ARCHIVED Wal-mart Dedicated gluten-free Section
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've definitely noticed Walmart usually has cheaper gluten-free foods. Walmart has the corn/rice spaghetti for almost a $1 cheaper then Hy-Vee here and the Mrs Leepers "Hamburger Helper" I call it was I believe $3.39 which on the gluten-free Mall is $4.82 (plus shipping, etc...) right now. So it can definitely add up over time depending, but If Walmart keeps... -
ARCHIVED Wal-mart Dedicated gluten-free Section
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think it's hurting the economy. I just don't prefer to shop there. Living in Iowa (not sure where you live), I love shopping at Hy-Vee for groceries. The atmosphere is better so the slightly higher prices is worth it for me. I don't boycott Walmart obviously but its not my first place to go to. -
So I was doing some searching on Google and stumbled on this restaurant in Sharon, PA. Their gluten-free menu is just overflowing with goodness (at least reading it). Makes me wish I could just take a trip out there to try their food. I didn't see the restaurant on here yet when I searched so I figured if anyone in PA wants to try some gluten-free Italian...

ARCHIVED Glutened And Felt...nothing!?
Jonbo replied to jennavive00's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'd still stay as safe as reasonably possible because you never know. I've mostly had only very mild reactions if I have some minor CC or no symptoms at all, but I still play it safe because its hard to say what could happen. One day you get little to nothing on a response, the next it could be totally different. -
ARCHIVED Wal-mart Dedicated gluten-free Section
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If I get there at least once more (can't drive on my own while taking Percocet...legally at least), I'll snap a picture or 2. -
ARCHIVED Wal-mart Dedicated gluten-free Section
Jonbo posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I'm in town staying with a family member while recovering from my Incisional Hernia repair surgery, which suffice to say the first few days of recovery were NOT fun but I'm slowly recovering with the help of Percocet. Back to the topic...The Wal-Mart here in Council Bluffs (Iowa) is being renovated. I don't visit Wal-Mart much (obvious reasons) but needed... -
ARCHIVED Weird Ways We've Been Glutened
Jonbo replied to OptimisticMom42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had a few "duh" ones. One was friend offering some craisins from bag she had. Me knowing they are OK, I eat a handful. Not 1 minute after that, my mind thinks outside the box. She's eating fried food and reached in before me. Needless to say not long after it went a little downhill but recovered by the next day fully. When I inquired, she said "Oh yeah... -
ARCHIVED Got My Food Allergy Testing Done Today!
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Skin test I think? One where they take like 8 at once and just lightly puncture the skin enough. Then repeated it 4 times and waited 10 minutes to let the results come through. -
ARCHIVED Got My Food Allergy Testing Done Today!
Jonbo posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
and the results? Clean slate! After reading how many seem to have secondary issues, I figured it didn't hurt to get tested (and out only a $20 copay for peace of mind). At first my mind did a double take when I noticed Wheat and Barley came back negative then realized that I don't have an allergy to it Granted, I wasn't seemingly having any secondary... -
Check Your Cottage Cheese
Jonbo replied to Jennifer2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Roberts Cottage Cheese is safe thankfully (have it daily with no reactions as of yet). Can't stand any other brand but Roberts so far. -
ARCHIVED Redbridge Beer At Qwest Field (seattle)!
Jonbo replied to CLeeB's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That's great to hear! I love Bards alot more the Redbridge (just a little too light for me). Granted, if this was my only option, I'd take it. -
ARCHIVED Do You Live In A Gluten Free Or Shared Kitchen?
Jonbo replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unfortunately for now in a shared kitchen but I try and maintain my own self. Thankfully though I live with my dad (college/money saving purposes) so it makes it more bearable since I have my own mini-fridge. Fridge was bought long before celiac diagnosis because I went extremely healthy and when living with another parent at the time, I was taking up too... -
Taco John's Potatoe Oles
Jonbo replied to minnowjoy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This warning screams don't even think about it...Potato Oles were awesome there though when I could have them. -
ARCHIVED My Doctor Actually Listened To Me This Time!
Jonbo replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, he has been in the profession for at least 30 years So he probably doesn't quite grasp just what you can fully do online yet Congrats though for the "official what you already knew" diagnosis! (sounds weird congratulating someone for being diagnosed with Celiac...) -
ARCHIVED Skeptics: Food Crisis In Second Half Of 2009
Jonbo posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
This isn't 100% related to Celiac but I figured some could get a small chuckle out of what skeptics are saying, since this will probably not affect us (well, family wise it could if there are non-celiac's that are under the same roof) Much more info (just skim some) available here. Open Original Shared Link Wouldn't it... -
ARCHIVED Crackpot Theory?
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That makes sense too, thanks for the suggestions so far. I never had any real medical issues until I was 17 (but not really related) and as said ramped up after the twisted intestine incident. I don't even recall anything that gave me warnings, it just really hit hard in December and by the end of December it was becoming hell on me. I'm definitely more... -
ARCHIVED Crackpot Theory?
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, I hope I never experience the ungodly pain associated with a twisted intestine again. That was the worst 4-5 days of my life...and I had back surgery to put 2 rods/16 screws to correct scoliosis (too late for the brace). But I've decided rather then wait for the GI appt in September to find out why my abdomen still becomes extremely distended daily and... -
ARCHIVED Crackpot Theory?
Jonbo replied to Jonbo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The surgery 'seems' like the more likely theory that triggered it. Considering the surgeon told me afterwards in his 10+ years (I think he has been a surgeon closer to 15) there, he's never seen anyone with twisted intestines since it mostly occurs in pigs and other mammals. Great boost of confidence on that Obviously I asked him how it came about but he... -
ARCHIVED Are Big Companies Starting To Label Gluten Free?
Jonbo replied to Jennifer2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They are slowly doing so which is great. 2 simple words on a packaging can take out 98% of the guesswork, with that 2% thinking of cross contamination they don't disclose being a possibility. I believe it was General Mills recently that discovered (to no surprise to the people of this forum and other Celiac site forums) that if a product is labeled gluten... -
ARCHIVED Crackpot Theory?
Jonbo posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
(a little long, sorry) Ever since my dx back in April, I've been trying to wrap my head around possible reasons I out of the blue got Celiac. Considering it started in December of '08 and dx in April (lucky to be dx so quickly compared to others...), and no one else in the family has it, just made me start thinking of this possible theory. March... -
I may or may not be driving to Orlando in the next few months, and since Gainesville is what I would go through from IA to there, I may have to stop in and say FMcGee referred me

ARCHIVED Can You Be Glutened Topically?
Jonbo replied to TotalKnowledge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The doc needs to find me then to figure out why smelling it sets it off since I'm not just getting a reaction to ingesting it. As for the topical thing based on what the OP has said, there must have been something else that set it off since it seems weird that you would crash so hard right after it. Probably going to have to do it again with the same situation... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed And I Do Not Want To Believe It
Jonbo replied to Liz790's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's hard to believe. I didn't want to believe it at first either when I read about it because all I have (had now) is abdominal distention/pain when glutened. Considering I don't have alot of the "classic" symptoms most who have Celiac do, it was a definite surprise. Only took me 5 months to be diagnosed after many attempts to diagnose. You'll adjust... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Source Of Gluten
Jonbo replied to NYCCeliacMom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Is the camp making the gluten-free Lunch in the same area as non-gluten-free foods? Moreso it's likely cross contamination going on if they claim it's gluten-free but she's still getting Glutened.
