I've been told that fructose (the sugar in fruit ) is safer, and doesn't cause weigth gain like regular cane sugar does. I'm a bit over-weight by the way. I haven't used it since being gluten-free, but I'm thinking I'll be going back to it, as I did loose some weight while on it. I have had the opposite problem with my bowel for years, pturse. Only...

ARCHIVED Communion Wafers? Detox Time?
Maggie1956 replied to Tricia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not sure if there are other things that may be bad about rice crakers, but I know I've had to make sure that I don't eat the ones which had soy in them. Here in Australia, we have a brand called Sa-Ka-Ta. I love them. They have become a treat for me. But there is a ' seaweed' flavor which has soy in it. I ate some the other day, and I'm still... -
ARCHIVED Communion Wafers? Detox Time?
Maggie1956 replied to Tricia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got some discomfort yesterday after the tiniest piece of communion bread. I think it was Lebonese bread. So in future, I'm going to take a rice cracker. I believe it's not WHAT we eat as communion wafers, it's about remembering our Lord. Yes, I'm sure He understands that some of us are made a bit different. -
I'm trying to cut my sugar intake down. I need to loose some weight for a start, and I also get a lot of pain and gas if I eat too much sugar. Particularly if it's in sweets such as jelly beans and such. I love white chocolate buddies. (Little chocolate drops made for cooking etc) , but I've found that I feel like I've been run over by a steam roller...

Hello Bob, Yes. All those symptoms are the same as what I have also. I was only d/xed Dec 2004, so it is all very new to me as well. There is a lot of great information here at celiac.com Take a look at the Site Index. Follow the list down to:- A Summary of Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance by Scott Adams. That's where I... -
ARCHIVED This Gene Is Inherited From Where?
Maggie1956 replied to azedazobollis's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, it is the same for me too. I'm the only known celiac in my family as well. I think my Dad was a celiac. He died this past August 2004. There is no way I'd have his body exhumed either. His two brothers, also deceased, had "problems with their swallowing". My Dad and one of these uncles gagged on food a lot while eating. I reckon that was... -
I can't handle having more than two mugs of coffee (instant) a day, or I got a severe stomach ache. Have you thought it may have something to do with the coffee rather than the milk? Just a thought....

Maggie1956 replied to midnightjewel40's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hey, I found a Nude food Store today, right here on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia!! It's got a lot of great gluten-free things including breakfast cereals, different types of flour, cookies (I miss good old ANZAC biscuits, but found some gluten-free ones there..YUMM), icecream, lollies..etc., etc.. They even had my favorite dessert... -
ARCHIVED What About Millet?
Maggie1956 replied to u396's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I saw a Food For Life store here in Queensland, Australia last week as we were driving by, after buying groceries (always the way isn't it?) I'm so excited to find a good gluten-free store that may be ok for us lot...celiacs. I'll have to go and have a look in there next time. It's not always easy to find a large variety gluten-free foods here... -
Yes, that sure makes sense Tom, and everyone else. Having eaten all sorts of things containing gluten all my life, plus having things which my body had some intolerences to, would cause the stomach to be raw, and my villi to be damaged. As you said tarnelberry, it has a lot to do with the genes as well. My dad had big problems with allergies and...

I'm wondering why some people have just the gluten intolerence and that's it, while others have a lot of other food/medication intolerences. Are some people more pre-disposed to having the added problems? Maybe it's their family background? I have a few problems with other food and medications, so I thought I might get some answers here. I've had...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Trouble With Popcorn?
Maggie1956 replied to LJCurly9's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a lot of trouble with popcorn. I love the hot, buttered kind, but if I eat it, I get really bad pain which doubles me over. Also can't eat corn niblets and peas together, but the corn seems ok on it's own if it's just boiled niblets. -
ARCHIVED Joint Pain
Maggie1956 replied to I'm more celiac than you's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know that when I haven't had Glucosamine for a few days...(such as when I've run out a few days before pay day ) I really ache. It's good to hear that it is gluten-free Deb. I've started having calcium/magnesium capsules also. They are helping with the pains. I helped my friend clean a large house last Monday, and the pain has been really... -

ARCHIVED Extended Family -- What If They Refuse To Adjust?
Maggie1956 replied to cdford's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just love your reply! What a brilliant come-back. I haven't really got a fantastic answer for this problem with your parents, other than to say that they should be ashamed of themselves to treat their own granddaughter like this. You are doing a great job in teaching your daughter to be sensible about her eating, and they should support you... -
Hey, I found a really yummy gluten-free breakfast cereal out here in OZ. (Australia) I got it from a health food store. I've also been having tinned fruit, mostly pears as they are easier for me to digest first thing in the morning. So, life is not so bad when I don't have to cook breakfast every morning. I'm not a morning person at all. ...

Thanks Maria! Yummm that sounds delicious. I know I'll have to try it.

ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes/juice Plus
Maggie1956 replied to acemommy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Because I'm new to this, and I'm also real docile I need to ask .... What are enzymes, and what do they do? I am trying to make sure I only eat gluten-free, but most times, when I've just finished, I still feel like I've swallowed a camel most of the time. Would enzymes help this??? -
Now that would be bad!! lol I sometimes dream that I've 'been' to the bathroom, but still need to go. That's usually when I really DO need to get up and 'go' for real. Thanks for that. It gave me a much needed chuckle.

ARCHIVED How Did You Cope With Your Diagnosis;
Maggie1956 replied to Born2run2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes! I am going through the 'blues' at the moment to a certain extent. I've been gluten-free for a whole 12 days, but in the last 2-3 days, I've been feeling really sore in bones and muscles all over, and I'm really teary. I guess part of it is because I'm feeling aweful, but I realise it's also a type of mourning too. I'll never again live... -
ARCHIVED Help Please
Maggie1956 replied to Ron's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Stef, I can handle a couple of dessertspoons of white rice (not sure about the brown, as I've only eaten it once). Medaka, I sure will be buying a heap of gluten-free cookbooks (after Christmas!!). I know they'll be really helpful, even though I've never been much of a cook. Being celiac means doing more home-cooking right? Thanks to you both... -
ARCHIVED Joint Pain
Maggie1956 replied to I'm more celiac than you's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi llj.., I take a brand called NUTRA-LIFE, but it is manufactured in New Zealand. I guess it isn't available in USA. I don't think it is gluten-free. It doesn't say it is anyway. Drat! It also says it contains: dextrose, maltodexrtin, Glucosamine Sulphate, MSM ( Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) Chondroitin sulphate, Ascorpic Acid, Bioflavonoids... -
ARCHIVED Help Please
Maggie1956 replied to Ron's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Tom, I think what you're trying to say is "get a breadmaker" . Is that right? LOL Sorry. I agree, shop-bought gluten-free bread os horrible! I never thought I'd miss bread at all as I've never eaten it much. Probably because it always made me feel like I'd swallowed a baseball. I know there are good gluten-free bread mixes... -
I'm so pleased you're doing and feeling so well McDougall. Great job! Maggie
