ARCHIVED Nature Valley Granola Bars..gf?
Merika replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, the way we used to make the hot sauce STICK to the chicken wings was by coating them in flour before dipping them in hotsauce and then frying them. I assumed that's how all wings were made. The flour wasn't really a visible part of the wing once it was cooked either - not like a KFC chicken or anything... Merika -

ARCHIVED I Think I Am Worrying Far To Much
Merika replied to nickhills1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nick, It doesn't need to be bread. could be pasta, beer, graham crackers, just the equivalent of several slices of bread a day. I don't know about France, but I hear that celiac is better known in Europe than the US, and so I would think a test would be available. Funny, French bread used to make me feel real bloated, but I was ok with sourdough and other... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed 14 Year Old
Merika replied to momofbll's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There is a book you can get from amazon, and maybe even this website, called Personal Stories on....Celiac. It 's short (3-5 page) stories from different folks on their experience being diagnosed. There is a whole chapter from teenagers in it. You will find it an interesting read yourself, I'd bet - my dh said it was very helpful in giving him a clear picture... -
ARCHIVED ? About Peanuts/peanut Butter?
Merika replied to kimber's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, First, a person may NOT have a wheat allergy and yet still have celiac. I test neg. for wheat too, but test positive for celiac (celiac is not an allergy). The possible soy and dairy allergies are in line with having celiac..... Personally, most of Pamela's products make me sick. I'm not sure what it is in them...my mom can't eat them either (celiac... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Affects Breastmilk Supply And Quality
Merika replied to Engineer2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Indea, Don't feel guilty...you did a great job finding out about celiac for your son when he was just 16 mos. Many others don't figure it out til much later. (For examply, i was diagnosed at age 31.....) You didn't create this in him, it's just how he is, and you've set him up for a wonderful long healthy life now that he eats gluten-free Paula, the... -
ARCHIVED Depression...is It Normal?does It Get Better?
Merika replied to tsgillen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If she is NOT getting any gluten, and not eating and losing weight, the simple fact of not getting enough nutrients and calories can lead to apathy and depression. Add in that if her gut was severely damaged, even after two years of gluten-free, her intestines may not be completely healed and she therefore may not be absorbing all the the small number of... -
ARCHIVED How Can You Tell The Difference Between
Merika replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You will only get a positive on the elisa test if you are in fact allergic to it, regardless of how often you eat it. Of course, with celiac, the more often you eat something, the more likely you are to develop a food allergy to it. (Hence, people have come up with rotation diets.) I had it really bad, and tested positive to nearly everything, but tomatoes... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Affects Breastmilk Supply And Quality
Merika replied to Engineer2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Paula, Are you from the ec list, cause we were just discussing this exact thing over there! Here's an article you may find interesting. Click the link to it on www.merikaonline.com/pages/allergy.html Allergies (which go along with celiac) DO cause oversupply and abundant milk. I had it too when I was nursing. Everyone was so impressed because... -
ARCHIVED How Can You Tell The Difference Between
Merika replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Lorka, Well, I don't know if you have an intolerance or an allergy....it's very likely to have allergies to proteins such as milk and soy after having celiac damage to your body. I ate soy for years with I thought no problem. Then I did an allergy tested and tested way positive for it. I already knew by then my ds was allergic to it, and since he was... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Worried?
Merika replied to kelley's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Request the test. Be confident! If you have difficulty with the doctor (and you may not) tell him a first cousin or parent or sibling has it. Then you automatically fall into a "risk" group which should be tested. Merika -
ARCHIVED Elisa Gluten Test Kit For Food
Merika replied to jmj0803's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Where do you live? I'd suggest having someone from a local celiac support group come to your house and look at ALL the labels of food and see what's going on in your house. I would also talk with the teachers and see if your dd is eating something at school or swapping lunches with someone.....just in case..... Hope you get it figured out, Merika -
Yes, you can get glutened from inhaling flour. I wouldn't worry about someone eating bread at the table with you, but I would be surprised if you didn't get glutened at the bread factory. My mom used to visit a Kraft factory for her job, and everytime she'd get sick, because of the flour in the air (she's celiac too). Merika

Ginger tea (from fresh ginger, yummmm) is good and also safe during pregnancy. I found acupuncture helped a lot too - especially the first trimester. Merika

ARCHIVED B12 Deficiency And Medical Incompetance
Merika replied to canadianbowlofcherries's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hmm I wrote a piece on this recently on another thread. Doctors seem to have trouble diagnosing young adults (like 18-25) with anything other than psychiatric trouble. Your story is much like mine (without the brain surgery) but I was 31 before I was diagnosed, almost by accident. i had given up on western docs. And when I first had major trouble with celiac... -
ARCHIVED If She Doesn't Have Celiac, What Could It Be?
Merika replied to carrielynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This happened with me too. Relief lasted more or less until my period came back, and then I completely bottomed out - mentally and physically. Your friend could have celiac, IBS, parasites, or something else. Sounds like celiac, but who knows? Merika -
ARCHIVED Can Pregnacy Cure Gluten Sensitivity
Merika replied to maxwell1200's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Pregnancy won't cure you. But the body does change drastically, and you may very well feel better right now. Celebrate it but stay gluten-free! My doc has actually suggested that I get preg again, because my body functions better with all those hormones and whatnot swirling around. In fact, last time around (while eating gluten), I felt better than... -
ARCHIVED What Can Be Going Wrong....
Merika replied to bluesky8130's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
bluesky, It is unlikely your dh has the refractory sprue. From your post, he's only been gluten-free a *week* because of the toothpaste. Even little amounts count. He has most likely been sick for a long time. Often doctors make it sound like you just go gluten-free and then everything is better. The damage took years to occur, and most likely will... -

ARCHIVED Just Found Out And Need Some Advice On Docs.
Merika replied to morrigan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Um, no. NO! Those allergy labels are for WHEAT not celiac. It's nice if you see it listed because you know immediately without reading the fine print not to eat it. BUT if it's not listed, you still MUST read the label to check for barley, rye and oats and their derivatives. On another note you really don't NEED to see a doctor. There is no cure and... -

ARCHIVED Pamela's Chocolate Cake Mix
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kasey's mom, I was hoping you would write in Cause I know you're facing the same gluten-free soy-free thing we are. Please let me know if you try it what your experiences with it are!!! My ds LOVED them and (picky eater that he is) exclaimed they were "the goodest thing ever" And woke up talking about them the next day, and asked to have them at his... -
You CANNOT GIVE someone celiac, except via sperm and egg and DNA creation. Breastmilk contains ALL the antibodies you make to everything. This means that if you test positive on a blood test to celiac, that your nursing child could test positive to celiac. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOUR CHILD HAS CELIAC. As your antibody levels to celiac drop in your own body...

oh yeah! soy is a HUGE problem for us - especially my son age 3 who gets major behavioral problems from it as well. There are lots of soy free and gluten-free products out there, including chocolate Whole Foods 365 brand sells a decent chocolate bar. Look out for my post on Pamela's chocolate cake mix, though, they claim to be soy free, but I'm just...

ARCHIVED Pamela's Chocolate Cake Mix
Merika posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I was so excited to find that Pamela's Chocolate Cake Mix was also soy free. Their brownie's are good but have soy. The label on the cake reads soy free and the rep I called on the phone says it's soy free. BUT my son has had a horrible soy reaction to something and this product is the only new thing in his diet this week. I am so frustrated - I can...
