Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. Maybe this thread is really just an exercise in venting the frustration of trying to find a doctor who knows enough about celiac disease to give an accurate diagnosis, but I have to ask... How do you ask these types of questions without getting labeled as just fishing for a particular diagnosis? Enough of us have met doctors already who treat us like head...
  2. You mentioned earlier in the thread that you aren't having typical hunger pangs in the stomach but you read other signs that your body is hungry again. If what you're talking about is the above lethargy, some brain fog, maybe even drowsiness an hour or so after eating, I've been doing that for several weeks now, but I had a different explanation for it. In...
  3. Tums' site says all but one variety are gluten-free, and that one *may* have cross-contamination. Open Original Shared Link Does TUMS contain gluten? Although we do not use gluten as a filler in TUMS, there may be trace amounts of gluten in TUMS Smoothies Assorted Fruit and Berry Fusion flavors via ingredients that are supplied by outside vendors...
  4. The video that sent me searching can be found at the bottom of the page here: Open Original Shared Link A google search of "t-cell allergy" brings up several hits such as Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I tried a similar search on googlescholar.com and got a lot of hits too, but I don't understand enough of the terminology...
  5. Someone posted in another area of this forum a link to gluten.net. In looking around there to see what I could learn I found a video in which a comparison is made between celiac disease, gluten intolerance, IgE allergies, and t-cell allergies. Because my doctor recently chose to diagnose me with a wheat allergy vs celiac disease (I had negative bloodwork...
  6. I know. My symptoms don't match up with wheat allergy at all, but they match a lot with celiac disease. amazing isn't it? He told me that he has a wheat allergy and gets diarrhea and hives when he eats it, then told me in another part of the conversation that he just takes his burger off the bun to eat it...and he thinks they must mix some wheat into...
  7. Quick recap: I had a biopsy last month that showed esophagitis in the lower third of my esophagus, some gastritis in the antrum, and flattened duodenal folds. Biopsies were taken to test for h. pylori and celiac. Prior to the EGD I had cut back on bread drastically for about 18 mos. because it was giving me heartburn, and had been eating gluten-free for ...
  8. Wow, I'm new to this and this is news to me, anyone have a link that explains this connection? I'd read that some celiac/gluten sensitive folks also had other food sensitivities but hadn't heard of a connection based on similarity of the makeup of the foods. I've been avoiding gluten since the beginning of June. In the past I've had some d crop up after...

    ARCHIVED Glutened

Two things I see that could be potentially contributing to your anger: 1. hormone fluctuations. I've had this happen to me twice, once when I started taking synthroid for hypothyroidism and again adjusting to eating gluten-free. I suspect that because both times I'd been so exhausted and numb for such a long time before that once my body began to have...
  10. I am sick... again Yesterday while my dh was frying up bacon, I was loading the dishwasher. After that I laid down for an hour for a nap. When I woke up I had a lump in my throat that got worse after I ate an omelette with bacon in it. I had total 3 strips of bacon, two in the omelette and one on the side. This afternoon d hit hard, and now I'm sore and...
  11. I hadn't eaten gluten for about 3 months before my biopsy. My doctor assured me he had just done biopsies on 2 women who had been gluten-free for 12 and 18 months and it was still very plain, so since gluten causes me to have esophageal spasms I was willing to take the chance. I was still sore afterward and assumed, as you did, that it was soreness at the...
  12. I'm still pretty new at all this (avoiding gluten since 6/1/09), but joint pains were one of my complaints that disappeared when I quit eating gluten. Lately my first signs that I've gotten cross contaminated are a slight dizziness and sharp pains in my knees and/or feet when I stand up after sitting for a while.
  13. Well the bad news is that I've been gluten-free, or as near as I've been able to figure out, since June 1. All this started as a desperate attempt to find a way to stop some miserable esophageal spasms that were not being relieved by Prilosec. Once my doctor had done the blood tests (negative, but I'd been eating very little gluten for a couple of years just...
  14. Some of the Findings: Esophagus: Esophagitis was found in the lower third of esophagus. Stomach: Gastritis was found in the antrum. A biopsy was taken. The specimen was collected for CLO test. The body of the stomach, cardia, and fundus appeared to be normal. Duodenum: The duodenal bulb appeared to be normal. Flattened folds were found. Biopsies obtained...
  15. I am 100% convinced I am reacting to gluten. The question is what the cause is. I have been gluten-free for about 2 months now and I simply do not think I can tolerate a long enough gluten challenge to be effective. At this point one small cross-contamination leads to a night of misery and 2 days of incapacitating lethargy. I just found evidence in my baby...

ARCHIVED Need A Doctor In Nashville

Thank you for the link. I have emailed someone from the group nearest where I need to go, so hopefully they'll be able to share some useful information. I had found a website for a group in a nearby suburb earlier, but they didn't have any information about doctors on their site and my email to one of their contact members was not returned. Thanks...

ARCHIVED Need A Doctor In Nashville

The Gi my doctor referred me to scheduled me for a scope of my esophagus and a ph monitor, but they called me the day before the procedure to say that my insurance doesn't cover the hospital he works in. Does anyone know of a doctor that practices at Centennial or another TriStar Hospital that is also familiar with celiac issues? Thanks!

ARCHIVED So I Saw The Gi Doc

I realize that having the genes doesn't necessarily mean I have the disease. I'm hoping that showing that I have the genes, combined with my symptoms and response to a gluten-free diet, will convince a doctor to take my symptoms seriously and at least consider the possibility. What frustrated me most was that it seemed like he took the facts that I was nervous...

ARCHIVED So I Saw The Gi Doc

I have been eating gluten-free, or as close as I know how, since the beginning of June and have no intention of adding it back into my diet unless/until sensitivity has been totally ruled out of what is going on for me. I am following through with a doctor for a few reasons: 1. These spasms are still going on, so I don't know whether it's just still a...

ARCHIVED So I Saw The Gi Doc

He started with the 'so what's going on' question, so I told him about my trip to the ER and diagnosis of esophageal spasms. He seemed totally unconvinced that was what was happening, but didn't offer any other explanation for what happened. I also tried to tell him about trying a gluten-free diet and how that seemed to make more difference than the meds...
  21. It makes sense to me. I only drink coffee or caffeinated drinks (tea or dr pepper) a few times a week annd haven't noticed any issues yet, but I have noticed if I drink a glass of wine I start feeling really loopy for about an hour and had about decided to just take a couple sips of my dh's instead of my own glass.
  22. I know this probably sound bizarre, but knowing it took 6 mos for your spasms to completely stop is probably the most encouraging thing I've heard in a while lol My doctor gave me the impression that they should have stopped after 2 weeks on prilosec, and surely would after 30 days, so I thought there was something I was missing. I plan to ask the Gi to do...
  23. I haven't yet. I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist on July 8th and I am hopeful that he'll be willing to do those tests and not just prescribe pills. I want to get to the bottom of what is going on, not just treat symptoms for the rest of my life.
  24. I know this is long, and I apologize for that, but I am desperate to make these spasms stop and I'm hopeful that something here will give someone a clue to help me find out how. About 2 months ago I went to the ER because I thought I was having a heart attack. It turned out to be esophageal spasms. They gave me an antacid cocktail, a prescription for...
  25. The website I was using to check my foods said caramel coloring was suspect, so when I felt bad and found that ingredient listed I suspected it However, like I said, I wanted to be sure it wasn't something else (such as acidic foods late in the day, because both pop and vinegar could irritate an already upset digestive system, right?) so I tried my challenge...
