  1. DMarie--chipotle gives food that smokey/BBQ taste. Chipotle peppers are smoked and dried jalapenos. You can either buy the dried peppers whole or ground into a powder. I use McCormack's brand of the seasoning, I put it in all my Mexican dishes!
  2. I typed a HUMONGOUS reply this morning, and something happened with internet explorer and I lost the post! So I shall try once more... Ali--Hrmmm, I must beef up my immune system...is a selective IgA deficiency going to complicate things for me? I just found out I've got this, which would explain the proilferation of colds and other nasties I always...
  3. Ali--interesting about the pain. Perhaps it's unrelated (but how could it not be? It's all happening inside the same body) but yesterday and today still I have this painful ache in my left shoulderblade area. Last night it was downright excruciating and it wasn't lessened with massage at all. Today it still hurts quite a bit. I wonder if it has to do...
  4. Congrats on the halfer! And I'm so jealous you ran Bay to Breakers...I would LOVE to run that! (Until I can, I suffice with running Bloomsday.) I haven't been running seriously since I discovered my problems with gluten. I ran a marathon this past July, and it's actually the months of training that sent me over the edge with gluten intolerance....
  5. Pele--perhaps that's why my mom did not breastfeed...though my fiance is almost the same age as I am (only 4 months younger) and he was breastfed, though he was the only one of his siblings who was. It's one of those weird questions I've never felt comfortable asking my mother! I was born in '81--not sure when the no-breastfeeding mentality was in practice...
  6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reply you received is not entirely factual. Yes, the FDA is required to list foods that contain the top 8 allergens or ingredients derived from the top 8 allergens. If wheat is listed, this means the product contains wheat or wheat products. Rye, barley, and oats are NOT in the top 8 allergens, so they are not...
  7. I also can not eat any grains that I've tried so far. Gluten-containing foods are a no-brainer, but I also can't tolerate rice or corn. (I don't know about other non-glutenous grains, I haven't eaten them.) Quinoa is not actually a grain, it's a seed. Open Original Shared Link Tapioca is a starch made from cassava or the yuca plant. Open Original...
  8. Maybe one thing that would work is to incorporate good foods IN to your current diet, rather than focusing on taking all the bad stuff OUT at one time. Add peppers to omelets, cut up fresh veggies and serve with dip as a snack, keep a fruit bowl filled with a wide variety of fruits. Experiment with veggies that have lots of sweet flavor, like sweet potatoes...
  9. Well, I'm sorry to say that I've got a migraine today, and I am so lethargic and tired I could fall asleep here at work. This definitely feels like some sort of die-off or withdrawal reaction, yuck. But still no intestinal troubles so I'm counting my blessings. As for the health-breastfeeding link, I found a couple of articles: Open Original Shared...
  10. Mr.GlutenFree--thanks for the info! I'll be traveling to the area in March and had been wondering about store and restaurant options. I'm excited to hear there's an In-N-Out, I LOVE that place!
  11. Ali and rinne, isn't there a link between non-breast fed babies and health problems later in life? I'm also one of the formula-fed babies. I'm not sure why I was given formula. Whatever the reason, I was on formula, and it was discovered I was EXTREMELY lactose intolerant (we're talking projectile vomiting), so I was fed SOY formula instead, eek! I...
  12. Slight thread jack... mommida--if you are interested in taking a multivitamin, but are reacting to the iron, look for a 50+ multivitamin, regardless of your age. Vitamins like centrum silver or any others intended for the over-50 crowd do not contain iron.
  13. I'm jumping on the "good fats" wagon with this one! ) Fat tastes good, and it's very satisfying. If I eat a meal does not have enough fat, I do NOT feel satisfied, and often I end up getting hungry again, much too soon. Make sure to eat fat with each meal or snack to keep blood sugar stable. I was at first a skeptic when it came to low-carbing, but...
  14. I don't know if vocal problems are related to celiac, but I do know that hoarseness and voice changes are related to thyroid problems, specifically hypothyroidism. (Both celiac and hypothyroidism are autoimmune disorders.)
  15. Gentleheart, if you're in a pinch (and making something more rustic/simple) you can make your own almond meal. I make mine in a small coffee grinder. Just place the almonds in and grind on the "espresso" setting until it is to your liking. Don't grind too long, or else you end up with almond butter! I started making my own almond meal because I couldn...
  16. I just wanted to add a positive comment about Zehnder's, which is also in Frankenmuth. (Zehnder's and The Bavarian Inn are both owned by the Zehnder family.) My mother is celiac, and goes to Zehnder's all the time! They are ALWAYS accommodating, always have excellent food and excellent service. The chefs John and Bobby have done training on gluten intolerance...
  17. Gentle--that's an excellent point. We had considered staying here another few years (because it's financially lucrative to do so) but now with the advent of all these health issues, we'll probably move as soon as we can. The area we're planning on moving is NOT agricultural by any means, so I think things might improve. It could be just a coincidence...
  18. Ang--that's actually why we started using the local raw honey in the first place, to help with my fiance's allergies. It seems to be really helping him! He used to get wiped out when allergy season hit, now he just gets a bit of sniffling and sneezing. As for helping me, I'm not so sure!
  19. Rinne--Do you think it's a yeast die-off then? It's got to be something, it seems I have always gotten migraines as "withdrawal" from something (like a certain food.) I had everything checked in November, and the doc said I was "disgustingly normal." And I was, too, everything was smack-dab-in-the-middle of normal. The only thing that is abnormal...
  20. Rinne, thanks for the welcome! I've done the anti-yeast plan once before (when I thought my problem was only yeast--the other possible problem was celiac but I thought "pfshhh, I'm not celiac, I'm GAINING weight, not losing it!) and had a REALLY bad die-off. It was like the migraine from hell combined with the hangover from hell. There's a chance it...
  21. Hey all, I think I might be joining you...sort of. I read the thread from time to time, and I've read the last few pages, but did not have the gumption (or free time) to start from page one. I'd been feeling better since going gluten-free, even better since going gluten-free and dairy-free, and just kept improving when I eliminated all grains...
  22. Thanks for your response, Al. I don't know if this is possible but I've really begun to wonder since discovering my problem with gluten. I guess a sub-question of this topic would be: Can living in a wheat-concentrated area provoke symptoms or make symptoms worse? I live in an area of Montana nicknamed the Golden Triangle, because such a huge amount...
  23. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
  24. Oh duh, 2.5#, I mis-read that! Geez, that IS a lot of veggies! Other ideas: Broccoli slaw (I like this better than cole slaw) Fake cinnamon apples (made with chayote squash) Here's the recipe: Open Original Shared Link Daikon oven-roasted "potato" slices Jicama slices (it tastes sort of like an upripe pear or apple) I'm also a big veggie fan...
  25. I can definitely relate to this post! Call it what you may, addiction, cravings, etc. I know that when I eat certain foods, my behavior changes, and I become a different person. I could regale you with stories about baking cookies and eating 3 dozen of them before my boyfriend got home. (I would double or triple the recipe so it wouldn't look like I...
