  1. Others have encouraged you already about the diet, so I'd like to address the guilt you feel about your children possibly (have they been diagnosed already too?) having celiac as well. I have 5 sons who, since we now have a gluten-free household, have all shown varying degrees of sensitivity as well. While I would wish that they did not have to deal with...
  2. All of the above. I've only been gluten-free for about 9 months now, and now that we have a gluten-free house all of my sons (ages 8-18) have displayed varying degrees of sensitivity as well. Currently 3 of the 5 of them have chosen to avoid gluten and the other 2 limit how often they eat it. So far when we've been invited to someone's home, people...
  3. There are a lot of seeds that pass through the digestive system without being changed much. The hard shell on the seed is able to withstand digestive juices. Are you eating something with sesame seeds, flax seeds, or something similar in or on it? I know back when I ate burgers if I ate one with a sesame seed bun I would see the seeds in my stool.
  4. I've been gluten-free for 9 months now and doing much better overall. My last checkup showed that I'm anemic again and the nurse who called with my results said to take a supplement or multivitamin. I've been piecemealing my supplements and had discovered that all the B supplements that came in pill or capsule form upset my stomach, so I've been using liquid...
  5. If you like dark chocolate, we've used both Ghirardelli and Lindt dark chocolate bars (from the candy section, not the baking) and had no problems. We usually melt them to use in a cake, but they're good just on their own too. I will qualify my recommendation by saying I bought them based on my reading of the ingredients and the fact that I haven't reacted...
  6. Yep, sounds about right to me. In my case, my tummy just never returned to normal after my 4th baby, which I attributed to it being my 4th baby . However, I had finally begun to suspect something wasn't normal a few months before I went gluten-free and had measured myself to see whether it was all in my mind. I found that I could gain 2-5 inches on my waist...
  7. One point of clarification. Short-term use of a layer feed for chicks (when you run out of chick feed etc) is something you could probably get by with. However, chick feed is not different *only* because they boost the protein, it also has grit added. Chickens need some kind of grit (small stones, sand, etc) to grind the food in their crop. If a chick is...
  8. I've been feeding my chickens a whole grain mix for a few years now. While it did include wheat, I will be leaving it out now that I have learned what I have. Last summer I still made my usual mix, including corn, wheat, milo, millet, black oil sunflower, and oats. This winter we've just bought the bag of layer pellets, but I've had a non-gluten-free son...
  9. While I'm naturally an introvert, I had become practically a recluse because it just took SO much energy to get out (getting 5 children ready to go out didn't make it easier lol). I am finally able to actually enjoy being out and about, spending time with friends without being so exhausted I had to come home and crash for hours afterward, and having the energy...
  10. I do know that the fun size bars usually come in a variety bag, including at least one variety with gluten krispies in it. If that's where yours come from it may just be a case of cross contamination that will clear up quickly once you quit eating those. I would suggest keeping a supply of safe candies handy, either in your purse or your cubicle, so when...
  11. Because I'm having trouble with nightshades as well, traditional pizza would be out for me even if I made it myself. However I could make a spinach/white sauce pizza to take with me or to share, or take something to eat so I won't just have to watch others eat. The best strategy I've found to work for me at this point is: A. Take along a gluten-free...
  12. I've been gluten-free for about 6 months now. I can only share that my experience was that while I got some better after going gluten-free, I got dramatically better after I gave up my oatmeal. I'd eaten oatmeal nearly every morning for breakfast for about 3 years. Some of the things I've found to replace it (warm cereal, soothing and substantial to start...
  13. I would advise caution with using this alternative. I've worked in a pizza place and the chances of cross contamination would keep me from trying any of the sauce/veggies even in a bowl. We stretched the doughs out on a board, then used a spoon to spread sauce on it (spoon will be glutened, therefore so will the sauce) and the same hands we just covered in...
  14. I wouldn't discount the possibility of other food sensitivities, however I will share that early in my healing I found that if I ate either corn or rice more often than every 3-4 days I got some tiredness/brain fog. However, over time and healing, now I can eat it at will without noticeable problem. Is it possible that your breakfast problem wasn't the milk...
  15. I would have to say yes and no. My problem with my eyes pre-gluten-free was that after some time on my computer my right eye would not readjust to distance vision for several hours (or until after a nap). I have virtually no trouble with it now except when I am recovering from exposure to one of my sensitivities (gluten or nightshades). I have also noticed...
  16. Thanks, Lisa, that is promising that patience may pay off. Neroli, it looks to me (from your sig info) like you're still fairly recently off nightshades as well? So maybe after some more time you will be able to add a limited amount back in. I first noticed that potatoes caused abdominal bloating shortly after eating, and overall water retention and...
  17. Once I got the gluten out of my system, I became aware of a similar, but slightly milder, reaction to nightshade vegetables. I am avoiding them (mostly) but feeling the loss of tomatoes and bell peppers even more than wheat. I'm wondering whether this is an outright allergy, another sensitivity or intolerance, or just being unable to digest them at this stage...
  18. When I learned that I had to eat gluten-free it had less of an impact on me because I had previously had gestational diabetes and had learned, through that and other dietary changes we'd made to try to eat healthier (like buying a grinder so I could make my own freshly ground, whole wheat bread ), some coping strategies that worked *for me*. Each of us is...
  19. Probably because I'm still relatively new at this, and because my response to the diet has been so very dramatic, but I am more apt to have to bite my tongue in the store to keep from running up to all the people I see with symptoms I previously suffered (bloated belly, obesity, joint and muscle aches...) and urging them to put the gluteny goodies back. I...
  20. I don't think anything you've said should upset anyone here. We all have varying levels of tolerance for change. I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy, and I realized through that experience that I'd rather have a tiny serving of 'real' dairy than a regular-sized serving of lite versions. To me, that stuff is not worth my trouble and some of...
  21. The only side effect I've had that I suspected being from Prilosec was water retention. I wonder though, do you use a probiotic? The excess acid that contributed to causing your ulcer could also have upset the balance in your intestine and maybe a course of probiotics would help correct your digestion.
  22. I agree, in theory, but if the reality is that it takes 4 weeks to get to the interview appointment, and another 4-6 weeks to get the first medical appointment, it means MORE waiting around. When we're already sick enough to pursue medical treatment in the first place, a long wait may be more detrimental than just seeing a less knowledgeable (about celiac...
  23. It is entirely possible that bodies that respond to gluten by losing weight would also respond differently in healing process than those that respond by conserving weight. I wanted to add, though, that from high school until the bloating started about 10 years ago I had a 'stock up' period every fall where I was ravenously hungry and had cravings I didn't...
  24. I find it helps if I drink a lot of water, but I don't know how much success you'll have with a 2yo trying to get him to drink when he's not thirsty...
  25. I'm not sure what to call overt and what to call covert, so here's a synopsis of my life. lol I'm 47, and when I began researching celiac disease ... well, the more I read the farther back I could see possible signs. Mostly I think it fired up when I left home for college, but I had iron deficiency even in childhood and my baby book shows that I saw...
