  1. I believe olives are fine. I eat them (I just check the ingredient list to be certain. I'm obsessive about ingredient lists. )
  2. This is a very popular item on a recipe board I frequent. My husband and 15 year old absolutely LOVE this. I usually make the largest one I can because the leftovers are awesome (and so I can get some, too.) Meatza Pizza 1-3 lbs extra lean ground beef or turkey (depends on the size pan you are using, for a large-sized cookie sheet I use 3 lbs ground...
  3. I agree with whoever suggested you get everyone else tested, too. My entire household is gluten-free, though my husband is not intolerant (me and my three kids are,) he never eats what the kids can't around them even if we go out to eat. He does have his evil, shredded wheat and bran and raw mueslix cereals, but no one else ever liked them anyway. Those...
  4. Thank you for your answers! It's boggling sometimes to figure this all out.
  5. If you buy the bulk type (not the kind in little packets) then, yes, it's cup for cup. I find, however, if you use half sugar and half splenda, the artificial taste is nearly undetectable.
  6. I've read a couple times elsewhere on this board that companies add broth to raw chicken and, from these posts, it's my understanding that this broth is NOT gluten-free? I'm very confused. Could anyone clear this up for me?
  7. Imo, all the good work you do by restricting her diet the rest of the week is destroyed by the one day a week. My son doesn't get over the obvious signs from an "accidental" glutening for anywhere from 1-2 weeks. I would think the invisible ones are even worse. Again, just my opinion.
  8. Rofl! Okay, you're ahead of me, but especially since you have other people's houses camped out, too.
  9. I "do" the South Beach Diet, too. I've lost the weight I wanted, but the way of eating has become second nature: lowfat meats and dairy, lots of fresh vegis and fruit (especially during the summer...yum!) controlled amounts of "grains" (2-3 servings a day with 1/2 c being a serving), little to no bad fats... Works great for me. It also makes being gluten...
  10. This is interesting. I'd looked for it in the past, but with no luck. But just now I noticed it is also called "Milo" which I've seen at the mid east and asian markets near me. Thanks for the tip! I'll try it. (And, like, I do need ANOTHER container of "flour" in my cupboard. I must have 7-10 now, including several mixes I've made. LOL!) We should have...
  11. Actually, splenda is about as innocuous as an artificial sweetener can get and it tastes much better, imo, than the others. It has been thoroughly tested and again, imo, is okay to use. I do and will continue to do so. It's a personal choice.
  12. I hope it's okay to post this here, but several people have asked for the recipe, so I thought this would be the place for them to find it. Flaxmeal Pancakes or Waffles You can fix these two ways, either by cooking like pancakes in a pan, the recipe makes three good sized ones (the benefit of this is that later in the day, if you have any left over...
  13. I found if I have 1/2 c of fat free plain yogurt (mixed with something to sweeten it a little) every day, my stomach is so much happier with me. If I miss having yogurt a couple days in a row, I become much more sensitive to different foods, especially fats (like in cream, meats, eggs, etc.) Just an idea. (I usually mix 1/2 c ff plain yogurt with ...
  14. Thanks for the responses! And I'm sorry I'm so late in getting back. I got a new computer and it messed up all my thread tracking. I should have said gluten-free CORN flour tortillas! They're wonderful. I'm fixing them differently now and my kids like them just as much and it's MUCH quicker. Fold 2 in a paper towel and nuke for 20 seconds. Done...
  15. Dessa, thanks for the mixture! I've been using chickpea and soy mixed, sometimes a little potato or tapioca flour, but haven't been all that pleased (works great in muffins with just the two bean flours though.) I'll try it with equal parts all next time. And, you really don't use the xanthan gum?! I've been led to believe it is a must with any gluten-free...
  16. I just found this in the Mid Eastern section of my grocery and was wondering if anyone else used this? The only grain I can eat that doesn't cause weird cravings in me is corn. (Rice, quinoa, millet...all seem to effect me strangely.) Because of this, I cook a lot with bean flours (soy and chickpea) as well as potato and tapioca, but am looking for something...
  17. I grabbed this from the Splenda website.
  18. One of the tricks I learned from dieting, for constipation take something like Metamucil before each meal. When you're not getting the grains like your system is used to, this will really help. It's just psyllium husks with flavoring and a little sugar. People swear by it. Or, I've a great recipe for gluten-free flaxmeal pancakes/waffles that uses metamucil...

    ARCHIVED The Good Life

Today, especially in the US, MSG is made with sugar cane or sugar beet. MUCH more cost effective to produce. Thus, Frito-Lay must be using non-gluten containing MSG in it's products if it is claiming to be gluten free. Sites I've read basically state if you're buying a product made in the US that contains MSG, it will be gluten free. But, do not assume the...
  20. Even if she tests negative to celiac's disease, she could still be gluten intolerant. I would suggest that even if all the tests come back negative (though the enterolabs one is most likely to actually detect the condition, imo,) try the gluten-free diet for a month or two and see if she reacts positively. It is work, but so is caring for a child that is...
  21. I certainly need tips! The elementary school is okay so far. I have gluten-free cupcakes in the nurse's freezer that my kids and the teachers know about. I've not even attempted to do anything with the cafeteria though. High school, however. OMG! What a group of nazis! (Excuse me, please.) They won't let him get hot water for the gluten-free instant...
  22. Yesterday my 15 year old, who's been on a gluten-free diet for 3 months now, accidentally ate 3 prezel thin cookie sticks (a tradition from 1st grade when a friend came back from Asia, he'd bring these.) My son said he ate them without a single thought except how wonderful they tasted. 10 minutes later his body was covered in a light, bright red rash, he...
  23. My three kids are all gluten intolerant. One of them, my ten year old, his ONLY symptom was moodiness. We used to call him our Mercury kid (because he was so mercurial...nice way of reminding each other he's "just being him.") We didn't really notice much of a change in him since going gluten-free, but, Friday, he ate a Pringle at school. The rest of that...
  24. Here's a good site for a LONG list of foods that have had the GI/GL tested. Mendosa also does a good job at explaining how the lists work. Again, good luck! Revised International Table of Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL) Values
  25. Brenda, have you thought of altering your diet ( okay, that's a hoot when talking with people who've gone gluten-free) ...anyway, altering it to regulate your sugar levels rather than go sugar free, which is kind of a way of temporarily taking care of the symptoms but leaving the overall problem there. Six months ago, me, my husband and a friend of ours...
