OK, TMI alert... Yesterday after I went to the bathroom, I noticed a strange white blob in my stool. It was about the size of a small grape, whitish-grey, looked waxy, and actually had sort of a strand or tail or sprout-looking thing coming out of the top. It wasn't alive, whatever it was. I didn't feel courageous enough to dig it out of the toilet...

ARCHIVED Doc Appt. Yesterday, Met My New Gastroenterologist
julirama723 replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I called them back and found out it was prescribed as a precautionary measure, in case my intestines have been fighting off bacteria. I don't even want to take the stuff. Especially since there's no proof I have an infection, and giving me an antibiotic "just because" doesn't solve any problems, IMO. I will check to see if it is gluten-free. I have... -
ARCHIVED Low Serum Iga
julirama723 replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am not really a "sickly" person, but as a kid I got sick a lot, and when I was being actively treated for Graves Disease, I had a respiratory infection or ear infection (or both) usually about every 3 weeks. (But I believe that was from PTU, which lowers immunal resistance.) For a while I was getting UTIs every couple of months. In the past year, I seem... -
ARCHIVED Low Serum Iga
julirama723 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I got a call from the doc's office today, and spoke with his nurse. My test results are back, and everything was "normal" (hormones, thyroid, nutrients, no lupus) except serum IgA, which was low. I know that low IgA can mean the possibility of celiac, since other tests in the celiac panel are meaningless if serum IgA is low. Low IgA also means I'm at risk... -

ARCHIVED How Many Of You Have These Multiple Issues:
julirama723 replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm very new with all of this, but I'll add my experience. I was VERY obese just 2 years ago. Over 270 pounds. I would bake all of the time, eat dozens of cookies (in secret), live on fast food and pizza. Pretty gross. I felt like crap (and looked like crap, I saw a pic of myself looking like a whale and that is what made me decide to do something... -
ARCHIVED Vodka
julirama723 replied to BelievinMiracles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Larry Mac, thanks for the link and the info! You learn something new every day. I knew *something* in "cheap" tequila made me feel nasty the next day. (When I read those other sources speaking of mixto containing alcohol distilled from grain, it didn't seem so far-fetched, especially with other problems I've had with grain-distilled alcohol... -
ARCHIVED Vodka
julirama723 replied to BelievinMiracles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've read it in quite a few places, here are just a couple of examples. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link This is the stuff I'd read before, though I have also found websites that claim the filler is cane sugar, just as you said. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I do know that I certainly... -
ARCHIVED Vodka
julirama723 replied to BelievinMiracles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had problems with grain vodka AND corn vodka (I am positive I have issues with corn), but NO problems whatsoever with potato vodka. (I have a bottle of Luksosawa and it's pretty decent, not able to get Chopin here!) I've also had problems with whiskey, regardless of the gluten/no-gluten argument. (BAD hangovers as of recent!) Rum is fine, and watch... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Grass & Barley Grass?
julirama723 replied to Live2BWell's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
According to this https://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsaf...ents/Page1.html barley grass and wheat grass can contain seeds, which have gluten. -
ARCHIVED Doc Appt. Yesterday, Met My New Gastroenterologist
julirama723 replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hope so too, ShayFL. I know I had said previously that I wouldn't go back to a gluten-filled diet just for some test, but finding out that it could possibly be something else really threw me for a loop. When I went in for that first blood test, I didn't even know what to ask for specifically, or what to expect. I went gluten-free before I knew... -
ARCHIVED Green's Quest Tripel Blonde Ale
julirama723 replied to happygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If I recall, all Green's ales are gluten-free. They're also vegan and vegetarian. Open Original Shared Link They sell them at a specialty beer/wine store I go to. I bought a bottle of the Pathfinder Dubbel Dark Beer but haven't tried it yet. It was pretty pricey, $5/bottle, but I've heard lots of good things about it, so it was worth it. I... -
ARCHIVED Doc Appt. Yesterday, Met My New Gastroenterologist
julirama723 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I finally had my doctor's appt. yesterday with an actual gastroenterologist, not one of these local hacks I've been to... He agreed that my serological results could be a false negative because 1) they did not test Total IgA and 2) because I was basically eating gluten-lite prior to testing. He did NOT rule out celiac disease at all, and said he... -
Oh my gosh, that was hilarious. I have NEVER liked potlucks. It just seems like food poisoning is lurking under every spoon...

ARCHIVED Bloodwork Negative, Now What?
julirama723 replied to julirama723's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I do believe that my test results weren't what they "should" have been--I was not consuming the recommended 4-slices-of-bread-per-day-for-6-weeks amount of gluten prior to the testing, simply because I don't eat that much grain product to begin with! So I guess I was "gluten-lite" when I was tested. I did pick up a copy of my lab results and they did... -
I'm not sure how I missed this article last month, but I'm really impressed with it, considering how few people there are in Montana (in my area) who know about celiac and gluten-intolerance. I think it's misleading to say it only takes 3-4 days for symptoms to go away, but it's really cool that this article came out, it at least promotes awareness. Considering...

I can't eat potatoes either, I get horrible stomach cramps. Some good potato substitutes (though not dairy free): Mashed cauliflower--I nuke it in the microwave, then throw it in the food processor with a bit of butter or sour cream (well I used to...) and add salt, pepper, chives, garlic, onion. They taste like really great mashed potatoes, and I...

ARCHIVED Big Appetite Anyone?
julirama723 replied to milelj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've not been "officially" diagnosed by a doctor (and I'm not sure I ever will) but after my mom was diagnosed with celiac and I was having lots of symptoms, I decided to go gluten-free. In the year leading up to going gluten-free, I put on about 20 pounds. (I had lost 100 pounds previously, so this really freaked me out.) I wasn't eating vast quantities... -
ARCHIVED Hard-boiling Eggs
julirama723 replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
After they've boiled, I run cold water over them for about 5-10 minutes until they're sufficiently cooled. I don't peel them right away. Because the cold water helps the egg constrict and "shrink away" from the shell, I have no problems peeling them when I'm ready to use them. -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Seen The Ad For Calorie-free Pasta?
julirama723 replied to JNBunnie1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I actually really like shiritaki noodles! They are chewy, but have LOTS of fiber, (and if you get the tofu noodles, protein, too) and are a good choice if you're watching carbs or calories. Rinse the noodles once they're out of the package, and boil them for about 10 minutes to eliminate the "natural odor" which smells like a bad day at the ocean... -
ARCHIVED Extreme Underweight Issues
julirama723 replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm still kind of new at this, but I have to bring my lunch to school each day too (I'm a teacher) and can't eat what's served in the cafeteria--each time I have, I've felt pretty gross. These are some of the foods I usually eat now or have eaten in the past: apple with peanut butter fresh veggies (broccoli or cauliflower, sometimes carrots) grilled... -
ARCHIVED Best Celiac/gluten-free/food-intolerance Publications?
julirama723 posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
What are the best books and other print resources available that deal with celiac, gluten intolerance, other food intolerance issues, grains as toxins, specific food plans, cookbooks, scientific research, etc.? What are your favorites? What have you read? What's not worth reading? -
I have "carb" dreams like this, usually in times of stress. (I say carb dreams because I'd been following Atkins for 2 years prior to my recent shift into gluten-free.) In the dreams I'll be eating something, not paying attention (or not knowing what it is) then suddenly look down and it's a hot fudge brownie sundae, or a huge cheeseburger, or a huge...

ARCHIVED Test Results Back, More Confused!
julirama723 replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for your replies! I was really confused by the tests since my "numbers" (not only my actual numbers but the interpretive criteria as well) looked completely different than any other test numbers I'd read about on this forum. Mother of Jibril--They did not test my total IgA, and it does look like that would have made a difference in the... -
ARCHIVED Test Results Back, More Confused!
julirama723 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
OK, I have been reading through all of the "test result" topics that I can find, simply searching for something to compare my results to. I am more confused now, having the results in my hand, than I was before. I'm not sure the doc even ordered the right tests. He certainly didn't order EVERYTHING I needed. Sigh. Here's what I have: Celiac...
