				ARCHIVED Seasonal Allergies Triggering Celiac
Mother of Jibril replied to JoD's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've been having mild abdominal pain for more than a year. The gluten-free diet helped a LOT (I started about the same time as you), but... the pain is back. Not as bad as before, and I'm positive that I'm not being glutened. In February I started having anaphylactic reactions and I've learned a lot of interesting things about allergies. For example,... -

ARCHIVED Complication With Dehydration Or Sjogren's?
Mother of Jibril replied to Woolygimp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you have Sjogren's (and I agree that it's possible even with negative tests) then your body has been attacking the moisture-producing glands in your body. It's not enough just to drink more water, because fluids like tears and saliva are a lot more complicated than that. Although... as you've noticed, becoming dehydrated can make things worse. Here... -

				ARCHIVED Substantial Weight Loss Worries
Mother of Jibril replied to Storm's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I assume you're on the gluten-free diet... when did you start? In February 2008 (just before my son was born) I weighed 230 pounds. 50 of those pounds were from the pregnancy. After my son was born I started having a lot of abdominal pain... at first I thought it was afterpains Without ANY dieting (I was living off sandwiches, cereal, pizza, noodles... -

ARCHIVED Other Intolerances Acquired After Over-exposure?
Mother of Jibril replied to TearzaRose's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had that experience with corn... When I stopped eating gluten I substituted with corn chips, corn cakes (like rice cakes, but made of corn), corn bread, corn flakes, popcorn, polenta, grits... plus traces of corn are in EVERYTHING. It started giving me the same kind of abdominal pain as gluten Right now I'm slowly adding traces back in, but I don... -

ARCHIVED Artificial Sweetener's Side Effects & Dangers
Mother of Jibril replied to oblio-a's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like stevia too I also use a little bit of honey and pure maple syrup... I don't see the need to use artificial sweeteners when so many natural alternatives are available. Just a personal choice. -

ARCHIVED Severe Diarrhea Cant Stop It.
Mother of Jibril replied to Kimberly Pelton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're living on immodium and still having severe diarrhea, my guess would be Chron's (it's possible to have both celiac disease AND Chron's). Have you looked up the symptoms? I agree with mushroom about keeping your diet very simple while you're waiting... are you also drinking enough water? -

ARCHIVED Multiple Food Allergies And Celiac Disease
Mother of Jibril replied to samcarter's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
A few thoughts for you... 1) Environmental allergies don't cause anaphylaxis (which is defined as a mast-cell-mediated reaction involving at least two systems in your body... skin, GI, cardiovascular, etc...) 2) Environmental allergies CAN cause severe asthma attacks, which are also dangerous. If that's what you have (bananas and apples are common... -

				ARCHIVED Medical Id Bracelet
Mother of Jibril replied to Amy Joe's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I wear an ID bracelet in case I pass out during an anaphylactic reaction I need to update my tag too... after more testing it looks like I have "idiopathic anaphylaxis" instead of "severe food allergies" (the original diagnosis). Here's what I'm planning to put on the tag: My full name ANAPHYLAXIS SEE WALLET CARD Husband's phone number ... -

ARCHIVED Ulcerative Colitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Hashimoto's- What Do I Eat?
Mother of Jibril replied to healthseeker's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Just wanted to chime in about this part... Synthroid doesn't do anything to your thyroid, it just replaces the T4 your body is supposed to be making on its own (like a type 1 diabetic using insulin). How long have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism? Is it Hashimoto's? Sometimes it takes a while to find the right dose and/or medication. Most importantly... -

				ARCHIVED Coconut Oil
Mother of Jibril replied to Chrissyb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Coconut oil is also really nice for oiling pans (to prepare them for baking). It smears easily like shortening, but it tastes a LOT better and you don't get the trans-fatty acids I also like to use it for making omelets and sauteing vegetables. In my experience, it doesn't cost any more than high-quality olive oil. -

ARCHIVED Post-nasal Drip/ Congestion As Symptom?
Mother of Jibril replied to RoseRobin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was told that Zyrtec and Claritin are equally effective (and shouldn't cause drowsiness), but every individual is different... so if the first one doesn't give you relief try another one. I've also read that it's pretty common for antihistamines to lose their effectiveness if you take them for long periods of time. A slightly different medication (like... -

ARCHIVED Post-nasal Drip/ Congestion As Symptom?
Mother of Jibril replied to RoseRobin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Has your son ever tried taking antihistamines? I'm taking 10mg of generic Zyrtec (cetirizine) each day to prevent hives and hopefully lessen my monthy anaphylactic reactions It also helps with the stuffy, runny nose! I didn't notice it until I had to stop taking antihistamines for a week (for more allergy testing) and the nasal symptoms came back. Ugh... -

				ARCHIVED gluten-free Kosher Meats?
Mother of Jibril replied to raisin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That is tough I saw some chicken at Traders Joe's that was both organic and Kosher... the only mainstream place I've ever been able to find it. -
I would be careful about that book I have a copy too. I went through the quiz and my scores were sky-high. I thought, aha! Now I know what the problem is! Then my endocrinologist ordered an ACTH stim test... and it came back perfectly NORMAL. Not even borderline normal... really, really normal. The endocrinologist said that the average person...

				ARCHIVED 20+ Food Intolerances...help?!
Mother of Jibril replied to takeme out todinner's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
With celiac disease it's important to avoid gluten 100% (as you know). If you have anaphylactic allergies to specific foods... for example, if your throat closes up when you eat peanuts... then it's important to be very careful about avoiding those foods too. It's possible that you have another condition going on (IBS, Chron's, ulcerative colitis... there... -

				ARCHIVED Interpreting Hla Results
Mother of Jibril replied to eliza9's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Eliza9, A good place to start is the Wikipedia page on HLA-DQ: Open Original Shared Link You have DQ2.2 and DQ7.3. Neither one is an official "celiac" gene (meaning your chance of having autoimmune damage to your intestines is greatly reduced), but both genes are associated with gluten sensitivity. So... have you tried the gluten-free diet?... -

ARCHIVED Reaction? Heart Racing, Itchy Throat, Panic Attack?
Mother of Jibril replied to yumyummum's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right I wonder why I was thinking #1... Allergic reactions can definitely cause digestive symptoms. The GI tract has a lot of mast cells. One thing to know about shellfish is that it has naturally high levels of histamine, so even if you don't test positive for any food allergies that could explain why you had a reaction to clam chowder. -

ARCHIVED Reaction? Heart Racing, Itchy Throat, Panic Attack?
Mother of Jibril replied to yumyummum's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Tachycardia (a fast heartbeat) can be a symptom of allergies as well as panic attacks, but the itchy feeling in your throat and urgency to urinate sound more like an allergic reaction. Just my two cents... I know what they both feel like. -

ARCHIVED Any Gardening Tips For A Beginner?
Mother of Jibril replied to purple's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've been a growing a container garden on my deck for the last three years... it's great! It's very easy to grow herbs, hot peppers, and edible flowers (marigolds, violas, nasturtiums) if you buy starters from a garden center or the farmer's market. I like to mulch the plants so I don't have to water them as often or pull weeds. Last year I tried French... -

ARCHIVED Reaction? Heart Racing, Itchy Throat, Panic Attack?
Mother of Jibril replied to yumyummum's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It could have been an allergic reaction to something in the clam chowder. Even if the soup was gluten-free, dairy and shellfish are common allergens. -

ARCHIVED Are Hives A Part Of Dh?
Mother of Jibril replied to angmoore's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Anyone having problems with chronic hives (defined as lasting six weeks or longer) should see a dermatologist or allergist and check out this website: Open Original Shared Link Some people do have hives that are caused by foods (especially foods that have high natural levels of histamines), medicines, chemicals, stress, exercise, heat, cold, sunlight... -

				ARCHIVED Cutting Out Dairy
Mother of Jibril replied to LandonL's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah... that's what they claim... but you can find a lot of threads on this website about the dangers of Rice Dream. Almond milk is delicious if you can have nuts! "So Delicious" makes the coconut milk that you can just pour and drink... yummy It comes in plain and vanilla. They also make non-dairy ice cream that I've heard is very good. -

ARCHIVED Testing For Other Autoimmune Disorders
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The rheumatologist I met with is convinced that my dry eyes are related to allergies, not Sjogren's. Possible... I've started taking antihistamines on a daily basis to see if it helps with the anaphylaxis, and it does seem to be helping my eyes. The true test will be if I can stop using Restasis without a return of the blurry vision and painful, bloodshot...
