  1. *sigh* Sounds like me over the last month. As of this last Monday (3 days) I've given up eating any grains at all (I think it's rice, but I'll check this in a week or so) and I'm being very careful with dairy (I'm only eating yogurt or a little cheese but with the cheese I'm taking a lactaid pill.) So far, I'm feeling much better, even in the daytime. Last...
  2. I'm thinking Lays must have a bad batch out there. Two of my kids have been reactive all week and the only thing I haven't double checked are the potato chips (because I "know" Lays are gluten-free. ) I just told my eldest son about everyone's recent reactions and he's off them from now on, he said. Very big bummer.
  3. GFGal, that is TOTALLY romantic! My best wishes to the two of you!
  4. Unexplained attacks are the worst! Still, for me and one of my children, being "glutened" will have gastro effects on us for 2-3 days. Migraine/headache for 2 days. And, for my son's DH, it will last anywhere from 1-3 weeks. So... If it's any comfort, symptoms seemed to be worse and worse from about 2 months gluten-free to about 8 months (6 months...
  5. Wonderful list, Richard. Thank you for posting it!
  6. A pill?! As an adult with celiac disease, I can see the benefits of this (but, honestly, it better take care of every microgram of gluten in my body or will I still be in danger of brain/nerve damage?!) But as a mother of three with celiac disease, I'm very scared. What are the long term side effects, if any, that this will have on a developing child? Where...
  7. WooHoo! You have made my 10 year old very happy. This is his favorite candy (okay, and probably one of mine too )
  8. Mike, think of gluten like this...(okay, I'm in a mood ) You have a family history (whether you know it or not, that's how genetics work) where many people have died from lung cancer. Here you are, smoking a cigarette, coughing and having trouble breathing and generally feeling like crap (that's the gluten to an intolerant person.) Now, you don't have...
  9. I had not, even once, considered sugar being the problem. NOOOO! I'm screaming because today, while not having any grains, I had one little Reese's PB cup and started feeling ick afterwards. Not as bad as I felt after the piece of cake, but it was something of a reaction. And, I just had a small dish of ice cream (no gluten or rice...) but I'm getting that...
  10. Randy, as Ryebaby said, I also believe you should get tested. Another way to test your little one (and yourself too,) might be to go the Enterolabs route. This is a stool test, no blood needed. Tom, as far as your reaction to Tarnelberry, yes, you have had it bad. I even watched as my father died from this, so I know exactly how bad it can get. But, this...
  11. What did you order at Longhorn? I went there once and am not certain what it was, but I had a reaction (I think I ordered the barbaqued chicken salad, or something like that. Could the ranch dressing be Hidden Valley? Could the bbq sauce have gluten? Btw, it was so good ) My family would love to go there sometime, but I've been too afraid to take all my...
  12. I have mild hypoglycemia. The only time I felt nauseous from it was when I was pregnant, otherwise I get nervous, edgy and, according to my husband, crabby. When I am reacting like this, I am NOT hungry, but I've learned to force myself to eat something and then I'll feel almost instantly better. What I have to do is make certain I have something to eat...
  13. For the last three weeks I've been having that dull, I've been glutened feeling. Not the full blown migraine, GI fun that I get when really glutened, just the residual kind: a dull headache, burbly stomach, depression. The only thing I'm doing now that I wasn't doing before is eating rice far more often. It's in my breakfast cereal. Bread. Brownies. Etc....
  14. I think celiac3270 has a valid point (who, I believe, is also a teenager?) Your daughter is 13 years old and, unless her grandparents are purposefully misleading her (putting flour in something and saying it's gluten-free for example,) she needs to take responsibility for what she puts into her body. I would make it easy for her, of course, always packing...
  15. I made this for my husband's birthday tonight and it was excellent! Better than regular, evil, gluten-filled pound cake. Just thought I'd pass this along.
  16. My Wholefoods has started to carry some of the new items. I bought their pizza crusts but have yet to try them. The other items were pies, muffins and cakes. I hate to say it, but I doubt I'll buy any of them very often. They are extraordinarily expensive, imo, even for gluten-free and Wholefoods baked items.
  17. Donna, it makes me want to cry to read all the pain and suffering you and your daughter have gone through! I'm so glad they finally figured it out and you two are healing. Yet, knowing what you've gone through and where you are, knowing that you could have avoided maybe all of the debilitation, it must be incredibly frustrating that other members of your...
  18. Long before I'd ever heard of celiac disease, gluten, etc., one of the first indications I had that I was probably having problems with it (hindsight!) is that I became extraordinarily sensitive to certain fats; cream and meat fats mostly. I would be in GI h*ll for about 2 hours after eating these things (and then there would be nothing left in my system...
  19. Stef, I love reading your posts! I feel like I can picture you moving your arms and making your points! I'll bet you are as enthusiastic in person as you are in writing. (It's because of friends I have like you that I did finally start moving my butt...but to tell the truth, it's a mental struggle for me, but I do it! Lol!) By the who, I forgot to post...
  20. Donna, as Tom described, the numbness, achy, tingly feeling in hands and feet, is that what your doctor said will go away in time? For some reason, mine has been acting up horribly over the last few days to the point where I wake up 5-10xs a night from it (just my hands though.) I didn't know if this would change or not. Say it's so!
  21. I've been using Maxalt for my migraines and haven't noticed any bad reactions yet (but since I usually get my migraines from accidentally ingesting gluten, I might not notice any further reaction if there is some in the meds...) Gak...I'm beginning to get that overwhelmed feeling again.
  22. Combining, imo, can possibly have it's benefits. If one is diabetic, for example, slowing the digestion of more easily digested foods by eating them with those that take longer to digest so that you're not spiking your system is a good thing. I would suppose doing the opposite for people who have trouble digesting would also be good, combine the longer to...
  23. Hi Judy! I've been doing the South Beach diet and not having much of a problem keeping the weight I lost off (30 lbs.) Because SB stresses eating whole foods rather than anything refined (sugars, flours, etc.) it's not difficult to follow the maintenance phase and avoid gluten. I've also problems digesting most meats and seem to be becoming lactose intolerant...
  24. Hershey's has one of the least helpful websites I've ever visited! Anyone know if milk duds are gluten-free or not? Their ingredients look okay...but...(my son has a box and is bugging me this morning rather than yesterday when consumer affairs might have been open. Aargh!)
  25. Donna, I'm also very interested in this soy/neurological damage correlation. My father had severe Purkinje cell damage when he died two years ago causing his cerebellum to almost completely atrophy. As I and my three kids are all gluten intolerant with this kind of history, this is very important to me.
