Many Balance Bars are gluten free. I called the company and they were bought out by Kraft 1-2 years ago. Kraft has a pretty strict cleaning process they go through for their equipment (I used to do research on industrial lubrications...now that is an exciting topic...*cough*) Anyway, knowing what I do about them, I feel pretty comfortable eating something...

ARCHIVED Cottage Cheese?
FreyaUSA replied to fanfaire's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Erica, Light'n Lively is a Kraft product and Kraft has an allergen disclosure policy. Any ingredient it uses that is made from a known allergen will be listed after the ingredient in paranthesis. So, I checked my carton and it is gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Pie/apple Pie Crust
FreyaUSA replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Rite Aid...Okay. I know where one is. I really want to make these. What was the recipe you used for the filling? -
Long lashes? How funny! My second son (without geographic tongue) has ridiculously long lashes. He's 10 and even embarrassed about them. (I thought it was so funny, though I naturally DID NOT laugh, when he came home all upset because one of his friends was asking him why they were sooooooooooo long.) He's already a cutie (nope, no bias here ), but he's...

I have to say, in a relative sense, my lactose problems are the worst they've ever been (since I never noticed them before) and the stress level currently is pretty darned low. Go figure! So, I'm going to try the lactaid tablets. I had a bit of cheese with dinner tonight and I'm not really uncomfortable, but definitely not feeling as good as I was before...

Lately I've been noticing that whenever I have milk my stomach becomes incredibly burbly and noisy. I mainly use soymilk, but I use butter, cheese, sour cream, yogurt, etc. A couple days ago I was in a constant state of discomfort after having a small bowl of cereal with lf milk. Yesterday, I avoided everything until I had a piece of cheese (without even...

What you have is called "Geographic Tongue." My son and niece both have it (and my husband slightly.) It is totally benign. It's non contageous. Non harmful. With my son, when he's not feeling well, the swirls and curls become much more pronouced, too. Kind of like a thermometer. "Am I really sick or just have the blahs?" stick out your tongue! On a side...

ARCHIVED Chocolate Chip Banana Bran Muffins
FreyaUSA replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay, I also forgot to add a VARIATION: (I just made these last night. One of my kids likes these a lot.) Chocolate Chip Pumpkin (Bran) Muffins Substitute 1/2 can (about 1 cup) pumpkin for the bananas which are now in the original recipe. -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Chip Banana Bran Muffins
FreyaUSA replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OMG! I cannot believe I overlooked the BANANAS in typing out that recipe. YES! I will go back and actually add the bananas in, but for the rest of you...add: 2-3 med or 2 lg ripe bananas (all squished up) to the wet ingredients before you add the flaxmeal. Omg...I really need a good excuse for that. Let me think... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Chip Banana Bran Muffins
FreyaUSA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
These were my family's absolute favorite muffins. They were the reason for bananas. My kids go into the kitchen, see brown squishy bananas and get all excited. Anyway, it's the first thing I adapted when my diet changed. These are so good for you (because I just love to power pack things if I can) but don't taste it at all. Let me know if you try... -

gf4life, my family LOVES turnovers, be they fruit filled or meat filled. They're also a total pain in the you-know to make (and with gluten-free dough? I didn't think I'd ever make them again.) Thank you for posting your recipe and the wonderful way you made the turnovers! Now, I have a new recipe to try AND a new gadget I want!!! (I just love new gadgets... -
I actually went to one with a very helpful manager. With her help, I ordered some kind of sauted chicken with a wine based sauce that didn't contain gluten. The seasonings they use for their sauted chicken do contain gluten, so she had him make mine in a seperate frying pan without the seasoning. The big bowl of salad arrived sans croutons and was delicious...

ARCHIVED Band-aids: Transdermal Gluten Contamin?
FreyaUSA replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Very VERY interesting! I think I'll bring this all up to the pediatrician next time we go there. One of her worst reactions was to one of the "sensitive skin" bandaids the doctor put on her after a vaccine. We've been using gauze and tape for years not. It's too bad, though, they don't come in loony toon prints! -
Sorry I was out of touch so long! I also use Kraft shredded cheese. Also, when I get there, Costco's Kirkland brand is really nice too. When the say "to prevent sticking" they mean so that the cheese doesn't become a huge heavy clump in the bag, not that it won't melt nicely on the pizza (or whatever.) I'm making this this Friday for dinner. I'm adding black...

ARCHIVED Can Undiagnosed Celiac Cause Learning Disability?
FreyaUSA replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
An interesting article, but I really can't agree with this and it seems much of what he asserts comes with the acceptance of this as truth: -
When you buy a product that says it's been manufactured on equipment also used in the manufacturing of < >, they have done essentially that. Companies like Kraft will list all known allergens in their ingredient label, but still warn you that the chance of cross contamination is there (even if very minimal. Cleaning processes for food grade manufacturing...

ARCHIVED Band-aids: Transdermal Gluten Contamin?
FreyaUSA replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah, well. I thought we'd found an answer to this rather puzzling problem. No, the adhesive is not touching the cut, in my daughter's case. I'm curious now about why kids should be careful with things like playdo or glue that has gluten in it. Is it just the off chance that they'll eat the stuff that we have to be careful about? Then what about lotions and... -
PastorDave's Wife Could you post a recipe for cornbread using the corn flour? That is one of my kid's favorite treats and I would love to surprise him with it. Tiffany, could you post your recipe for the amaranth pancakes? And thank you for all that information on the various flours! It helped me figure out why my banana muffins were getting lighter...

ARCHIVED Going Off Gfcf, Okay For A Day?
FreyaUSA replied to Alexolua's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's the cake recipe. It was given to me by another online friend (so the comments are hers.) I haven't tried it in regular cake mode, so I haven't made the glaze yet. Though, it sounds really good! Pineapple Velvet Cake 2 1/2 c. gluten-free flour mix (1-1/2 c rice flour, 2/3 c potato flour, 1/3 c tapioca flour) 1 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. xanthan... -
ARCHIVED Band-aids: Transdermal Gluten Contamin?
FreyaUSA replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, wow. This would explain a lot. My daughter is "allergic" to bandaids (adhesives actually, all the different type of adhesive bandage, but most especially the waterproof 3M brand ones.) She's been like this for the last few years (she's 6.) If she has one on her skin, the skin blisters and burns and takes weeks to heal. It's awful. Since that has been... -

ARCHIVED Becoming A Reality
FreyaUSA replied to mommy2joseph&david's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Me and my three kids were all confronted with celiac disease over this last summer (I've been gluten-free since March, kids since June...July? ) It has been hard, but when you see little things you had no idea that were related to their reactions to gluten disappearing, you'll be more and more convinced how necessary and important this is. How to do... -
ARCHIVED Going Off Gfcf, Okay For A Day?
FreyaUSA replied to Alexolua's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Alexolua, do you bake? I was given a recipe for a gluten-free pineapple velvet cake that I make into cupcakes for my kids (but it can be a regular cake too.) They like it far better than their former, gluten-full cake that I used to bake for them. I also make these whenever there are potlucks or other get togethers, no one can tell they aren't "regular" and...
