  1. Hi there and welcome to the forum. Funnily enough, while Dr's often get a bad rap for mis diagnoses of celiac etc, in your case I suspect your doctor is not recommending this on a "whim", instead s/he seems like a somewhat well informed medico! There is a form of gluten intolerance that causes "gluten ataxia", it is seen frequently in people who...
  2. I am so glad you are feeling better! I did want to point out that I should thank Mother of Jibril for the information on the DQ1 genes MoJ, I've found your posts most informative and have helped enormously as I try to figure all of this out!!
  3. oh my goodness, yep, that's lots of stress!!! congratulations on being so strong. as for full blown celiac, from your symptoms sure sounds like it!
  4. Hi there! I'm nowhere near experienced at this but here's a go (hopefully the more educated will chime in!) Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA 26 Units (Normal Range <10 Units) this means that you are reacting to gluten in your diet, anything below a reading of 10 is negative so you are mildly positive (I say mildly only in comparison as I have seen others...
  5. same here, chronic C for most of my adult life, worse since my daughter was born 7 years ago. now I get D when I have gluten but it happens about 24 h after the contamination. (bit TMI but honestly, after being C for the past 7 years the D is almost a relief, I never realized HOW bloated I was until the D hit)
  6. just a note, tarnalberry, your information is for US patients (eta, that sounded a little snippy, sorry tarnalberry, not my intention ), nb-canada is Canadian and the rules are somewhat different due to differing tax regimes. In Canada medical expenses: the specifics on claiming for Celiac (for which you do require an official diagnosis) can...
  7. I don't think an enema would do any damage but I also don't think it would accomplish what you are hoping it would as usually an enema only uses a relatively small amount of water. On the other hand, perhaps you're thinking of a "colon cleanse" (which is really just a super enema)? I haven't had this done but have heard descriptions from someone who did...
  8. about 2 oz and when I've been glutened....my mother used to keep this stuff around for years, she had MS and found it helpful
  9. Aloe Vera juice, tastes so so, mix with some regular juice to get it down, that will likely help with the inflammation. Gas-X is good too for the bloating
  10. what's with that anyway!!! this is my situation exactly (even right now, right hand cold, left coldish but not as bad) I find that except for the few days in the summer when the evening temp is above 25 C I have to have a hot bath in order to fall asleep, nothing else works to warm my hands and feet.
  11. Hi Liberty, even with all your other symptoms aside this alone means you have celiac disease. Some of your other symptoms are also rather classic, the canker sores in the mouth, the D, bloating etc combined with the diagnosis of DH you should definitely stop eating gluten. Of course, if you wish to have another official diagnosis you want to continue...
  12. I think you've got a very good point! I'm not a user but I have watched someone in palliative care for a long time and was able to observe the effect of drugs on people in pain. In this person's case she was on Fentynl (sp? ....and yes, not anything like weed) and it was the drug that made her lucid and as normal as she could be under the circumstances....
  13. this is quite a common reaction and also why the use for medicinal purposes is legal in Canada (it has to be prescribed and is supposed to come from gov't controlled source) I've seen it mentioned as a use for MS patients as well but never heard of it for celiac.
  14. You may be negative for a dx of "Celiac Disease" but not necessarily for gluten intolerance. Unfortunately there is no medically sanctioned test for gluten intolerance but there is a practical test and that is a gluten free diet (as mentioned above). If you have a positive response to the diet (you feel better, symptoms decrease or disappear when off gluten...
  15. Where in China will you be going? the reason I ask is if we know the area then we'll have a better idea of the possibilities given the regional cuisine. In the south most of the cuisine is based around rice and there is very little wheat in the dishes; in the north wheat is quite common, especially in noodle or dumpling, although rice is still the staple...
  16. Hi Nicole, I agree with mushroom sounds like you need to be very simple to let your gut heal...the stewed apples sound like a good idea, or you could consider stewed pears (they're apparently less acidic???) you mentioned soup, have you considered congee? this is about 3/4 c rice, 9 cups of light broth (chicken or veggie would be best) and a teaspoon...
  17. This could be the case but in Canada, and Julie mentioned she is in New Brunswick, socialized medicine kind of takes away the whole profit aspect of a visit. the doctor's visit and the gastroscopy are covered, especially if she was referred from her primary care physician. the amount the GI specialist can bill up here is substantially less than what can...
  18. Hi and welcome! I'm in a "mixed household" (funny how that has such a different meaning here ) and no one else in my family follows a gluten-free diet, in fact they whine because I'm baking with gluten-free flours (not that the whining stops them from eating it ) I suspect that for the most part you can make a single meal....steak, potatoes...
  19. Salut Julie!
  20. yep, still checking in, I'm down just over 2lbs this week, about 15 more to go. I'm off the anti-biotics now and have been really hungry all week. but so far have it under control.
  21. Hi Anthony, have you checked the dog food? There are a number of posts that caution about gluten in pet foods causing problems for some. As for the depression, have you tried B12? I get the neuro symptoms and the B12 (sublingual - it skips the digestive process that way) helps quite a bit It will get better, I'm new like yourself and right now...

Congratulations and thanks for the update, it gives a newbie like me great encouragement
  23. this is just what works for me but: for pain, advil/ibuprofen it's an anti-inflammatory and works better on muscle pain (for me), aleve/naproxen would also work but I found it caused edema for the bloating Tums "gas" chews (they're just dimethicone <sp>) work for me in a pinch but they do have a sweetener, what works even better and was suggested...
  24. Hi Santafe girl and welcome for the leg cramps and spasms, this may be related to a mineral deficiency, try taking magnesium citrate before sleeping and some potassium daily to see if this helps (not a medical professional, this is just what I do for my cramping feet ) as for anxiety, it can appear as a symptom of gluten intolerance in...
  25. ^ l Well said! as were most of the responses..... instead of a pill, I'd rather see more accurate testing methods l so there'd be greater clarity.....not necessarily for those that have had a positive dietary response and know gluten is an issue, but for the benefit of both those that doubt them and society in general
