  1. Does anyone know what it means to have a low RDW (red cell distribution width) and normal MCV? I know these two tests are usually done in conjunction to diagnose anemia, but I read that in certain situations it can indicate villis atrophy. What about b-12 and folic acid--can just a low RDW affect them? Does anyone out there with anemia have blood counts...
  2. Are you sure it's not a "Celiac PANEL"? That is the name of at least two tests used to diagnose celiac disease--tissue transglutaminase (ttg) and total IgA.
  3. Today was one of those days that makes you wish you'd never got out of bed. But before I relate the days events, a little back story... About 2 1/2 years ago my SIL lived in an 1830's-1850's era farm house--one of the few remaining in our area. She is a vet tech., does volunteer animal rescue, etc. One day--I SWEAR this true!--she called me and said that...
  4. Hi there. Your post sounds so very...frustrated. I don't know if it will help, but I will share our healing story with you. My little girl was very, very sick for a long time until we finally figured out it was celiac disease. The diagnosis itself can be a long, painful series of frustrations. But, from a day and a half into the gluten free diet, she...
  5. Has your daughter had her eyes checked lately? Does she get blurry vision, headaches, see lights, or have ear issues? Ear problems (like fluid or wax build-up) can be extra problematic for celiac because of the prevalance of vertigo symptoms for some. Vision can play a role in the neuro. side effects. Ask her if she feels dizzy when she turns her head...
  6. Does any one know if Children's Motrin and Children's Tylenol (the liquids for older kids, not babies) are gluten free?
  7. Hello. I just wanted to say that my 8 year old daughter's liver enzymes were drastically elevated prior to diagnosis (total bilirubin 1.1 w/ o.o-o.7 range, ALT 715 w/ 24-49 range, AST 303 w/ 15-37 range). My child was negative for all hepatitis screenings. All numbers have returned to normal with gluten free diet. Below is a link to read over suggesting...
  8. Two things come to mind--migraines or allergy. I have read a ton of info. lately about the neurological symptoms associated with gluten, including migraines. Search this forum and the web, I know you'll easily find more discussion of it. Is it possible their could be another food sensitivity happening here, as well? If you are now using more soy (or...
  9. Reading this topic has brought yet again another revelation for me. My daughter was born by emergency c-section (breech birth and pre-eclempsia.) I really believe that both of us were emotionally and physically traumitised. I had a horrible time getting her on the breast and after frustrating her and bearing the pain (again, I had just been fileted...
  10. I am in the US, so am unfamiliar with the medical system in the UK. What was meant by "tests blocked by lab"? Would it be possible for you to have the genetic testing for the celiac genes, instead of biopsy? It seems to me that if the patient has the gene/genes and and positive dietary response, this should be enough to diagnose in a case with high risk...
  11. This is exactly what it looks like--a marketing ploy. I know, because I was employed in the field by a doctor who had invented an implant that he claimed would cure everything from foot pain to TMJ. The terminology is the red flag..."Cutting edge"!? The CEO/person at the top of the company or group making those claims about being able to "enjoy" gluten...
  12. If you suffer from arthritis and celiac this may offer some new info, but is in full "med speak" so tough to read. DH is mentioned near end of article. Looks like those nasty little antibodies really run the gamut--equal opportunity destroyers. Open Original Shared Link
  13. There is a ton of info. on this on this very website (celiac.com) https://www.celiac.com/articles/57/1/Interp...ults/Page1.html and celiac.org. My understanding of it is this...The antibodies appear as your body has an autoimmune response. For instance, if you had been exposed to, say, a virus, your body would produce antibodies against that virus...

    ARCHIVED Blood Tests Vs Biopsy

I just wanted to say that many of the members here, including my daughter, have had pos. blood tests and neg. biopsies. As Mushroom said, it can be 'patchy' damage to the villi and a gamble as to whether or not your doctor took the biopsy in just the right spot, which is one of the reasons why this topic has been so deeply debated. You may need to take...
  15. Wow. That was not only abrupt, but really inappropriate. Methinks you should demand that your doctor return from the golf course and interpret your test results for you IN PERSON, with the necessary follow up and referrals. It's one thing to have the receptionist/asst. call with negative labs, but this was rude and dangerous. Sheesh! Oh yeah--and get...
  16. Do you remember where you read this info? Could you please post a link or refer me to outside material? I need to know more--THNKS!
  17. I read through the entire petition, reply, and commentary and sent my own comments for submission, as well. I think this has a very strong chance of being passed into regulation very soon. Good for him!!! Thank you, Michael Weber!
  18. Hi. I just wanted to say that you will survive this "meltdown"! You will (I promise) find great new ways to have delicious meals. And even get some cool new kitchen utensils Your family will adjust and so will you. We have all been there and have found our way here. You will find you've come to the right place for friendship, advice, recipes and info...
  19. Humor is something that helps me cope--I don't believe we could survive this life without it. Things always look, and sometimes smell, better in the morning light--take on new perspective. Daughter feels better now. She has an appetite, had no fever at all last night, but says her leg hurt and she had to sleep fetal style for it to go away. I knew Wednesday...
  20. Hi, and thank you so much for responding. I have been trying to get medical help for my pain for almost twenty years and I'm tired--tired of hurting, tired of being offered dangerous meds without knowing what's causing it, and tired of feeling decades older than I am. You mentioned UBO'S--what is this exactly? It was not mentioned on the MRI report,...
  21. It's 2:30am here in the north of north. Can't sleep. Joints hurt, mind racing, and house smells like, well...ca-ca. Let me tell you a bedtime story. It goes a little something like this... "Once upon a midnight weary, she woke with something in her bed." Let me set the scene: It's 1:00 am and our heroine is in a deep state of peaceful repose when...
  22. Count us in! Just made the tastiest darn gluten-free chicken tortillas EVER (sooo full.)

ARCHIVED Recommend A Doctor In You State

Dr. Truding, Pediatric GI Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, Michigan Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Truding!
  24. Hmm...very interesting. My little girl started sleepwalking, sleep talking, moaning and crying in her sleep, all when her worst symptoms were taking place prior to diagnosis. It was really weird--I would wake up because I felt someone staring at me and there she'd be, silently looming over my bed. It was creepy as h**l! I would ask her what was wrong...
  25. Hello everyone. First off--thank you ALL for being (bar none) the BEST RESOURCE FOR CELIAC AWARENESS out there!! Now, my question is this--who among you has inflammatory issues? I ask for my own self, not my celiac child. I have read several other posts on other threads about these problems, but would like specific stories if you could share them. I...
