Just A Midwest Occurence ?
Mother of Jibril replied to burkev's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
To me it says that there's a huge market for different kinds of suppliers. For example... Glutino uses a lot of corn-based ingredients, so that doesn't work for me Namaste has mixes that are gluten-free, corn-free, dairy-free, and nut-free... perfect! BUT... it would be bad news for someone who can't tolerate rice. Thank goodness I can tolerate soy... -

ARCHIVED Digestion Effecting Mood? Was Cutting Out Grains A Proper Choice?
Mother of Jibril replied to Pyro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Pyro, You might try to get an appointment with a gastroenterologist. I've been having abdominal pain for over a year. Being gluten-free, corn-free, dairy-free (also nut-free for two months) helped a LOT, but the pain and constipation never completely went away. Like you, I also go through periods where I feel cranky and tired... in February I was... -

				ARCHIVED Interesting Gi Appointment Today
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Doctors
Thanks Patti The place I'm going will cancel your procedure if you don't have a driver... so I'll definitely find someone to go with me! I was just wondering how long they might have to wait. -
I've been having mild abdominal pain for over a year. Some things have helped (like the gluten-free diet!), but my allergist was running out of answers... so she referred me to a gastroenterologist. Fine by me. I probably should have seen one a long time ago. Anyway... I thought for sure he was going to tell me "IBS" and blow me off. Instead, he...

				ARCHIVED Seasonal Allergies Triggering Celiac
Mother of Jibril replied to JoD's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The appointment today was good! I've had a LOT of testing... celiac panels, urinalysis, stool analysis, chest x-ray... today the doctor suggested we do an endoscopy to look for mastocytosis (too many mast cells in my GI system). I know how frustrating it is when you're in pain and you just keep going from doctor to doctor looking for answers, but hang... -

				ARCHIVED Genetic Testing Results
Mother of Jibril replied to Bethe444's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's true that if you don't have DQ2 or DQ8 then your chances of having celiac disease are greatly reduced... but there's no way to be 100% sure. There are people on this board with DQ9, DQ7, etc... who have been officially diagnosed with celiac disease. Also, you could have problems with gluten that manifest in other ways. For example, the DQ1 subtypes... -

				ARCHIVED Test For Gluten Intolerance?
Mother of Jibril replied to rmducote's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could test for anti-gliaden (antibodies to gluten)... but why not just get the whole celiac panel? Antigliaden IgA Antigliaden IgG Tissue transglutaminase IgA Tissue transglutaminase IgG Endomesial antibodies (EMA) Total IgA You could also take your son to a dermatologist to find out if the rash is dermatitis herpetiformis. That involves taking... -

				ARCHIVED Still Living In Fear
Mother of Jibril replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jason, Celiac disease is the only autoimmune disorder where the cause is KNOWN. Pretty crazy, huh? In fact, there are lots of disorders that are only labeled as being "autoimmune" because they go into remission when you take steroids. Food might play a role... some people (like Dr. Fasano) think celiac disease is the root cause of autoimmune disorders... -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Experience Violent Dreams?
Mother of Jibril replied to msmini14's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I also have very vivid dreams, especially when I'm starting something new and my brain is working really hard. I've always had vivid dreams. When I was little I had recurring dreams about an alien spaceship landing in my front yard A few years ago I had a dream about witnessing an atomic blast... still trying to figure out what that one was about. It... -

ARCHIVED Complication With Dehydration Or Sjogren's?
Mother of Jibril replied to Woolygimp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah... I see. Did you know that one of the symptoms of Addison's disease is an electrolyte imbalance? High potassium and low sodium (which is why people with Addison's tend to crave salt). Gatorade has electrolytes... and florinef increases the level of cortisol in your body (compensating for your adrenal glands)... so that could explain a lot! Interesting... -

				ARCHIVED Fresh Mint Ideas?
Mother of Jibril replied to one more mile's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Mint tea is very nice Take a handful of leaves and put them in boiling water (it has to be boiling hot). Let it steep for about ten minutes and then strain out the leaves. I love to make a whole pitcher full and stick it in the fridge when it's done steeping... mint iced tea! Very refreshing. Another nice idea if you can have dairy... a scoop of...
