  1. In north america the DQ-2 and DQ-8 are the "celiac genes", other countries recognize other genes (I believe Ravenwoodglass mentions that the DQ-9 is recognized in Japan as celiac).....at this point on the enterolab site all of the rest of the genes (except DQ-4) are identified as "gluten intolerant" so to answer your question if you are gluten intolerant...
  2. Word! Thank you for posting that!
  3. if you are concerned about celiac you need to biopsy the intestines, not the stomach. celiac is defined as damage to the villi of the intestines. as for the blood panel it can produce false negatives but not false positives; the number I see fairly consistently is about 30% level of error.
  4. Hi there and welcome, this is a great place to get some answers! as to your question, jmho but it might be worth a try to stop the Zantac for a couple of days (I think the 1/2 life is about 12 hours) and continue to eat gluten and soy free to see if the pain comes back. if it does then perhaps it is an ulcer; if it doesn't then it might be worthwhile...
  5. Hi ohsotired, I've also been doing some research as I wait for my labs to come back, like you have a ton of hypo symptoms, some of the adrenal etc but have had a hard time getting my GP to take me seriously. what I've seen on another site is that the FT4 should be at about the mid point range and the FT3 should be at least half way and closer to 2...
  6. try this link Open Original Shared Link and click on "interpreting results"
  7. mung bean noodles aka cellophane noodles are a staple in my house, mostly you see them as vermicelli style but there are some wider versions available as well. check asian grocers for different varieties. another option is shiritaki noodles, shiritaki is made from konjac or purple yam. these things are essentially all fibre and a great option if you...
  8. have you checked out this site? http://www.drrind.com/therapies/thyroid-scale not affiliated with the site but have found it useful for trying to understand results of thyroid tests!
  9. Tiana-coconut has many recipes for the coconut milk (I'm not affiliated with them, just like their recipes!) I can't recall if you said if you could do eggs but an easy one to make is an egg custard with the coconut milk, that recipe normally has a sweetner in it so if you can't have that try the recipe with coconut cream which is thicker and more naturally...
  10. Thanks for that! unfortunately for me they don't sell in Canada but my father's going to Maui in the fall so I might ask him to pick it up. Looks like there are distributors on the US mainland, just not in all states. another gluten free vodka is Ciroc, made from grapes, this is my current favorite (I'm another one that reacts to wheat based...
  11. congrats on beginning the training for the ride
  12. www.littlegianthk.com I just checked this one out for interest sake (and for the next time I go back to HK) and it's not only stocked with gluten free stuff (brands we know like Pamelas and Kinickinick<sp?>) but it's just off the Causeway MTR station so easy access
  13. nope, many of us react to the grain based alcohols. Potato is good as is Ciroc (grapes) and there's a soy based one as well but I haven't tried it. another alternative at BBQs is hard cider, generally comes in cans/bottles like beer, is naturally gluten free (just fermented apple juice etc) and if someone decides to give you a hard time because you...
  14. don't recall if you indicated if you consume dairy but that can also cause constipation, for days actually (my body has been telling me this for a while, finally started to listen ) have you tried removing dairy for a few days?
  15. Sulevismom, your story could be mine, except for the breastfeeding part my youngest is 7 , last year dropped 25 lbs in short order (intentionally) but the neuropathy had started to show in February, tingling fingers, numb toes etc. D, anxiety, cramping, bloating and major abdominal pain showed up with their partner sudden, rapid weight gain in August...
  16. Hi there, no it's not unusual to be emotional. what you eat (or don't eat) can very much affect how you feel and how you react to things. If you've just been gluten free for a few days or so then you are likely in a "detox" phase while your body is learning it doesn't have to react every time you eat something.
  17. Hi NorthernElf I think this was Rice Dream that had the barley in it. Don't know about the soy as I can't really drink it. have you tried Almond Milk? I've used this one with success. I know Safeway and SaveOn both carry it. if you like chocolate that version is very yummy
  18. Hi and welcome to the forum! the general consensus is yes, keep eating gluten until the day of your biopsy. as horrible as it may sound continuing to eat gluten will continue the damage and lend itself to a more likely finding of damaged villi. and yeah in our case "a little bit does hurt", astonishing isn't it.
  19. Did you tell your doctor about your self-diagnosis? yes How did he respond to it? Was he accepting or dismissive? Did he want to or insist on proving or disproving it with "traditional" testing? my md had been willing to test for celiac but his training is quite a few years out of date and would only order a single test (even though I had told...
  20. I adore Freds!!! it's good to know they have gluten free menu items. There's also a health food grocer on the main road into Kahalui (across from the Border's strip mall) prices are insane but there's a good variety of items
  21. the full panel is: Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA Total Serum IgA My GP only did the EMA and while that is supposed to be specific to celiac if you are low Total Serum IGA then the results aren't worth a hill of beans.
  22. hi there and welcome! it certainly sounds like you could be one of us, fatigue, joint pain and many of the symptoms you describe are all quite common with celiac/gluten intolerant people. Do you know which blood tests your doctor did? was it the entire celiac panel or just the EMA? if it was the latter it would be worthwhile to get retested (make sure...
  23. I totally understand the driving part, there are many days where just fitting in food is a adventure with my job. what makes the eating clean while traveling for work is preparation, when I'm on the ball I do it on the weekend and then grab and go. as angle0251 said eggs are darn handy and quick, pre peel them in the morning cause then it's just grab...
  24. That pain is also a sign for me if I've been glutened. jerseyangel gave you some good advice to go and get the tests done, if nothing else it might allay any fear you have about your gallbladder and/or liver and know that the pain is likely a celiac reaction.
  25. Hi GFinDC, I guess it does! it would be interesting to know if there is a connection between dairy and thyroid conditions....there's a lot of literature out there that claims dairy helps weight loss as well (granted I'm sure a large number of those articles are written by dairy producers etc) which would connect with your theory of lessening of symptoms...
