ARCHIVED Los Angeles, Ca Meeting - Summer 2005
Merika posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi! There seem to be enough of us to warrant a real people meeting A bunch of folks have expressed interest. Let's pick a time and place..... Weekday or weekend? Someone's house or restaurant or coffee shop? I'm thinking daytime. I'm also thinking Hollywood/West Hollywood as it seems pretty convenient. I could offer my house also, in that... -

ARCHIVED Help For Low Cholesterol
Merika replied to emeraldskies's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is interesting. When i was hospitalized 13 yrs ago with my first big celiac symptoms, the docs discovered I had low good cholesterol and high bad cholesterol. Would this fit the criteria of malnutrition? I definitely suffered malnutrition in the years later, before diagnosis. But the docs at the time were very puzzled by why a skinny vegetarian 19-yr... -
ARCHIVED Possible Symptom?
Merika replied to Mjohnson73's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Get your son tested. It will give you and your family useful information and help you pick which path to go. There are other illnesses which cause short stature too. You may want to google around with the term "short stature" and "disease". In my Jr High there was a girl who had some rare disease that wasn't caught til right about then and her height... -

Stephanie (joining in on paranoia here, lol) You might as well be rolling around in a bed with toast, lol!!! Have you ever looked at your floor after your cats eat?? Well, maybe yours have better manners than mine, but my floor is TRASHED after just one meal.....I can't imagine cat treats in bed Merika

Hey all, Just popping back in to say I know ...about the bad stuff in Purina etc. We used to feed our cats the "good stuff".....then they started going to the neighbor's and eating Friskies, and they never ate at home....cut down on the food bills for us, lol, but there was just no point in it, so now we feed them what they ask for (sigh). Merika

Wow, I didn't know they made gluten-free cat food! But then I buy mine at the grocery store and NONE of those are gluten-free. I feed the cat and just wash my hands after. Haven't had any trouble. I also wash all the dishes in the house - gluten-free and not, with the same sponge (gasp!) and haven't had any trouble. I'm not saying the cat food couldn...

ARCHIVED Possible Cd & Endoscopy
Merika replied to GlutenGecko's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Heya, Go get your blood tests RIGHT NOW and then maybe you won't even need those invasive tests. Btw, anxiety commonly goes along with celiac, and since you mentioned that runs in your family....... Welcome, Merika -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitive Anemia
Merika replied to Nevadan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi George, My personal favorite is to use a cast iron skillet at least a few times a week for cooking - eggs, gluten-free pancakes, you name it. It cooks great, is easy to clean and will help boost your iron levels. I don't have anemia with celiac. But when I was pregnant my iron levels started to dip (pretty common) and just by using the cast iron... -
ARCHIVED Liquid Vitamins
Merika replied to Susan3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nordic Naturals does make really great fish oil. It even tastes ok and my 3 year old ate it willingly with honey BUT then I found out it has soy in it (grrr), and I have been unable to find a brand that does not - vitamin E (soy) is used as the preservative. Would love to hear if anyone has found one.... Merika -
Hi Erin, blech....I hate this sort of thing! Your baby is nursing. You have celiac. Period. They are UNRELATED. In addition, the longer you nurse your baby for, the less likely he/she is to develop celiac. This is NEW research. Maybe they will shut up if you tell them. There are cases of celiac symptoms being triggered by pregnancy or birth, but it...

ARCHIVED Here's A Possible Connection Between Celiac And
Merika replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, that might be my term, not theirs, I don't remember. But I have read articles where gluten was the problem - inducing halucinations, etc and the patient(s) had previous diagoses of schizophrenia. These symptoms largely cleared up when gluten was removed. I'll give it some thought and see if I can remember where I read this.... Merika -
Lorka, I'm allergic to rice too. I still eat it I too have tons of allergies (food, not pollen). I am experimenting with cutting out some of my allergy foods, but not all. I probably would feel better if I cut them ALL out, but then I'd be dead (haha) from starvation. I tried quinoa and a bunch of other grains initially. I found none of them sat...

So is this just a regular MD doctor who tests for b12? Is it a blood draw into a test tube type of test? Kaiti, how long did you take the vitamins for? Did you retest and find yourself in the normal range later? Are the sublingual vitamins of a modest portion of the USRDA of vitamins - like 10-100% or are they like health food store vitamins which often...

I have noticed a lot of folks on this board say they are deficient in vitamin x or y. How did you all find this out? Where did you have tests run? Other than for B12 (shots) what can be done other than time and gut healing for better nutrition? Did you find it was worthwhile? Thanks, Merika

ARCHIVED Could I Have Cd?
Merika replied to rohit77's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Rohit, Sorry you have to wait so long for the biopsy. It is possible to be celiac and not anemic - I was celiac for 12 years undiagnosed, skinny, and even while pregnant I was not anemic (and many otherwise healthy women are then). As for chinese meds, I love them and take them. HOWEVER, should you go gluten-free, know that many of them are not... -
ARCHIVED Here's A Possible Connection Between Celiac And
Merika replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Jnkmnky, The study you posted was for *severely* malnourished mothers. Most of us with long-undiagnosed celiac are malnourished, but not nearly to the extent of women in famine conditions. I think in a situation where otherwise healthy adults are dying of famine, having a 2-fold increase in schizophrenia among babies is pretty remarkable in that it was... -
My ds is one of the "few" who reacts to soy of ANY quantity - oils, lecithin, vitamins, you name it. I have heard - can anyone confirm this? - that the soy protein molecule looks ALOT like the gluten molecule, so it is possible the body might mistake one for the other, especially if you have leaky gut (which it seems any of us with additional food allergies...

ARCHIVED Disappointing Visit With Ped. Gi
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Shannon, The symtoms you describe (eye circles, hair loss, irritibility/mood swings, and unusual bm's) are classic food allergy symptoms. This could include celiac and other diseases as well of course. Drs are notoriously ignorant of allergies, and seem content to stay that way (grrrrr). You may want to google "eight common allergens" to learn the biggest... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Just Diagnosed - What Next?
Merika replied to CeliacMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son went on the gluten-free diet when he was 2 yrs old, a month or two after I was diagnosed and went gluten-free. My mom is also gluten-free and celiac. Kids adapt very fast, and pickup exactly what you are saying and thinking ;-) I've always been matter-of-fact about it. If you can find a symptom she has and doesn't like and mentally tie it to... -
ARCHIVED Disappointing Visit With Ped. Gi
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Shannon, oooooh, doctors make me so mad You've definitely done all you can with this one. Take the test results when they come (whatever they are) and then RUN as far and fast away from this doc as you can. You sound very concerned for your daughter's health, and "mama gut" is almost always right, IMO. Since you've run the blood test,... -
Berneses, An all-natural peanut butter will be soy-free. That means they just grind up the peanuts and put it in a jar, which is really how it should be Depending on where you are in the US: Laura Scudder natural peanut butter is soy free. And their new "organic" line is mixed with peanut oil and roasted (though not as good, IMO as the regular...

ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
Merika replied to max's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Max, and welcome You do not need a biopsy. The blood test clearly indicates celiac. Whether or not the biopsy shows damage (and I'd bet it will) is irrelevant. You should be on a gluten free diet for life. You say you are from SE Asia...does this mean you're asian? I ask because there was a thread here recently about an (I think?) Asian-American...
