  1. My Graves Disease symptoms (keep in mind I was diagnosed at 13 but had symptoms for 4 years prior to that and did not tell a soul): extreme appetite extreme thirst extreme weightloss huge growth spurt (I grew 10" over the course of one summer) fatigue AND insomnia (The fatigue was possibly a by-product of the insomnia. I would fall asleep everyday...
  2. Another good way to stop cravings is to eat something high-fat, something natural and healthy. I don't know what your sensitivities/intolerances/allergies are, but perhaps some nuts, an avocado, a piece of cheese, etc. Fat is more satiating than carbs, and is slower to digest, thus making you feel more satisfied.
  3. This is such a fascinating thread! Thanks to those who have offered information and experiences. I believe that BOTH external environment as well as internal gut flora play a large part in our health (or lack thereof.) What it comes down to is stress; internal stress, external stress, physical stress, emotional stress, mental stress. Everything is connected...
  4. I feel your pain, I got sick from Halloween too, and I'm still sick! I'm trying to figure out if it was sloppy bartending, or a bad reaction to a type of vodka. This was my first time going out since I've been gluten-free. It sucked.
  5. Thanks modiddly 16! I could find that it was distilled from Midwestern grain, but couldn't find if it was corn or wheat. Thanks for the info! This is the 3rd day of me being sick from whatever I had on Friday, this is crazy.
  6. Nope, no flavorings. My only thought is the cranberry juice, though I don't know why it would contain gluten. (HFCS yes, yuckkkkkkk.)
  7. Your current running schedule looks good to keep you maintaining fitness until you start training for the marathon. You might even want to do just 3x/week, as it's usually a really good idea to give yourself a break between runs. Cross training is really important, and while you're training for a marathon, be sure it's an activity that doesn't stress...
  8. I'm not able to buy Chopin here (I live in a very small town right now) but was able to find Luksusowa, which is made from potatoes as well. I checked the Skyy website, and while it was very glitzy, I couldn't find any real information.
  9. Thanks, Momma Goose! I've actually read through that before, and it's VERY interesting, in fact, it's sort of the reason I am curious. I went out last night, and today my insides feel absolutely horrible (aching, cramping, diarrhea.) I did not get horribly drunk, and this is not a hangover. I drank vodka, which is of course is gluten-free, but in...
  10. I can't seem to find what exactly SKYY Vodka is made from. The company website says it's distilled from grain, but WHAT grain? Wheat or corn?
  11. Bob's Red Mill makes coconut flour, and you can probably buy it at your health food store. It's made in the same facility that processes tree nuts and soy, so that might be an issue? If you can buy unsweetened coconut, you can make coconut meal or course flour in your food processor or coffee grinder. (I have a coffee grinder that I use to grind nuts into...
  12. Thank you for your posts! I'm definitely going to stick with a gluten-free diet. I feel so much better eating this way. I will see if there is a legitimate allergist in the area. Thanks for the suggestion! I will also try to get a copy of my test results.
  13. Thanks everyone for your comments! That tortilla recipe looks really easy, and I've always wanted to make my own tortillas, I just never got around to it. I think I will try to find Mission brand chips, since they do sell those around me (just not in my actual town.)
  14. Hey all... I apologize if this is a question that's been asked a hundred times. I have not successfully found corn chips that don't make me feel like crap. Each time I eat them, I get the same gluten symptoms I get from wheat, albeit somewhat milder. Bloating, gas, discomfort, mild constipation. I've tried Carmen's chips (they're made in Oregon...
  15. Larabars are great and I used them for training, too (though not as much, because they're not readily available in my area like CLIF bars were)--the fruit is "quick" energy and the nuts are "sustained" energy. Pranabars would be great, too. (I was forced to use PowerGels during the marathon and good god, I don't know if it was just the result of running...
  16. Congrats on training for your first marathon! I ran my first marathon this past July, and it was AMAZING!!! I won't lie, training was absolute hell, but the race itself was one of the best experiences of my life. Here are some things I learned that will probably help you: **Fuel yourself for ENDURANCE and PERFORMANCE** Make sure that you are consuming...
  17. There's a store called Huckleberry's in Spokane that is FABULOUS--organic foods, health foods, gluten-free foods! Open Original Shared Link I know there are a couple restaurants, too, but can't remember their names at the moment...
  18. Questions: 1. sex: female 2. age: 27 3. ethnic group: Caucasian (of Northern European and Eastern European descent, Irish/Scottish/Polish/Romanian) 4. age at which you were diagnosed: 27--Mom diagnosed as celiac, self-diagnosed gluten-intolerance (through dietary experiment) currently looking into genetic/stool testing. 5. How did you feel when you...
  19. My results are FINALLY back, 2 weeks after my blood was drawn. (How long does a celiac panel usually take? 2 weeks seems utterly ridiculous!) Guess what, they're NEGATIVE for celiac. I had the nurse read the results (and she couldn't even pronounce half the words correctly) to me, and she said for each test, no antibody was present. I was honestly frustrated...
  20. Soy flour is very strong-tasting, but I've found a couple of good uses for it and you can't taste the "soy" flavor. I've used it as a "breading" for chicken. After dipping the chicken in egg, coat it in a mixture of salt, pepper, soy flour, and any other flavors, like fresh herbs, dried garlic, etc. You can pan-fry it like regular breaded chicken,...
  21. Hey all. I've been gluten-free for about a week now. So far, it hasn't been hard, as I didn't eat processed foods or a whole lot of "bad" foods before, I've just had to check and double-check things like spices, sauces, dressings, etc. (I eat produce, meats, dairy, nuts, fats.) For the first few days, I felt absolutely great! More energy,...
  22. Gluten made me gain, too! I am new to this board, but not new to low-carbing. (I'm very active on a low carb BB.) About 2 years ago, I was pushing 300 pounds, and I started Atkins, which focuses on healthy fats, adequate protein, and healthy carbs. I lost about 100 pounds in a year, adhering to the plan, working my way up the "rungs" and adding...
  23. Thank you for your replies! I am not nervous about an endoscopy, it's just that I'm in an area that isn't very medically advanced for this sort of thing. (I currently live in a small town in Montana, I moved here about 3 years ago.) The doctor and lab tech had to look up celiac disease in a medical book or online or something. My blood test had...
  24. Atkins has a bad name because people do not understand the plan fully. Atkins is NOT no-carb at all. The plan focuses on keeping GOOD nutrient-rich carbs in the diet while eliminating the junk. True, induction, the strictest phase, lasts 2 weeks, but 3 cups of veggies are required during this time (which is 1/2 cup MORE than the recommended daily allowance...
  25. Hello all, I am new to the board. I've been reading lots of posts in the Pre-diagnosis forum over the past couple of days. My mother became ill this summer while they were vacationing and was rushed to the ER just last week, almost at renal failure, anemic, severe hypothyroid, had lost 40 pounds in 2 months, etc. On Monday the diagnosis was confirmed,...
