You asked if the "white bread has any gluten in it". Yes it does and this is apparently a misconception... that wheat bread (because it says wheat in it) contains gluten whereas white bread does not. Sadly both do, they are both made from wheat flour and both contain gluten.
Once when I was in Trader Joes and was asking an employee about a sauce that may or may not contain gluten she told me she was "schooled" on gluten by Trader Joe's and that she knew for a fact I could eat white bread but not wheat bread. Huh? She said yes as long as it was white it was fine, well I knew she was totally wrong and went and talked to the manager who said he would speak to her about it. But don't fall into that trap, white bread or any bread made from wheat flour has gluten.
Furthermore subway has so much flour flying around I'd never chance eating there.
Good luck

Well it certainly sounds right to me... why don't you start with asking your doctor to do the blood tests for Celiac ... and see what they turn up (remember to continue to eat gluten until you've had the tests). Depending on what the results are you can go from there.

I have copied down the list of restaurants that have been posted here but was really looking forward to eating at Blooms Deli on 350 Lexington Ave, because I can have french fries... but the web site isn't working and I heard that they were undergoing some renovations, does anyone know if they are open??
Also we only have a few days but any suggestions of things to do with a 14 year old, my daughter, would be great! We are going shopping and will see a lot of the tourist sites, but anything else that is a must see? Do you think she will enjoy a few hours at MOMA? She wants to see the wax museum so we will do that too (kids!).
Also if Blooms is closed are there any other deli's that are gluten-free?

I just want to chime in on Angelina's lips here I'd bet my last dollar they are not enhanced as a matter of fact the skinny on her is that she had her top lip made smaller to match her bottom one. If you look at her pictures when she was a girl you will see that the top lip is actually bigger then it is now! Her lips are naturally very large.. my 14 year old daughter has a friend with lips that very same size (and they fit the rest of her features and are very pretty). Angelina is said to have had cheek implants (I of course can't say if this is true) but I don't think there is any lip enhancing going on at all.
I hate to be a naysayer about people marriages.. so I won't really comment on the Jolie/Pitt arrangement... but I think he will have his hands full, Brad is a regular guy (he may be a hollywood star now but he grew up as a regular kid) and Angelina is a Hollywood kid, we all know that she has done some weird things.. wearing billy bob's blood, the tattoos, when she got pregnant she ran out and got a tattoo in latin that says, "that which nourishes me destroy's me" its right across her belly. Now that to me is a bit odd. Yes I think Brad has got a major challenge in Angie.

Its a huge change for most of us, so I guess sadness is part of the deal for a lot of us. I was so sick that I welcomed anything that would make me feel better, however, that doesn't mean that I don't miss pizza and beer or sourdough bread, I do!
I think eventually most of us move on and learn to enjoy new things... a lot of us really get into cooking and baking so we can explore new things. Allow yourself to feel bad for a while.
About your wedding... remember its YOUR wedding, not your mother in laws... so I suggest you do exactly what YOU want to, I'd certainly get a cake I could eat at my wedding! Its your celebration and you should have it your way!

Hmmm I didn't think there was a shot that could change your food allergies?
At any rate your allergist still may put you on a rotation diet after your testing results come back, mine did. I turned up allergic to a lot of stuff and I was told to leave it out of my diet for a few weeks, I was also give a drug (short acting, very few if any side effects) called Gastrocrom to take before meals. Which was supposed to help with allergic responses.... I also took zantac, all this to heal up my leaky gut.
Then after a few weeks I was able to start adding back, slowly the things I tested "low" positive too. And many of them I can now tolerate... some completely, some in small amounts. Certain things that I tested high positive to, like peanuts they want me to avoid forever.
I think the theory is (well at least its mine) ... that often diseases like Celiac or other GI problems causes your gut to be far to permeable, so when you eat molecules of food (molecules that are far too large) escape your gut and get into your blood stream. Normally your body never deals with such large food molecules because they stay in your gut, but when its leaky they do not.
Your body doesn't recognize these larges food particles and mounts an attack against them and that's your allergic reaction. So I think the hope is that if your gut gets totally healed these large food particles won't leak out and cause that allergic response.
For me that's how its working... many of the foods I tested "low" positive too I can now eat, but many of those in the mid range still bother me.
Hope this helps, its early and I'm rambling...

I get mine at Stop and Shop on Cape cod.

Well the two places are so different, I go to Boston about once or twice a month at least (I'm on Cape Cod) and I went to college and lived right in town for 20 years... and I'm not tired of it yet. Its a fun city with lots of things to do, from shopping, art musems and galleries, science, aquarium, children's museums, tons of historical stuff, of course a bunch of touristy stuff (duck boats, harbor boat rides, walking tours) we have a few really nice big parks in the city (Espanade, public garden, Boston Common) and small pocket parks all throughout the city. We have great eating... cheap, mid and very expensive, plus the North End (Italian), Chinatown, because of all the colleges directly in the city we have virtually every type of ethnic dining you can imagine and great people watching.
Its a smallish city but still I'd come armed with a plan, I travel a lot and I've found when visiting cities if I arrive without a general plan of what I want to do I wander around and miss a lot of stuff.

I've eaten at the one in Hingham, MA and I've never had a problem... the first time I was there not one person there had heard of gluten!! However it was just before the lunch hour and I explained to them about flour and that it can't even touch my food. The manager said ok this is no problem and it wasn't. I had a wonderful meal (fajita plate) and I am very gluten sensitive and I didn't have a problem. I've been back like 4 times always before or slightly after lunch hour (its so crowded I'm worried they might not be as careful) and again I've been fine.

I'm allergic to pork as well, I tested allergic to it and if I eat it I get really sick. Someone said that they don't think it makes a difference what the cow ate before we eat it and I have to disagree, most cows are fed tons of antibiotics and hormones and I don't see how you can think thats good for you?
I eat organic as often as possible and that includes beef and poultry.

does anyone know if these flours have cross contamination issues with peanuts/tree nuts? It lists them as wheat free (some soy free, whatever) but it doesn't mention nuts. We have found it almost impossible to bake hardly anything because of the issues most mixes and flours have with cross contamination.

Wow I found the Franklin Farms burgers in my local grocery store but they don't say gluten-free on them... are all flavors gluten free?

Depending where the eosinophil cells are it can cause problems almost anywhere including in other organs. Eosinophil cells are often related to allergies... so if they find them they start tons of allergy testing. I actually had ulcer like problems all thru out my stomach and small and large intestine. Prior to getting the results back from pathology my GI said you have a lot of ulcers in there but they are different looking... none were bleeding, I saw the pictures of them that were taken they certainly looked raw and like other pix of ulcers I've seen.
A lot of people get the eosinophil cells in their esosophigus (wow did i fracture that spelling), so they can turn up almost anywhere. I hope they test for them, again its not always done because its fairly a rare condition but sadly becoming more and more common, they are finding out that often people that were originally diagnosed with other stuff like ulcers or IBS have guts rich with eosinophillic cells. (thats how my entire gut was described - rich in the cells). Its probably not what you have going on but since they have the tissue to test be sure that they do test for them.
Let us know how it turns out.

No gluten is not absorbed thru the skin. Some Celiac's do have skin problems when they put lotions containing wheat on their skin (rashes and dermatitis herpiformis) but I'd say most of us do not. The problem is that its very hard to keep skin lotions away from our mouths.. you have to be really careful not to apply near your mouth and then to wash your hands carefully. Some say if you even touch your face hours after you put a lotion containing wheat on it that your hands are filled with gluten.
Its my understanding that the Bare Essentials make up is gluten free, its just their skin care products that are not. However when I started using bare Essentials I got a lotion with the kit that contained wheat (I didn't realize it at first) and I do use it around my eyes and on my forehead and I've not had any problems with it. I doubt I'd buy it again because I hate being so careful but I must say I love how it works.
Hope this helps a bit,

I've never seen Sunshine burgers or Franklin Farms... are they sold in MA do you by chance know? And the ones from Whole Foods.... you said they were by the tofu... are they labeled gluten free? I've looked for a veggie burger for a year at least so I'd love to find these!
Thanks, Susan

Ask your doctor if they are going to use the biopsy's to check for eosinophilic gastroenteritis. I had them along with some in my stomach and I have EG positively confirmed by the biopsy's. They don't always look for it because its fairly rare.

I've tried a ton of gluten-free breads and in my opinion the very best are Breads by Anna (Open Original Shared Link) or Whole Foods market gluten-free breads. Rice breads just don't toast well and they tend to fall apart. My favorite from the above is Anna's breads however its a mix and you have to make them first (I do it in my bread machine) so if you need a quick fix and are near a Whole Foods market thats the next best.

Mine was easy as pie, they knocked me out! I was fine afterwards, a bit groggy but the next day I was back to normal, no sore throat. I was knocked out before they did anything, no throat spray nothing. Very simple.

I've been wanting to order the gluten-free soy sauce packets from them... I already have the tabasco and A-1 Sauce from them... I can't really find anything to "fill in" my order to get the free shipping... I see they don't carry Annie's salad dressings and I'm not sure about the other salad dressings on the site... Some are Kraft but they have modified food starch in them and other stuff.... does anyone know which are gluten-free so I can fill in my order
Thanks, Susan
