  1. I agree with Riceguy about the weight issues, and IMO it seems like the whole atken's, low carb diets are for people to lose fat (I may be wrong.) If that is the case, than carbs don't seem like the right way to gain weight, especially not if you're a young guy. I'm a young guy and before all of my intestinal issues started I could eat a whole pizza as...
  2. Rice Guy: I spent about 8 months gluten free while taking tests, everything came back negative and I didn't improve. My standard GI said to eat whatever I wanted and see how the stress relief felt, so I did that for a few months and felt the same -bad. The GI guy said it was IBS, so I ditched him and went back to my naturopath! This is my fifth week taking...
  3. Hey everybody, so I'm not having trouble sticking to the diet (meat, veggies, eggs, veggies in a 3:1 proportion to everything else) but I'm not seeing the improvements I would like to see. I'm on an antimicrobial to deal with candida, but for leaky gut all I take is a probiotic, fish oil and some "intestinal permeability" supplement, as well as digestive...
  4. I don't have Celiac, but it took me a long long time to finally figure that out. If you think you might have Candida, my naturopath had me do a couple of stool tests (unpleasant, but useful) one of them a comprehensive parasitology and the other looked at amounts of bacteria and yeast. This second one is really important; supposedly everyone is supposed...
  5. Hi Jason, if you're a guy worrying about losing weight I assume you lift at least a little bit? I'm almost exactly your size, 5'11" 150-155, I've always had trouble gaining weight no matter how much I eat or how much I workout. I wouldn't worry about carbs too much as they won't really add the weight you'd like (if you're like me I mean.) You're allowed...
  6. I finally got diagnosed with candida, and I've been on the fence about taking threelac ever since I found out. There's the whole debate of the bad bacteria, the one that becomes resistant to antibiotics. I've read an argument that the strain they use is "like one of twelve kids; just because some of the others are bad doesn't mean this one is." However...
  7. I was just reading the first page about how many women post here vs. men, not realizing it was from 2005. In my health care class last quarter we just discussed how insurance companies prefer young men to young women because we never go to the doctor! Anyway, I'm a man. Well, male anyway, I'm not sure I'm ready for all the responsibilities that come...
  8. Hey thanks a lot, I take it that means you think it's possible.worth exploring?
  9. Hey everybody, I was just wondering real quick if this sounded suspicious. July of 07 I went to a lake with my family and swam and spent the day there, and a week or 2 later I started my first job at a restaurant. Around that time, maybe within a couple months I started itching all the time, there's barely ever a rash or even a little red bump, but I'll...
  10. Hmm, I stupidly left my results at home and now I'm back at school, but according to the test those are my genes, the DQ2- and DQ8-. Is that just saying I don't have the DQ2 or DQ8, or is DQ2- a different gene than DQ2? and @ Ravenwood, the test had 8 genes on it, along with their individual likelihood of causing Celiac, are you saying there are 7 more...
  11. Hey everybody, when I was first getting tested for my various intestinal issues I did a stool test through enterolab that came back with...I think it was IGA of 24, and that's how I got on the whole gluten-free diet. So a month ago, about 3 or so months gluten free I finally got the gene testing done through Prometheus, and here were my results: DQ2-...
  12. The overgrowth is in the small intestine, where there is normally not (and not supposed to be) a lot of bacteria. I'm not exactly an expert, but from what I understand these bacteria then compete with you and the good bacteria for the food you put into your body, and when they consume it they produce gasses that cause intestinal discomfort. And to Kevin...
  13. Hey Kevin, I just got diagnosed the same way on Wednesday, got prescribed the Xifaxan for 10 days. This has been day one, and I feel no different but I'm hoping they do the trick. How are you in the process? Have you found something (antibiotic or otherwise) that has resolved it for you?
  14. My friends are really good, they don't try to poke fun at me at all (which is a blessing, because we rip on each other for basically everything else!) but I lighten the mood at meals by making jokes at my diets expense, you would be surprised at how good it feels to show that even though you're in a tough situation you can make light of it, and you're friends...
  15. Hey all, I'm reviving my own post so that I don't make a new one. Brief review of everything that's happened, I went to a party in May of 08, was dumb and immature and drank wayyy too much beer and did pot cupcakes late in the evening, woke up the next day with major D which abated later in the day. I continued to have soft and loose, frequent stools...
  16. I'm with you here friend, it would be nice to hear some stories of complete recovery. I've improved only mildly, and if monday's endoscopy comes back fine and dandy (like everything else has, aside from the enterolab for gluten) I just don't know what I'm going to do! So, no inspiring story for you, but I am in the same boat if that helps at all. One...
  17. I am on a vitamin regimen, but I haven't noticed any difference. I guess it's still good to get them in though. Through Enterolab I found out a have a little bit of yeast, but most of the doctors say it's a negligible amount. I went on a candida style diet for a few weeks and at first felt better, than slowly got much much worse. At the moment I'm waiting...
  18. This has taken over my life, I'm dropping out of school because I can't concentrate on my classes and to try and make some headway on the medical front but none of the regular docs or the alternative ones know anything. I have to get a lot of testing done, but every time I do it all comes back negative.... At this point it seems like food allergies can...
  19. First of all, has anybody else remember the day they first had intestinal problems? I went to a party, made some bad decisions and ever since the next day it's never been the same. Before that night I had perfect digestion, no food allergies, no bowel problems at all, I could eat a whole pizza, I could eat BBQ for lunch and dinner and I could eat an entire...
  20. Hey everybody, so my story goes that after I started having symptoms that persisted for a few months I went to a naturopath who ordered a stool test for me to check for bacteria/parasites etc. A week or so later I took a stool test from enterolab to check for gluten intolerance. I got the bacteria results back, and what it said was that I had 0 good bacteria...
  21. I have a question about the SCD regarding cheese, some cheeses are allowed on the diet, but I get bad symptoms from all of them. What does this mean for me? Is that a casein problem, lactose problem or what? And I'm sorry if there's a big SCD thread for this to be on, I found some links but none of them seemed to work, so if anyone wants to point this...
  22. That's very interesting...Gosh, I'd like to think it's just yeast that's the problem right now!! I'm going to do another stool test to check the yeast, if it's still excessive than I guess I'll have to assume that's my problem, thank you very much however for bringing this up in case my symptoms don't clear up!
  23. I know that many people say it's better to have around 6 small meals spaced throughout the day and snack a lot than to have 3 definite big meals, I'm not sure why though. I know exactly what you mean about putting on weight, I'm 5'11" and 155 on a good day, I've always had trouble putting on weight and now that I can't tolerate any protein powders it's...
  24. I remember hearing somewhere (I want to say from one of the trillion docs I went to see) that IBS is a "throwaway" diagnosis; that is, if they can't figure out the cause of the symptoms for another condition than they just assume you have IBS, which is actually a description of symptoms more than a real syndrome. If you can't figure out what the other...
  25. Hey everybody, so from following my food diary this is as much as I've surmised: Eating 1 apple or orange a day makes me a little gassy, but eating any more than that gives me outright bad digestive symptoms. Eating any carby foods (potatoes, rice, corn...) gives me bad symptoms. I've been reading "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" and the SCD seems to be...
